View Full Version : Suggestions for 2010 Jazz Fest (Non BNA)

Ok, I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to suggest acts that they would like to see at jazz fest in 2010. These should be acts that come from your area that you feel the rest of the music loving world should get to know a little better, and what better place than jazz fest. If you can, post a link to something from youtube so that we can take a look (I'll have to post my vids later, when I'm not at work). These should be acts that you think would fit into the vibe of the fest.
My suggestions (all from Texas)
Carolyn Wonderland (Imagine Janis Joplin playing guitar with a Hendrix/SRV feel)
The Gourds (Bluegrass with a twist)
Gary Clark Jr. (Up and coming blues player from Austin)

I'll put my 2 cents (Canadian) for Great Big Sea. They have a loose connection to New Orleans with their Cajun/Maritime roots, and they're a hell of a lot of fun live!

Does Jazz Fest really book acts of this level?
I could very well be wrong, but I've always had the sense that they book a lot of Louisiana acts and then supplement that with BNAs who headline at Acura, Gentilly, and Congo Square. I guess there are the occasional out-of-town acts at the Fais Do-Do and Economy Hall, as well, but that's more of a niche thing.

Although, to completely contradict myself, I remember Mofro playing Acura on the First Friday three years ago, so is that the kind of act that we're talking about?
I guess Mofro doesn't really qualify as a BNA, but they were big enough to play Acura early in the day.

I think Ry Cooder played with Ala Tourke Faure (sp) in mid 90's and did a set with Lindley also . Very cool mixture of African and California hypnotic repeating passages. I couldn't tell if I was falling asleep or into an amzing altered conciousness. It's so hard to tell sometimes.

I believe that was in 1995. Robert Cray also played that day and there was a heavy downpour during Cray's set which cleared some room at the Longhair stage for Cooder and Lindley who followed Cray.

That was the '94 Fest. When Bobby King and Terry Evans came out to sing, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

And I'll add Honeyboy to the list just because everybody needs to see him at least once in their life.

New Mastersounds haven't had a fairgrounds set yet, have they?
Funny you mentioned them.
As someone who’s been into them since they first set foot on American soil, I would LOVE for this to happen. They are my favorite live act on the scene, and I’ve often hoped that they’d get a shot on the Fairgrounds.
However, after thinking about that, I looked at the Jazz Fest lineup and that’s when I realized that acts of their size that aren’t from Louisiana don’t really get invited to perform at Jazz Fest. I would think they’d have to be a much bigger draw first, but believe me, I hope and pray that I am wrong!

I'd love to see The Nighthawks, and Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers, and then a reunion of Jimmy with the Nighthawks. They are actually at the same festival this weekend in Hagerstown, but I'm sure there will be no reunion. http://www.blues-fest.org/index.html I would have said Chuck Brown last year.

That's him, but I think he's from AL. Gulf Shores maybe? He played around here all the time, and was one of the performers at a zoo do one year as the opener for Asleep at the Wheel and Ricky Scaggs. Nobody bothered to show up in time to hear Mac play, so there were people wandering in during his entire performance and talking and carrying on. AATW was up next and mesmerized the audience. By the time Ricky Skaggs took the stage, there weren't but a handful of us left. It was so painfully obvious we felt bad for Mac and Ricky Skaggs. As far as I know, neither of them have played here again although we've seen AATW here several times since.

GREAT suggestion.... and he has a New Orleans legacy of sorts, even if for his failed French Quarter club.
(seriously, he had Dr. John in his '70s "All Star" band, draws heavily on Louisiana music in his recent albums, and he's LEVON HELM! Which is plenty enough reason.)

