Believe me..for every act that Threadheads are mostly likely aware of and likely to see at NOHJF...like John Bouttee, Jon Cleary, Bonerama, Robert Randolph, Campbell Bros, Tower of Power, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Papa Grows Funk, Dwayne Dopsie...there will be many others from all over the globe and across the spectrum of Jazz and Blues that will be incredible...

A little something you might like on June 13th...this is the only separated ticketed event that I will be most make...the nine day mind blowing experience of the Club Pass allowing entry at eight other venues will pre-occupy my life for most of the time

Double WOW ...

This looks really great ... the whole thing, and you are a true ambassador for your city ... Im torn between this and the Duke Ellington Jazzfest in DC ... The main attraction being, its 40 minutes from me.

Is it just me or does the rochester lineup get better every year??

Awesome as usual, Michael! I so wish I could make this fest, it's at the very top of my life wish list. I hope you will get a chance to see Cincy's contribution in the form of The Faux Frenchmen. The best jazz talent left in this city (the others, such as Fred Hirsch, always leave for greener pastures).
This is gypsy jazz, paying homage to Django Reinhart & Stephane Grappelli. They really are our city's 'best musical foot forward', and I think you will enjoy them...

Now there's an interesting pairing...

I think Carolyn is the warmup for Jake who was a big hit last year...one secret to the this festival is that the nightly free Jam session often gives a second chance to catch the hottest acts....a few people who were turned away from Jake four performances last year in the clubs were surprised to find him playing after hours back at the jam.

On your recommendation, I will most absolutely check them out. I get three chances! Hot Club of Cowtown...another such group is back together and we won't miss them either...And then there is Stephane Wrembel, Paris born and Django inspired.

Gypsy Jazz will be well represented. If you decide not to wait another year...just let me know.

I really love gypsy jazz, and would really love to make this fest, but it just isn't in the cards this year- big changes at work with the new contract beginning this week; not the right time to leave town for sure. Thanks though!

There was a wild group from Russia that I saw here last year called "Billy's Band"...the Marx Brothers Play Tom Waits and Dixieland in Paris of the 1920s...or maybe Cabaret era - Berlin. If you ever get a chance...catch that group immediately. They stir something inside that comes out of the collective-unconscious immigrant memory. And they are real funny too.

Paul It's both.

Each Club-Pass venue has a "main" act every day (for nine days) that performs two one hour sets but each set is treated as a separate show in that the room is effectively cleared between the sets. Often, but not always, the artists will consider these shows as two different sets so the play list will vary many times without any duplication. With the Club pass this gives you two chances to catch most artists every day. If you don't use the Club-Pass then to get into any show, the cost is $20-$25 depending on the venue. That per show price only makes sense if you are at the festival only for a day or two and see less than five shows total...otherwise you get the pass. Now, some musicians play two days in succession, which means a total of four sets (Bonerama!) and others will appear both in the Club and a free stage in successive days (John Bouttee). Finally, one venue at least has three shows a day..the first being a warm up act.

Ok...At the club venues (eight of them within walking distance) everybody does at least two sets a day....every set is considered a separate show...every club pass gets you into every show you can make.

Better ?

Thanks, Marcia and I will think of all you as we begin our next Fest Trek later today...when we finally decide whether to kick this off with either The Jazz Mandolin Project, (which I have not seen) or Billy Bang or Bill Frisell (both of whom we've seen several times here) . Will catch the Faux Frenchmen per Ohio's rec..and the Nordic Series and the UK series..oh my that's probably already too much for one night.

ZDK...also thanks...have not had much time to design since JF. The Softshell Boys do have a few special projects planned for later in the summer

Oooh, you've hit on the two non-NOLA musical acts that really caught my eye/ear (after Jake and Dave Brubeck): Bill Frisell and the Jazz Mandolin Project!

I'm envious. I hope you and the lovely Ms. Marcia have a great time!

Not much to report from yesterday except for two and a half hours spent with an appreciative audience listening to John Boutte - who is on the stage again in 3 hours - at the greatest festival on-going this week anywhere. (And, oh yeah, the Campbell Brothers joining Robert Randolph onstage for a Jam in the midst of everything else) Plus Dwayne Dopsie, Tower of Power. And what other city has a band (The Po Boys Brass Band) inspired by seeing Bonerama playing its festival...even one that does a cover of their cover of Frankenstein?

The John Boutte show was just incredible. The audience was so appreciative and attentive you could hear a pin drop, but yet they were giving standing ovations and being so positive to John and the music. He said it actually moved him to tears!

Oh, and not only did the Campbell Bros get up on stage with Robert Randolph, but Susan Tedeschi joined in too!

Good seeing you and your lovely bride, Michelino!
