We're keeping it simple this year; we're going to a friend's house who lives up on a hill. From his house, you can see fireworks from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
What is everyone else up to?

One of the best questions I've ever received from an American was: "Do y'all have July 4th up there in Canada?"
Uh yeah, it's usually right after July 3rd... :>)

I was in UK last year for July 4th- and it was a little weird. They lost, after all. I think there are still some hard feelings. Much better to celebrate it on this side of the pond.
Todd Rundgren and War at the Rib Fest in Naperville.
Warning, Johhny- it isn't the real "WAR". Just one greedy former member who won the rights to the name...
Avoid them at all cost, imo

You're invited:)
We'll have open house and will be grillen & chillen Fri - Sunday. I set out some crab traps and if we're lucky we'll have a boil. I hear there's a statewide ban on fireworks, but we've had rain for the past 3 days so hopefully we can light off a few.

Most likely i'll just chill at home and that's exactly what I need as this summer I already have wakarusa, new orleans trip and Kenny Brown's picnic behind me, with this fun planned for the last half of july: trip to visit the canajuns, trip to the most beautimous Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas, and trip to nola for snatchmo and grisgris's birthday. Happy Independence Day, yall!

We'll visit my mom on the 2nd or 3rd so that we can avoid being on the roads on the 4th. People get pretty crazy around here--lots of drunk drivers. There'll be fireworks all around us because most of the tourists hit Alabama on their drive in. Rosemary Beach's fireworks display is really good. But, we'll probably go kayaking on one of the dune lakes that weekend so it won't be totally boring.

I will be at the country's oldest continuous Fourth of July parade in the country in Bristol RI, beginning in 1785. This is as close as RI gets to Mardi Gras, it is a great celebration, which started with free concerts on the lawn last week, a drum and bugle corps competetion and fireworks the night before and a wonderful parade. It is so patriotic here on the Fourth that it brings a tear to my eye driving through town every year,,,,Celebrate our Independence and don't forget the folks we have lost fighting for our freedom...Happy 4th everyone!!

Yeah, it would be nice to have a long weekend. But we can't really celebrate July 1st on June 29th -- wouldn't make sense. Canada Day is a bit like Xmas -- just can't move it around (maybe it should be more like Easter ;)).

Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of my first crazy suppllemental(Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds). I expect I'll spend a somewhat more traditional 4th this year watching baseball, working on the Christmas CD, and grilling turkey burgers.
I have a somewhat more detailed schedule now.
Tonight: Going to Braves/Phillies game
Friday: Get fucked up(it's something of a tradition)
Saturday: Grill out, drink beer, and watch fireworks at the Druid Hills Country Club from 2nd tee at the Candler Park golf course
Sunday: Recover from the 4th. This usually means spending more time on the couch than usual.

IF it's nice, we'll drive to B'klyn and head for the beach, if not making shluffy. Then I believe we'll stick close to home and drive into Queens to hang with brother Cisco and sister Pat, eat some burgers and dogs and then back to the city for the Macy's fireworks display.
Which BTW is on the Hudson River this yr, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry finding it. Nice, but we live right off the East River where they usually do it every yr, we stand on our roof and watch w/Abita's. Not this yr.

What?! No kidding: Best wishes for a full recovery to yall both. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. ((((((Buff and mamaroux and Denise))))))
Here on Florida's Left Coast we're getting LOTS of much-needed rain. The thunderstorms are 'training' in off the Gulf. Very warm and wet all around, there's even some local flooding. Changeable too: One minute it's hot and sunny, steamy even; the next it's pouring buckets. Quite tropical - which I guess is no surprise for the 28th parallel...
Our plans are to stay close to home - we'll go to a house party at our good friends and neighbors down the street. Typical celebration of food and beverages, although not in that order. :D If the weather allows, we'll trip on down to St. Pete's waterfront for the fireworks. Either way, I predict a table tennis throwdown, a la Wimbledon.
OK, I totally made that last part up. There WILL be ping-pong matchups, but ain't nothing as genteel as the All England Club.
It's pretty typical for us to hang close to home during the summer. I don't know what it is about that: Seems the whole country up and hits the road at this time of year (I know, it's cause the kids are out of school...) but we're more likely to lay low. Even back in the day - I rarely went out on Summer Tour. Best seat I ever got from GD Ticketing, though, was summer of 1992: Second row, dead center in Charlotte. Ah, the memories.
All right yall, I'm outta here to go make some groceries. Gotta git while it's not raining... Best of luck, all, especially those who need it (see above). Be safe, and have some fun!
Peace.

I hope everyone had a spectacular 4th
We had a grand time here at altitude. I broke out the new "Threadhead Gumbo 09" recipe book and picked out a few morsels to add to my other goodies planned for the cookout:
Zydekitten and NOLA's mardi gras jello shots, IB's prosciutto wrapped shrimp and artichoke and green bean casserole, and Corona's mushroom Neptune.
Everything, and I mean EVERTHING (especially the jello shots), were a complete hit and enjoyed immensely by all. Kudos again to the zipcodes and everyone else who made the book possible!!

oooh, peach cobbler! Must be my southern blood, I gotta make it every summer. It'll be another 3 weeks at least before we see fresh peaches round here.

We just started getting good ones too, but it's way to early for local ones here, so I have no idea where they're coming from.

yeah, no telling these days. one of my favorite covers of all time. I have been searching for a way to rip the Moogis shows- found out that Adobe threatened lawsuits for any software companies producing a program that circumvented the security features of Flash 10. so the only option is to do a screen capture, which is not quite as clear a reproduction, but it works. requires lotsa drive space too, as a 3hr show is over 12 gigs of capture...
so anyone with a Moogis subscription to the Beacon shows, you have until Nov 1 to grab if desired. Replay Video Capture is the software I found, $40, or less if you can find an online coupon. Use the highest settings (8000 bitrate, 30 ft/sec). Also recommend grabbing 1/2 at a time, otherwise your burning software will have trouble opening such a huge file. I found this true even w/ a dual core chip.