Hey! You stole my ideas! I especially second Karl D either with the Tiny Universe, or with Greyboy Allstars. I know they have played the fest before, but for a band that holds down night show after night show every year, I think they deserve another fairgrounds slot. Goddamn they rock. Same goes for Lettuce or Soulive. Night show vets who deserve a day slot IMHO.
I will also toss The Dynamites feat. Charles Walker into this list. While I haven't caught them live yet, the tapes I have heard are goddamn tasty!

u r both rite....born in 'bama raised in Mississippi. Mac is an immensely talented guy. Great songwriter and musician. Mac is still playing with Jimmy and there lies the problem. If Jimmy is not at fest during fest then he is on the road and Mac is with him. If he is there, then Mac is playing with him. Although he could do a set @ the lagniappe stage the day b4 Jimmy plays....just throwing it there ;)

I'm not sure about Greg, but Mac does still play with Jimmy. Both Alabama and Mississippi claim Mac. play an early slot in the Blues Tent. He plays a great set, and is a really humble guy. And I think he is just the kind of player who should be at JF.

Did he go to S.U. or LeMoyne?
I was at Syracuse U and Syracuse Ballet Theater.
Dave here. S.U.... I graduated from the illustious Newhouse School, which sadly qualified me for a career in restaurant management. :) Unfortunately, Disco was king during my S.U. tenure  , so I don't remember the Slide Inn. I do remember the Flashcubes, though. I believe I saw Willie at a free show in Walnut Park; they used to have shows there during the one week of spring that occurred before school ended. Also saw the Records there. Feel free to e-mail me off of our J & M page (link is below), if you would like to "fill in some more blanks."

Janiva would be cool but it seems the 'fest doesn't bring in many blues artists from outside Louisiana unless they are a big name. I've never seen Kid Ramos, Rod Piazza, James Harmon or others like them at the 'fest. For that matter, the clubs never seem to bring blues in for Jazzfest. With the clubs, it seems more and more it has to be funk. I like my funk but there are other types of music I would like to hear when I'm out at night. Before anyone attacks this, I know there are clubs that offer other types of music but for the past few years more and more shows are leaning heavy on the funk often with what seems to be a rotating set of players.

Agreed. They and similar need to be at fest!

I have no idea if anyone from the OP is still standing, much less playing. I was just trying to think of another horn-driven funk band from the same era as ToP and was mostly influenced by your name when they came to mind.

Nope. I remember it well. I grew up as the 7th of 8 children (in a "yours, mine and ours" family), so I watched a lot of stuff I probably wouldn't have otherwise. And I distinctly remember struggling to stay awake to watch the Midnight Special because my older brothers and sisters were doing it and it seemed "cool."

Don't know whether he'd be considered a BNA or not, but I think that Raphael Saadiq would be a great act for Fest. Thanks to Malo for giving me his CD The Way I See It. I had never even heard of the guy (and didn't know of his Tony! Toni! Toné! background), but I really like his sound. Just saw a performance of his on SoulStage and think he'd appeal to a lot of folks at Fest. I would definitely check him out, and I'm sure there would be lots and lots of wimmen camped out for his set.

Felice Brothers! Felice Brothers! Felice Brothers!
saw them last night. Had seen them a year or two ago, which was great. And they've only gotten better, adding a fiddle player and managing to become both tighter AND looser a band simultaneously. For those unfamiliar, it's a band based around three actual brothers from the Catskills, and the thumbnail on them is that they're kind of like the Band, but wilder (and possibly drunker, which is quite an accomplishment). Their albums are terrific, but live they're as good as anyone I've seen in recent years. Exhilarating!

I'm seconding (or thirding/fourthing, etc.) these:
- Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
- The Gourds (LOVED them at Suwannee Springfest!)
- Carolyn Wonderland (totally dug her at High Sierra in 2007)
- Jake Shimabukuro (ditto, as well as at California WorldFest)
I'm suggesting:
- Hot Buttered Rum
- Infamous Stringdusters
- Yonder Mountain String Band
- Albino! (fabulous Heavy, Heavy Afrobeat band from NorCal)
- The Budos Band (another excellent Afrobeat band from NY)
- Swamp Cabbage
- Moonalice
Baconwrapped

And another NorCal Afrobeat group that kicks is Aphrodesia...
heck, they could do a roundup of U.S. Afrobeat groups:
Anitbalas
Toubab Krewe
Nomo
Extra Golden
they're all terrific.
or they could just bring over more bands from Africa, particularly from the Francophone countries... that way they can play Festival Internationale as well and get the most out of their journey.

