My sister knew Danny and his wife Blue Lu quite well. We were visiting N.O. when he died. My sister, my wife and I went to pay our respects during his “laying in state” at Gallier Hall before his jazz funeral the day after. Quite an experience.
I wonder how many TH’s know this little known fact about Danny Barker.
In 1972, he was approached by the pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church, who asked him to lead a church-sponsored brass band for young people; the group that resulted, the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band, became a popular New Orleans band in its own right before eventually morphing into the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
In the 1994 New Orleans Mardi Gras season, he reigned as King of Krewe du Vieux. He died March 13 that year.

A number of years ago I saw Percy Humphrey was performing in the economy hall. I told my wife we've got to see him while he's still around. I think he was 90 maybe? Anyway he was leading the band in his chair, giving the musicians their cues and such. At the end of the show he wanted to say something so everybody quieted down. He said he knew he could go now as his band would be allright without him. That was his last performance as the next month he passed away. Needless to say I was glad I was there.

I miss all those regulars and the folks that I saw once like Jay McShann, Shirley Horn, Hadda Brooks, etc. Don't forget the interviews by Alison Miner.
Wow. Yeah, Al Hirt for sure. Catch a bit of Pete Fountain while you still can.
Exactly what I did for Gatemouth, my Jazzfest hero. RIP!

I used to close Fest by going by every stage for a little taste before I wound up at the Nevilles or the Rads. I spent the longest time at Economy Hall enjoying Percy Humphrey and His Crescent City Joymakers. Those were good days.

I'm with you, Ohio. I am so very glad I got to see his final fest performance. It was amazing how good he was considering how sick he was. That was a pretty magical day all around.
Of course at Fest, they are all pretty magical.
