Nice, 4 shows in Chicago. The last couple times they were here they sold out. I hope the additional shows will give me a better chance of scoring some tickets.

Very cool. Guess I better start doing some lobbying for the internet request for the Beacon Theater. I loved all their albums, but my preference would be for any of the four (Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied) that preceded the three on which they are focusing.

Had a friend do the AMEX pre-sale for us while I was away at CFF this past weekend and I have just realized that I misunderstood what was going on for the internet request show on 8/1/09 at The Beacon, which is the show we got tickets for. I thought it was an internet request for the attendees to select the album to be played that night, and I figured we couldn't go wrong because, by process of elimination, we would have to get one of the first four albums instead of the last three, which they are playing at the other shows. Well, what they are actually doing on these select internet request nights is having those with tickets to that show vote for the individual songs to comprise the entire set list. In other words, they are not doing a complete album, but will apparently play the songs that get the most votes from those who purchased tickets to the show. Not sure how I feel about this, but it is still the night that works best for me. I just don't want to see a greatest hits show. I may be trying to swap out for the Royal Scam show the night before now instead. Still thinking about it, but wanted to make sure others knew what was going on for these internet request nights if they didn't already.

Yeah, I'm curious to see what those attending the show will vote for. It could be great if they select mostly the lesser-known gems, but I just don't know what to expect. For example, they've opened up voting for the Boston internet request show to those who don't have tickets, and so far "Dr. Wu" is in the lead. That gives me hope. I'd feel a little better if they allowed us to choose from all their songs though; in a quick glance I noticed that "Kings" and "Midnight Cruiser" were not on the list, and those are some of my early favorites. I did take the opportunity to cast around ten votes for "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" though. There are definitely still enough gems on the list from which you could make a killer song list. Still thinking...

Their wry wit and sarcasm helped me through my college days. Soft spot for these guys. I'm voting for "Pearl of the Quarter", "The Boston Rag", and "Haitian Divorce". Deciding which of the NYC shows work for me.

Would love to see Larry Carlton join them. Maybe for "The Royal Scam" night.

Deciding which of the NYC shows work for me.

Hey Murray, it's looking like the one for which I'm already ticketed, Saturday 8/1, is the only one that works for me for sure, so I'm going to stick with that. I could try to squeeze the Friday Royal Scam show, but I wouldn't be able to do it the right way, with the "pre-game" festivities that I enjoy so much in any NYC trip. If you could do the Saturday show we could definitely make a nice afternoon and evening of it.

Of the ones they're doing, I'd be most interested in seeing "The Royal Scam," nicely weird even by their standards.

I guess of the 3, Royal Scam would be my choice. My favorite is Countdown to Ecstasy though. They did play a lot of those cuts on the last tour, and at Fest.

No question that's the call of the other three. I've been torn because of that. But the Saturday show works best for me logistically, and there is more "upside" potential, and definitely more suspense, leaving it in the hands of those with tickets to the show. I think either night would be great, but there is a great potential for some real rare gems with the audience request night.

DC or Baldimer or Philly or New York?

Lots of THs everywhere, but I'm guessing (selfishly) that the greatest chance for a large gathering would be in New York. Lots of us in New England and New York would make the trip to the City, and lots of other folks would too. But I don't think many of us New England/New York folk would travel to Philly or D.C. in the winter unless we had another reason to be there.

Yeah, I knew it sounded that way when I wrote it. But I'm also being realistic (and yes, selfish too). NYC is an easy trip for me. Train in and out. No way am I doing D.C. or Philly during the winter holidays unless I'm there for work or the rest of my family has a reason to be there. I'm guessing it's the same situation for a lot of folks. But NYC itself is a great destination for folks from all over to visit during that time.

Excellent. I believe tickets go on sale to the general public this morning. Let me know how you do. Doing both Friday and Saturday would be great, but unfortunately this is yet another tour that has been priced like a "final ride" for an aging act; I think tix are $100, $177 and $244. We got the $177 ones a little past mid-way back on the floor. After doing two nights of Van in seats priced higher than any of these (not to mention Fest, CFF, several other shows and yet another THR project (and at least one more to go)), I think my safest bet to remain married is to stick with one night.