After seeing Billy Bang again here, and for the fourth time hearing selections from "Vietnam The Aftermath", one of the best albums from the last decade (http://www.amazon.com/Vietnam-Aftermath-Billy-Bang/dp/B00005OW61/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_b) , and also one of the most moving, I really think it is time to invite him to play this suite in the Jazz Tent. Billy combines Asian folk tunes with flavors of all styles of Jazz from the 60s until now to create a reflective, personal portrait of War and all its ambiguities. While earlier in the decade, some questioned the relevance of a new opus on Vietnam...perhaps now when America is again involved in a nation building campaign where no clear exit strategy is self evident...this passionate masterpiece deserves to reach more listeners.
Especially for songs like Moments for the Kiamia**. This is a beautiful lament that I have had the past honor of seeing live in accompaniment to a Garth Fagan dance piece that it inspired. But just as moving was Friday's opening night 2009 Rochester Jazz Fest performance with a bass solo that alone would bring anyone to tears.

Ok....after last night's incredible show....Monty Alexander Trio (http://www.montyalexander.com/media.html) for the Jazz Tent is an absolute must. Incredible piano with artistry, dexterity and musicianship that takes your breath away. He can play most anything from Stevie Wonder to fellow Jamaican Bob Marley to any and every Jazz Standard (http://bwdsrv.com/montyalexander/media/sweetgeorgiabrown.html) interpreted in his own sweet groovy style. He will own the tent and they won't let him stop. Great sidemen too and if New Orleans's own, the incredible and sublime Herlin Riley plays drums with him as he did last night...you will remember those moments in the tent forever.

karl denson in any of his various incarnations. greyboy allstars, karl denson's tiny universe, karl denson trio. i know he has played the fairgrounds before, but its been some time. frankly the dude is straight up funky as hell. he plays the fest night shows every year and deserves another top billing IMHO.
and, while this thread is for "non BNA" i will once again lobby for PRINCE at the fest.

also would like to see lettuce (or soulive) get a fairgrounds gig. this is another band that has become a big part of my nightshow tradition over the last few years, and i dont think they have played the fairgrounds before.
and keeping with my 3 minute old tradition of giving a non-BNA recommendation followed by a BNA recommendation i would really like to see LIL' WAYNE come home to NOLA and rock the party. i know this is outside the purview of many of you guys, but despite living in MIA he reps NOLA and i would like to see what he would bring to the hometown crowd. I remember being in a cab on the way to the fest in '02 or so, and asking the young and hip cabbie why we see peeps like ludacris playing the fairground yet never see any of the notorious cash money crew play...this was way before young money was blowing up, and I was mainly asking in reference to the hot boyz/juvenile, but I still have the same question.
I imagine that money is the answer to my question.

Back in my H.S. days, we entered a tournament and decided to name our team "BYE this round".

The tourney organizers disallowed the name, though, so we never got to see if it would work.

Huey Piano Smith would be outrageous... Is he still alive? Doesn't play very often if he is...
But by far the best 2 were Earnest Ranglin & Monty Alexander, suggested separately. They've recorded & played together many times. They were there for ALL phases of Jamaican music for the last 50+ years, jazz, rocksteady, ska, reggae.I saw them in NYC a few years ago, easily one of the best musical experiences of my life. Ernest reminds me of Hendrix if he had lived into his 70s, with nothing more to prove, just groove. I was amazed at how they could be fire breathing funky yet totally relaxed... and they won't be around forever
GET THEM!!!!

There was a Huey Piano Smith story in Offbeat a couple of issues ago and he seemed pretty clear on the idea that he was not interested in being active in music any more. He wasn't so active even when he was having hits, for that matter, generally turning his performances over to others.

One rumored name can be scratched: Mark Knopfler has released his spring 2010 tourdates and he's on the East Coast during the fest.
