Whoaaaaaaa, what a ride!
I made it back with one of the first reports from Mardi Gras 2007. Whew!
The first night I went out to Copeland's and had Crawfish Bread (tuscan bread with a layer of spinach & artichoke, then crawfish, then melted cheese on top of that) and for my entree I had the Eggplant Pirogue (Fried eggplant slices, au gratin sauce with shrimp and crab claws over that, and it was all served over angel hair pasta) oh yea, and a biscuit. Yummy!
Then next day started off with nothing but Threadhead love from everywhere. Thanks to Corona, I got to hook up with Amyloves for Endymion. Let me just say right here that Amyloves is THE BEST. She took such good care of me and my chicklet and my niece. I couldn't have asked for better treatment from anybody. She went above and beyond and thanks to her, all three of us had a LARGE TIME. Chicklet was a little overwhelmed at first (we had a little trouble finding Amy), but by the time she got calmed down and settled in, she absolutely LOVED it. And she really took to Amy right away. Oh and she loved Amy's daughter, too. Kept giving her hugs, lol. Amy's daughter is a DOLL BABY. I had soooo much fun. We all did. So already I accomplished my major goal of introducing chicklet to Mardi Gras. She is now indoctrinated and she gets it! We caught all kinds of good stuff. I got a beautiful porcelain mask and a cool yellow feather boa (lost it later at Ray's). One of Amyloves friends was nice enough to let chicklet sit in one of those wooden chairs at the top of a ladder and she thought she was a Mardi Gras princess. :D
I missed Taylor Hicks and Journey at the beginning but only because my awesome hostess was hooking me up with yummy daquiris so it was a good trade-off. The parade didn't get over till about 9:00 that night.
After I drove back to Slidell (really Pearl River) to drop the kiddies off, I got dressed and drove back to the Quarter to meet Lis and the gang at Ray's. I was so happy to see my Threadheads there (Corona, Kinderkitti, Eatmo and his girlfriend Heidi and Shamar). Again, another LARGE time was had by all. I got to enjoy new music, too. The music was great; we saw the Magnolias, Chief Bo Dollis, Rockin Dopsie and Trombone Shorty. When TS first came on I thought, Oh another kid with a trombone. Well let me tell ya, this kid totally blew me away! He was AWESOME! I mean the talent, the style, the class and sharpness this kid had was incredible. He definitely could blow. And he's only 20 yrs. old! I was dancing my butt off. Lis told me he has toured with Lenny Kravitz and Aerosmith. He was amazing. And Corona, KK and I just laughed all night long. I didn't get drunk; just had one beer but that's all I needed. ;) It was so good to see Lis again, too. The only downside was I didn't get to see Amy, my wine goddess and I really miss her. I got Jeff as a consolation prize though cuz he showed up later. I got some pix but Jeff will have better ones for yall I'm sure cuz he had his pimp daddy camera with him. And I got to park for free that night! Ended up going home around 3:30 that morning cuz I had big plans to take the girls to Bacchus the next day.
Welllll, I guess all the activity and overexcitement was too much for Pokermama cuz when I woke up the next day, I had one of those monster migraines and nausea all the next day. So we didn't make it to Bacchus but I got to have my own Mardi Gras with Mr. Toilet. He said throw me something and I said, I'll throw ya something, Mister. I tossed him some cookies.
The girls were very understanding and said, there's always next year and they were really sweet about it. At least we had a great time Saturday and I accomplished my main goal of introducing Chicklet to MG and she will have good memories. Oh, and the upside of me getting sick Sunday was I lost about five pounds, lol.
Okay, I will have a few pix for yall in the following posts.

Woo Hoo!!! Glad you and Chicklet had some big time fun!!!
Yeah, no doubt Shorty is a serious talent. Cool to see him on Trombone, too. Despite the nickname, he plays more trumpet these days.
The opening scene of Make it Funky is him, Kermit and Irvin Mayfield taking turns, and those two old hands have got nothing on the kid.

And here's Chief Bo Dollis (85 yrs. old)
Great pics, pchickie! Sorry you didn't hook up with us at Bacchus!
I have to disagree with you about one thing. Chief Bo Dollis is 63. I only mention this because my (so called) "friends" the other night said that Bo & I looked like we were the same age........
[Theodore Emile "Bo" Dollis was born in New Orleans in 1944.]
If I thought that they meant I looked like I was 85 y/o, they would have to be killed, no matter how good Bo looks, or how much I love my (so called) :friends"! ;)

Hey Jenn! Yea, I'm sorry I didn't get to see yall, either. I was so hoping that yall could meet Chicklet and I wanted to see you and Amy, too.
Well, Saturday night was a little fuzzy but I swear I heard somebody say he was 85 yrs. old. So my apologies go out to you and Mr. Bo Dollis for adding about 22 yrs. to your present age! As a matter of fact, I think you look at least 20 years younger than 63.

