Default I'm baaaaaack - Music History for August 13th

Four days after Jerry Garcia's death on August 9, 1995, the largest of many memorials draws 20,000 fans to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.




In 1990, rhythm and blues singer Curtis Mayfield is paralyzed from the waist down after being struck by a lighting rig before an outdoor concert in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mayfield died in 1999.

His last gig with them was the following night at the Cavern in Liverpool. Lionel Richie and Diana Ross teamed up to bring us “Endless Love,” the song that began a 9 week hold on the number 1 position this week in 1981.



Paul Simon gave a concert in Central Park, New York in 1991. Three quarters of a million people showed up for the free performance.



Born on this day in 1896, Leon Theremin, Russian inventor. Most famous for his invention of the theremin, one of the first electronic musical instruments. He first performed the theremin with the New York Philharmonic in 1928. He died on 3rd November 1993.



Oscar Peterson celebrates his 82nd birthday today.
