Wink How to pronounce stuff in New Orleans

I think we need a thread on proper pronunciation, to help the newbies (and some of us veterans, as well).

Calliope --- Kal-ee-ope (not like the musical instrument)
Burgundy -- Berr-gun-dee (accent in the middle)
Tchoupitoulis --- Chop - i - too - lus (I think)

I stayed in a place on Pauger Street last year -- never did find out how to pronounce.

Others???

if you keep your tongue on the bottom of your mouth, pronounce everything with 1 syllable as 2, and 2 syllables as 1, you sound semi-local.
be-rr = beer
n'awlins = new orleans

others?

I've heard Chartres as Charters, but also as Cha-dahs, which I found very sexy.