Aw Porkchop, I'm all blushing. That's such a sweet message. Glad I helped yall have a good time. Chicklet was breaking my heart cause she was just freaked out and I knew she'd have a good time once we got her all set up. You only picked the most crowded parade ever to introduce her to Mardi Gras! Gawd! Your neice was a cutie and definitely ready to have some fun.
Yall, the phone conversations of us trying to find each other were hilarious. Pokie was on the wrong side of St Charles so once I figured that out I told her she was a pain in my ass and I was headed to the neutral ground side. Then we figured out she was on the other side of the other lane of the street so I told her she was a pain in my ass again. Then I stood over there behind the crowd waving my cup in the air and saying, "Okay I'm standing here waving my cup in the air and this nice man is laughing at me. I hope you're happy." The man by me was cracking up. Luckily your niece saw me so I could stop. The crowd was just enormous and had grown a lot in that last hour or so. I would have panicked too if I was that little chicklet. But it all worked out. Jimmy (who rarely drinks much, but did on Saturday) hollered your name so many times that my friends were calling HIM Porkchop on Sunday. I teased him the next day about yelling Porkchop so much and waving and he makes a pouty face and goes, "Well.....I like porkchop. Leave me alone." Methinks he had a lil headache. It was funny!

Now THAT was some big fun. Arrived late Friday night and was greeted by the krewe plus shrimp pasta, jennbalaya, and praline bread pudding. Saw parades and caught stuff on Sunday and Tuesday. Lundi Gras festival on Monday. Saw music every night except Friday.
Sat: Wild Maggies at the Presbytere in Jackson Square. Bo Dollis sang 3 songs. He's such a beautiful man, always smiling. That night-Ray's. Great show after they finished the fashion show! Seven scenes in the fashion show, with bands trying to play inbetween. That really screwed with the first couple sets, one of which was the Underdawgs. Bo sang one song at the night show. But be forewarned: the heat doesn't work in Rays, the floor gives under your feet in some places and the place smells like shit. some serious sewer gas or drainage problems of some kind. But upfront and on the balcony, not so bad. Maybe we got used to it because we had a kickass time. The good news is they pour great shots. Jpotter got a shot of jaeger and it was at least a shot and a half.
Monday: Frenchmen Street. Spent most of our time at the wwoz show at cafe brasil. Cyril Neville had already played when we arrived at 7:30. Onstage was this cute girl in purple shirt, glittery gold pants and a purple wig playing a violin. YYR. Theresa Anderssen. Next a band that started with a G, something like Gradaugh-very funky. Big Sam arrived and from this point forward, he sat in for a song with every band. Next up was Groovesect. Nice set. Then Monk Boudreaux. After seeing Bo Dollis, I couldn't get my mind around Monk's set. He had on a beaded jacket and boots and a feather in his hat but he didn't sing even one injun song. Kind of soul or rock kind of stuff. It was MG. I was expecting injuns! Home early-12:30 so we could get up at 4:45 the next am.
I know my daze are out of order but I had to save the best for last. Sunday: We(Jpotter, corona and me) decided to rest up and go out for the 2am Underdawgs showat le bon temps roule. In November, I fell in love with this band. Their music is closest to my heart-funky new orleans style. But OMfreakinG! That show was just not to be believed. Shamarr is such a showman and holds everything together. EVery musician is amazing in his own right-don't remember the bass player's name but what a funky dude, Mike somebody on keys and percussion-white guy-who just funked it out the roof, Elliott Cohn on blazing guitar, Willie Green on drums-can't say enough about this amazing drummer, and Herb from Rebirth sat in on trumpet, congas and other percussion. Shamarr not only played trumpet and sang. He also played trombone and keys. They do their music in a sort of jamband style, with each musician getting a solo for most songs. Yall must catch these guys if you have the opportunity. I got home at 5. jpotter and corona stayed til the end and arrived at the hacienda at 7.
So very glad I got to experience Carnival. Thanks to all who helped to enhance my experience.

