View Full Version : Superfly shows? Too much Bonnaroo attention.

It seems that ever since Superfly has been putting on Bonnaroo they have been announcing their Jazz Fest night shows later and later. I don't think they remember that these are the shows that put them on the music scene map. They are a New Orleans, Lousiana based operation not Manchester, Tennessee.
Patience, Grasshopper.
Does it really matter whether they announce 'em in January or in March? As long as they have them in April & May.

Yes Swag, it matters. I have a group of 16 or so every year that likes to go to all of the night shows together. With that many people, it's a challenge to get tickets for some of the more sought after shows every year. We like a few shows that have already been announced, but if I buy 16 tickets for each of these shows to make sure I get them before they sell out and Superfly announces 12 great shows 2 months later, there in lies my dilemma. If they would just go back to announcing their shows when everyone else does, it would make the whole process as simple as it used to be. This is my 35th Jazz Fest and probably my 7th hosting a group this size. It's simple things like this that make the whole process that much easier.
Now do you see my point?

BTW Swag,
I've never thanked you personally for all of your hard work on your site. My Mom and Dad took me to my first Fest when I was a month old(1972). All of these years that my parents or I weren't able to remember all of the great acts and years they played have become a whole lot clearer due to your tireless cube rescue. Our memories sure do have more meaning since you arrived on the scene.
Thanks from all of us.
Well, sure, but not everyone else cooperates anyway. If SF announced their shows now, there will still be that other great show that doesn't pop up until late March. But, yeah, I feel your pain.
And you're welcome. Swagland is a labor of love.

so all 16+ agree to go to the same show? its more important to be together than to pursue your own musical interests?
coordinating the ameoba is way too much stress for me. if your group goes every year, they should be able to buy their own tickets by now. its only my 18th year - but i finally learned not to be the adult in charge.
luckily, our group enjoys the fact that they can go see a show with a few friends, while their spouse heads off to a different gig with other friends, while others decide to do nothing at all. and some of us will even do a venue solo if the mood strikes us.
ps - yes, i am a bitch, but a benevolent bitch. give them a fest - and they fest for a day. teach them to fest - and they'll dance their asses off.

I think it's pretty obvious that Jazzfest is no longer Superfly's biggest priortiy. Bonneroo has become their bread and butter. I'm okay with that. My biggest beef with Superfly waiting so long is that they usually force you to pay a crazy amount of shipping per order. A couple of years ago, they announced the Superjam w/ Trey so late that the only option available was to pay $20 extra for shipping. They also didn't offer will-call.

Barb,
My group has basically the same taste in music and share favorite acts. We also only get to see each other 4 days out of every year and want to spend as much time together as possible. Does that explain things a little better?

There's no need to explain why you want to hang out and see the same music as your friends EVER.

Thanks McGregor,
My last sentence in that post was sprinkled with the slightest bit of sarcasm as her reference to this "only" being her 18th year was intended. I'm not even sure why she responded the way she did or why it matters to her.

bigeasy, i think barb responded the way she did because she led her large group for so many years and finally decided it wasn't necessary for her group to have a leader. Your situation is different. My philosophy while in new orleans, actually my philosophy every day, is do whatcha wanna.

Our whole group goes every which way, but it is very nice when we all end up going to the same show. The beers keep flowing and spilling....

Funk,
I agree that was her point, but starting with "it's more important to be together than pursue your own musical interests?" is what got me. She was definitely implying that some people in our group sacrifice their musical interest just to hang out. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I've fested several different ways - solo, with my husband, with a small group of friends. Every one was great, just different.
Solo is my usual status. I really love letting a whim take me wherever I want to go. It is the only time in my life when I am truly on my own, and it makes me feel really free. Good for the spirit!
When I go with my husband, we don't do as many night acts, but spend more time touring around the greter NOLA area, which is also quite wonderful.
And the one time I got a group of friends together, there were 8 of us, so it was a pretty manageable sized group. We agreed on a stage to setup camp at each day, then we all scattered to the winds, meeting back at camp various times during the day. We actually wound up going to a lot of the same night shows, mainly because we all have similar taste in music.
Bottom line is - it's all good!

I used to go with 10-12 friends and it was a blast, but now its just my wife and I and I LOVE the flexibility!
Sometimes it would be nice to have a bigger crew, but its generally not worth the hassle for me. I'd rather go where we want, hear what we want to hear, and meet new people all the time.
That being said - i have become a planner and would love more dates to be announced (cough, superfly, cough)

maybe that's why i avoid the huge group thing - too much beer spillage. unless you meant spilling down your throat - i like that spillage.
any number that won't fit in one vehicle is more than i care to deal with (and you can fit 7 in a 5 passenger car if needed). the rest can meet us there, or not. even though we have about 90% same taste in music, sometimes FOMS gets us split in different directions. or bad knees, backs, paychecks have us staying in for the evening.
this will be the 1st year in a very long time that the majority of us are staying a the same motel - different standards & budgets and times of bookings often spread us all over.

Sunsuites Metairie. its sold out for 2nd weekend, but rooms still avaialable 1st weekend. book 7 days or more and its 1/2 price per night. we booked months ago and got 1990's rates. i'd tell ya, but you'd cry.
its got a bed, a shower & a full size fridge with freezer for water bottles. all i really need for fest. but i will miss the Residence Inn - its so nice.
i love the location. convenient to everything when you have a car. and you dont have to fight the fest crowds to get into the restaurants - plenty of good places to eat. the grocery stores were all up & running by fest last year.

i havent stayed there - but friends have. its basic. good location, good price. but one man's palace is another man's rat hole. my friends have low standards - that's why they chose me as a friend.
this bored it like a masked ball - i'm not really sure who is behind some of these thread names.

I asked a friend who lives in NOLA about the area and he said it was obviously not great but far far from being bad so I took that as a good sign.
Easy access to other parts of town as well. How much time do you spend in the room anyway awake? hopefully, not much.

i do tissues. then people think of me in the portapotty. then when they get home & go they think of me - like pavlov's dogs (the study not the band from st. louis). so i'll never be forgotten.

to be honest, i have kinda been pissed off with superfly for a few years now. it seems they are announcing later and later every year, their tickets ALWAYS seem to be on the expensive side, and they never seem to flip it up in interesting ways anymore...its like, "wow another galactic show at the state theatre - who woulda thunk it!?!"...
i dunno, i think its just an amalgamation of my general feelings toward them as a promotions company for a few years now...they do the same thing with both bonarroo and vegoose, going so far as to sell tickets to shows where the acts have yet to be announced...that, coupled with the fact that they have sort have gotten away from their roots lately, moving away from the jamband side of things in order to money grub with the whole emo/pop scene...
so unless superfly up-jumps-the-boogie and announces something mind blowing i doubt i will attend one of their shows this year...

Hey Barb,
Do Pavlov's Dog ever play together anymore?I would so do a road trip from Chicago to St. Louis for that.I wore out my copies of both their albums.