That's the beauty of NYC, especially around the winter holidays--no one needs to come up with a stroke of genius because it's all good. My (heavily beer-snobbish-leaning) krewe has an annual ritual of getting together at that time for a stumble through one or more neighborhoods, and all we really do to plan is choose 3-5 bars that we want to hit during the course of the day/night, and the rough order in which we want to hit them. People join in and/or leave at all points in the journey, and there are lots of side adventures for food, a quick museum stop, etc. In the process, you invariably end up experiencing a lot of holiday magic in the city along the way. Oh, and putting on one heck of a nice buzz...

Well I just voted. Very tough, even with a pared-down list of about 40 songs from which you get to choose 20. Voted for both "The Royal Scam" and "Dirty Work." Unfortunately neither "Only A Fool Would Say That" nor " "Midnight Cruiser" were among the options. Actually very light on Can't Buy A Thrill; I think "Dirty Work," "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years" were the only ones offered, and I didn't vote for the latter two because there were enough favorites and rarities among the other choices for me. Nice to see some choice cuts from Pretzel Logic and Countdown to Ecstasy among the choices. I went very heavy on them and The Royal Scam, and made only a few selections from Gaucho and Aja.

Did you vote yet Murray? Are you getting into the city on Saturday, or staying over on Friday night?

As a classically trained oboeist (played in the Cincy Chamber Orchestra for years), she really never cared for most of what I listened too growing up, especially not anything jazz based. She liked orchestrated things though, like some Beatles, some rock operas like Tommy, and a bit of Moody Blues. i did take her to Moody Blues last summer, which she seemed to enjoy.

Last night was the first show in Boston, and it was scheduled to be the first performance of the special set list featuring Aja in its entirety. Surprise! The comments following the article from folks who attended the show are also encouraging about what to expect for this tour.

http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2009/07/23/a_royal_treat_from_a_lively_steely_dan/

But the real surprise came after “Aja’’ was finished, when Fagen announced that - thanks to a provocative interview several weeks ago with Globe music critic Sarah Rodman, during which she complained that the band wasn’t dedicating a night in Boston to “The Royal Scam’’ - Steely Dan would play “The Royal Scam.’’

The audience erupted, and so did the show. It’s a snide, mean-spirited, whip-smart collection, and from the opening bars of “Kid Charlemagne’’ through the sinister closing title track, the concert was transformed from classy to cranking. By the end of the main set, Fagen wasn’t reaching for notes; he was biting them, shaking each one in his jaw and spitting it out with a sneer that you could hear.

Great news Bry! Very psyched that you are going to get to see this tour too, because I know you were pained at the thought of missing it.

Ever since you posted the Larry Carlton news I've been debating trying to catch the Royal Scam night in NYC in addition to the internet request night we'll be seeing with Carlton the following night. But after pulling an expensive two-fer for the Van shows that the wonderful Mrs. Lit did not question, I know that this one would put her over the edge--especially given several other indulgences I've made of late (and more to come, like my solo NOLA trip in October, and what's now looking like a very good chance for a business trip to the Bay area that just happens to coincide with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass). Still, I've been listening to lots of SD to warm up for this show, and every time I cycle through the Royal Scam I get a twinge at the thought of missing any one of those songs. I am also a bit worried about the selections for which others in the crowd may have voted for the night we'll be seeing. It could be great, with lots of the rarer gems, or it could be a greatest hits show that fails to take full advantage of Carlton's presence. I'm feeling like making a push for the Royal Scam show as insurance, just to make sure I see all those great tunes at a minimum.

If I have to choose only one of the two Carlton NYC shows--which, in the end, is likely to be the case because I value my marriage--I would still choose the night we're seeing because I think there is an advantage to seeing them a night after they've had the chance to play together for the first time in a long time (and probably the first time ever with Carlton for many of those in the band) and work out any kinks. I think our show will still probably be heavy on the Carlton-era material from Royal Scam and Aja, and I'm also interested to hear him play on a lot of tracks that he wasn't on previously.