Got to NOLA about 4pm Sat. Unloaded truck and set up grill in neutral grounds for Endymion. Went to Howlin' Wolf for Papa Grows Funk. How in the world a place exists where music like that is obtained for no cover is beyond my comprehension. My brother, his wife, their daughter, another niece and I had a freaking blast. Sunday went to Harahan for family lunch with aunt and uncle on River Road. Got back to hotel in time to set up grill once again on St. Charles for Bacchus. My nephew caught beads from Drew Brees, himself. This 4 y/o blonde boy (my nephew) on a ladder caught like 6 footballs, a Chicken Little, a Nemo and so many good throws, it makes me think about renting a kid for next year. Too hung over from last night, so had to get sleep. Lundi Gras starts off with a Jazz brunch at Commander's. Had the 1-1-1 (gumbo, turtle soup and redfish bisque), pecan crusted gulf fish (sheepshead) with fresh lump crabmeat, bananas foster and quite a few cocktails. Dude just had to keep coming over with "can I refresh that drink for you, sir?" How in the hell am I supposed to say no to that? Back to hotel, change and off to Bourbon. Large voodoo from Lafite's lasted quite a while. Caught a portion of Orpheus on Canal. Then walked over to Howlin' Wolf for Bonerama. OMG, these fellas kicked arse. Late night burger at Igor's. Sleep for 4 hours. 7:30 am wake up call. Can't get a single member (out of 12 to choose from) of family to help bring grill, table, coolers down to St. Charles, so I do it myself. After they hear Pete Fountain's Half fast group, family starts to trickle down. Peach Schnapps for breakfast helps ease the hangover pain. After 15-20 Zulu parades, I finally get my first coconut. Covered in silver with a straw hat. Yell for Linda and Ms. Lena but get no responses. Watch most of Rex from the 2nd floor balcony of the GDH. Down to the grill for the trucks and my delicious andouille sausage. Considered going back to Bourbon but have just gotten too damn old and was asleep by 7pm. Still getting rehydrated. Sisters will send pics soon, I hope. No phone call from PC and I didn't read your email about Ray's until yesterday. Maybe I'll meet a TH another time.

Jeez, wish I'd known earlier as we ended up across the from the lsu group with the microphone. Their music was good but the guy never shut up during the parades. He was able to get a few of the marching bands to start playing during Rex. I thought it low class for him to put the lsu fight song on when the UF ROTC stopped to perform and then started a "go to hell, USC" when a high school band dressed in Trojan garb passed. He didn't realize they were high schoolers and had nothing to do with SoCal. I wore my Tulane sweatshirt for Bacchus. It woulda been cool to hang with some Greenies.
We were right next to the Doll museum (or something like that-big house with a gate and awning all way past the sidewalk to St. Charles) right across from the Garden District Hotel.

I was telling my friend today that MG is different then fest as there is no real line between day and night....so many festivities run day and night so you just have to jump in and jump out wherever you can. We grabbed sleep at weird times of the day/night so we could make it what we wanted to see and do. It was really a cool experience :)

Until 2 years ago I SWORE that MG was not for me and I would never ever go. I tried it last year to support the city after the Thing and was hooked (didn't do parades which I regretted huge when I got home). This year was off the charts because we did so much traditional MG events. If you guys can, I suggest you give it a try. It's truly an amazing cultural experience. BTW, we never even saw Bourbon or most of the quarter that whole week...not necessary to have a blast, catch great music, eat good food and party yo azz off :)

Okay - well now that you've got the MG 'feva' - what about ridin' in a parade next year?
who is game?
I'll tell you - it is the BEST experience you'll have....it is out of the box.

Corona, I can't believe you got up at 4:30 am. I told Jenn to make you a nice strong coffee with some Crown Royal and like a true blue Canadian gal you is, you'd rise to the occasion. And you did!
One day I shall Mardi Gras. It's such an important part of the New Orleans experience, that I will have to do it one year...hopefully sooner rather than later. The parades look like an absolute hoot!
I am pretty sure I would not experience FOWO, I would instead be DCTWO (dead certain to wimp out).:o

Oh man, I cannot afford to ride with a krewe. That's some serious BIG bucks. If I had my choice it would be Zulu hands down. That parade was a BLAST! A couple thousand bucks to ride though- for dues and throws. Too much for me :(
The Jamn's rode in Zulu before the Thing and loved it. Tell them about it Ibjamn!

I've ridden in Zulu 3 times and it is lots of fun, not sure it's something I would do every year as it takes up ALL your time on Mon & Tues with zero sleep, but an amazing ride, for sure.
The dues for Zulu this year were $550 which included your ride, costume & insurance. Throws are extra and I have spent between $1000 - $2000 each time, and that's just enough stuff.
As Ms. Lena will confirm, any TH is welcome to ride with the Zulu Diamond cutters krewe. Hebjamn & I rode with them in 2005 and they are the party krewe!!
I also rode with the Big Shot (Jimmie Felder) in 1995 and with the Witchdoctor in 1998 (Otis Davenport).

Finally uploaded and labelled my pics. I didn't get all the T-heads but quite a few. There's not too many pics and I scooped a couple from Amy and Jeff. I think it captures the week pretty well. Here's the link:

Full-heartedly 2nd that emotion. I was able to ride in Orpheus' inaugural parade about 14 years ago. Being on the "other side" was incredible not to mention James Brown was the headliner of the ball at the Convention Center.
