Hey Gards

Yes, it will be good fun. I can't wait to drink me some nice cold Abita.
Tips is also one of the sponsors and just for shits and giggles I requested info from the producers regarding THR being a sponsor so we'll see.

and yes, I got your email and hope you have collected all that cash owed to you!!

I have always wanted to see a show at Red Rocks.

The DFW Dylan/Willie show is that same weekend, but now that it's Shamarrless, I may have to consider this.

You will have a ball.
The money is allegedly going into my account on Monday, but might I add that is exactly what I was told one month ago,the only good thing is that I do know I will get it eventualy, but obviously with no interest, but I will wear that because there is a very strong chance of some more work from them later in the year, and I also get a big Merch van from them at mates rates every New years eve.

Hey Now Papa--- Just saw that George Porter & Runnin' Pardners have been added to this gig.......

I am trying to decide between this and the Widespread Panic-Denver shows.

Will you also be at Mountainside Mardi Gras?

Hard to pass up anything that is sure to be this good at Red Rocks.

Flights are still under 140 bucks, so I suppose I should decide what I would enjoy the most before too much longer.

Hope to see you again this summer in the High Rocky Mountain Air!!!

Hey now, MM

Yes, I will be at both shows and you can't really go wrong with either. MHMF will give you more music and is 2 days but the RR show will be less expensive due to obvious reasons. Which ever you choose, you have a place to crash if you so desire. Regardless, I hope to get to chill with you this summer too

thanks to this thread started by papa,.. a desire kept growin'....

couldn't help but take notice of this thread from the get go... and couldn't help but keep comin' back to it after repeated visits to the red rocks web site.... never been to those rocks.. now,.. i jus' hafta' go at some point...

kept lookin' at the mountainside mardi gras,.. and lookin' at it,.. and lookin' at it... thought we were goin' to do telluride again this year,.. but then another thought hit,.. maybe it's time to see a different part of that incredible state..

so,.. booked us two flights at 5:25 this very evenin',.. but not an hour later,.. the far better half returns home from a late day of work...she brings in the mail,.. and she turns all giddy like and announces she received an invite to her 30th class reunion,.. on aug. 8th...

bein' the full fledged knucklehead i am,.. i'm sittin' there thinklin' what??,.. why does that date sound so @#$%in' familiar???... duh...

and that right there is why southwest is the best damn airline in the world.....

if she decides she can't miss that reunion,.. no pain,.. no penalty,.. use the money sum other time,.. truth be told,.. i would hate to miss what sounds like a music line up from up above,.. but,.. truth be told but again,.. incredibly laid back colorado is one beautiful place,.. but bein' so laid back,.. it is not the absolute best place to see new orleans talent...

on the other hand,.. have seriously enjoyed every reunion the far better half has allowed me to attend,.. goin' all the way back to the ten year mark (no ring back then)... in return for allowin' me to go,.. she gets complete free reign if she so desires..

her graduatin' class was 600+,.. and i swear to this day they think cash murdock (i'll never regret writin' that name 20 years ago on my name tag) is one of their class mates.... i much prefer colorado to long island,.. but that particular class can party...

either way,.. whatever path she takes us down,.. win,. win.....

edit: jus' woke from havin' a great dream of bein' in colorado...musta been triggered by all time spent starin' at the pics on the red rock site... now i'm sad we're goin' to miss it.....

Papa, I am still deciding on Panic or Porter and Co. at Red Rocks, but as I am unfamilliar with most of the line-up for the Mile High Music Festival, (besides Galactic and a few others) I am leaning towards Mardi Gras at the Rocks........

I know its only one day, but what a great!!! line up at a "real nice" little venue, eh?

Seeing George Porter, Dr. John, Dumpsta and all the other Crescent City talent in the Mile High mountain air above Denver seems like it just may be too good to miss. (Those who have not yet had the opportunity for live music at Red Rocks are in for a mind-blowing treat)

I do have a few friends (Widespread Panic fanatics) who are still trying to talk me into hitting the MHMF with them, so I will just have to decide, and choose my groove over the next few daze.......

I will be in touch when I get my tickets, Matthew

Nice, Voodoohead. From what I hear, the Larimer is a very intimate place to see live music in downtown Denver

The Rockies are playing a night game against the Cubbies just a few blocks away. Colorado is stinking it up this year but Coors field is a great place to see a game

Hey Now Papa

After just reading that Sam Butera and Koko Taylor have both moved on, I realised that passing up a chance to see George Porter and Dr. John at Red Rocks would be a huge mistake on my part..........

I have always tried to catch my favorite bands each possible chance I get, as who knows how much longer any of them (or myself) will be around . When it's a line-up as strong as this, at a venue as stunning as the Rocks, its an opportunity I am NOT going to miss out on. Life is short, and there is no reason to put off doing what you love. The music of New Orleans, high in the Rocky Mountains-----I know I am gonna love that!!!

