New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

NATIVE AMERICAN VILLAGE

At the Native American Village, found within the Folklife Village, Festival-goers are invited to visit the Native Nations tent, where Louisiana tribal elders and their apprentices demonstrate traditional indigenous crafts. Representatives from the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, Chitimacha, United Houma Nation, Louisiana Band of Choctaw, and the Jena Band of Choctaw demonstrate the art of basket weaving, flint knapping, wood carving, and pottery.

Exhibition pow wow performances will be featured at the Village, including fancy shawl, straight dance, grass dance, jingle, men’s traditional, hoop and stomp dance.  Visitors will have a unique opportunity to learn about the origins of these diverse dances and marvel at the colorful regalia and intricate movements that characterize the Southeastern pow wow.  This year’s drum groups will be Native Nations Intertribal and Thunder Hill.

In addition, the United Houma Nation will be serving fry bread, maque choux, and Indian tacos at their food booth adjacent to the Native Nations tent.