I just got my tickets, and look forward to hanging out with you in August; the 1st cold Abita's are on me!

Yeah, the more I think on this, the more obvious is becomes........

Red Rocks is a true national treasure, as is George Porter; a real no-brainer for sure!!! (which means it's perfect for a simpleton like me)

Is the Trombone Shorty gig going to work for you and yours?

The Rockies game at Coors Field might also be fun, it's one of the best stadiums I have ever been to, and I would be up for another visit, if it works out........

This is going to be an epic weekend, and I look forward to hanging out again!

Hey Matthew,

Did you get GA or reserved tix??

MormonMatthew
06-04-2009, 04:30 PM
Eric, when I called TicketsWest to order my seats, the woman I spoke with explained to me that the GA tickets would allow me access to several rows right in the front, then there is a huge section of assigned seating rows in the middle of the amptheater, then up top is a second section of GA seating........

It sounded odd (that is having a section of less expensive GA rows directly in the front, but she assured me that is the case) but almost all of the Red Rocks shows I have been to, the majority being Widespread Panic, were all GA seating.

I know they had all reserved seats for Van Morrison, and I think the couple of times I saw the Allman Brothers there it was also reserved, but am not sure.

If I was mislead about the front rows all being GA, let me know, I can always buy some reserved seats and get rid of the GA's at the Rocks.

Man, I am soooo pumped to be headed back to Red Rocks---The place is beyond amazing, and it seems that everyone who plays there brings something extra to thier performance, as if to acknowledge the majesty of the stunning surroundings..........

That actually sounds correct, albeit odd. Yes, all the Panic shows I've been to there are GA and first come, first serve. But some of the other shows, this is the way they do it. ie. John Prine and Levon Helm

The doors open at 12 so we will need to get there early. Maybe do a little tailgating early AM.

Just got my hotel for the weekend thru Priceline:
Thurs 8/06 & Friday 8/07 at the 3* Sheraton Denver for $64/nite - about a mile from Larimer where Shorty is playing and then Sat, 8/08 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Golden, Co for $50/nite - is only 4.48 miles from Red Rocks

Am thinking about the Cubs-Rockies Game on 8/09 before flying back that evening/

I stayed at the Denver Sheraton several years back, and it was quite nice, and also central to a ton of different places to eat and drink; I am sure you will like it, and of course your room rate is hard to beat.......

The Rockies game might be fun (Coors Field is beautiful) depending on my schedule--- I am still hopeful that other New Orleans bands will step up and add a night show on thursday or friday before the Red Rocks show on Saturday. I know the subdudes are in the Rocky Mountain area at that time, and they have strong ties to the Denver/Boulder area, so I will keep checking.

So yall,

How was the show?

Has yer mind returned from Colorado yet?

:p

Luckily, my mind is still in Colorado ;)

Man oh man what a stellar day in the Rocky Mtns at Red Rocks. My date and I got there to catch the last couple of songs by Johnny Sketch. We were shocked when we got past security to see a just a few hundred people in the stands. I thought to myself, it's still early and surely more people would show up as time went by.

After we got our seat which was the 2nd ROW almost dead center!! I got to talking to one of our neighbors who told us they only sold about 1000 tickets out of a possible 9000. I was shocked and very disappointed for the bands. Turns out a very poor marketing effort was to blame. I wasn't complaining though cuz I've never had such good seats at RR. Well, wasn't complaining until I went to fetch me a cold, cold, Abita and was told due the low ticket sales, Abita decided not to bring any of their beer. WTF?!? I was so looking forward to a lot of that goodness

Oh, well. After Johnny Sketch it was Big Sam's Funky Nation who played and danced his azz off in the beautiful sunshine. Papa Grows came on next and got the crowd all funked up. Then the heavy hitters showed up. George Porter and his Runnin' Pardners came on. George asked Jason Mingledorff to play with them and he didn't disappoint. They had to bring Russell Batiste out on a stretcher while blaming the high altitude and the green bud for his demise. He was just fine and got behind his drum set and went off.

Next up was Dirty Dozen just after dark and was awesome as usual. At one point they had about 13-14 musicians on stage. Then the good Dr John came on about 10:30ish. I am still in awe from his set. He too, asked Jason to play with the band and at one point was all alone stage right playing a mighty mean sax solo. You could tell he was on top of the world. Eventually, there were about 24 musicians on stage for the final song at midnight. This set and George's set were my favorites!

All sets were about an hour to an hour and a half +. New Era Brass Band second lined between almost all the sets up and down the stairs. For those of you who are on Facebook, I have posted some pics. I'm going to try to post some here soon.

All in all, it was one of the top 5 musical days I've ever had and will go back next year if they have it again.

Oh, and unfortunately MormonMatthew was not able to make it due to previous work commitments :( He sure missed a helluva day.