Yep, that's the one. Having purchased the former the morning they went on sale, I was none too pleased when I first read it. But then I realized that the shows featuring Larry Carlton were not included, so I felt a little better.

This is one of the rare times that I've mis-judged the market for tickets for any event. I figured they would sell out quickly and that I would be happy to have gotten good tickets for face value. The thing I failed to appreciate was that they would add four additional Beacon shows, a Connecticut show and and an Atlantic City show immediately after they started selling tickets for the original Beacon shows. That really diluted the market and sent the prices down. I probably could have scored the primo seats now for the price I paid for the mid-level ones (which I'm guessing is close to the deal you got for the Chicago show). Oh well--still totally psyched to be going, and seeing Larry Carlton.

I can only hope. Van is cranking up his Astral Weeks tour again this fall and is playing a great little theater in Waterbury, CT (the same place I saw Derek Trucks this winter). Tickets range from $175 to $350, and there isn't a doghouse big enough for me if I try to justify paying that much to see him again after seeing him twice in NYC during the first go round with these shows. I'm holding out hope that I can score a "cheap" single on the night of the show from someone who just needs to dump a ticket.

Congrats, that's a great deal. Yeah, I was camping at CFF the weekend of the AMEX pre-sale and I was so worried about missing out that I had my friend get the tickets with his card. I'll give a report after Saturday's internet request show, where I'm meeting up with the Steeleyes.

Coincidentally, this song just popped up while my iPod was on full shuffle this morning. I had almost forgotten about how priceless the intro is. Notably, this was also their last live performance as Steely Dan until the early 90s. If you don't remember it, it is well worth a listen. Does anyone know who that was doing the intro? Hysterical.

Yes, and now I'm reminded of a great Steely Dan bootleg cassette I've got from the Record Plant in 1974, where they play great versions of both "Bodhisattva" and "King of the World," among others (I recall that my favorite tracks on it are "Boston Rag" and "Any Major Dude Will Tell You"). Great time with the Steeleyes yesterday, and special guest appearance by Tangie and Jude. Excellent show.

It started with the announcement that, after thousands of votes, almost every song from Aja was selected by the audience, so they decided to start the show playing Aja in its entirety, followed by the other songs selected. Very cool set up--one of the back-up singers puts the vinyl on the turntable and drops the needle, "Black Cow" begins and we are off. It sounded perfect. Back-up singers were particularly impressive, and right on. Here is the setlist, and a few comments:

Black Cow
Aja
Deacon Blues
(singer flips record)
Peg
Home At Last
I Got The News
Josie
(standing O)
Kid Charlemagne
Hey 19
Dirty Work (sung by back-up singers alternating verses--very good)
Ricki Don't Lose That Number
Black Friday
Daddy Don't Live In That New York City No More (Becker vocal)
Babylon Sisters
Any Major Dude Will Tell You
FM
Love Is Like An Itchin' In My Heart-Band Intros
Dr. Wu
Don't Take Me Alive
Reelin' In The Years
My Old School (E)

It was great to see Larry Carlton, but they are clearly working out some boundary issues when he joins in. He was very restrained during the Aja set, and didn't even play the solo on "Peg." Jon Herington, the music arranger for this tour and the regular lead guitarist, is a very able guy who had some very nice solos; and Becker's solos were excellent. But every time they turned Larry loose it was like he was playing an entirely different--and much better--instrument. His notes are clarion clear; like having Jon Scofield in the band. And as Murray put it, the "filigree" he provides on so many of the tunes is just fantastic. He finally took his first solo on "Josie," and he played all his parts and then some on a great "Kid Charlemagne," which also got a standing O. He also did a very nice solo on "Ricki Don't Lose That Number," but I thought his best performance of the night was on "Don't Take Me Alive," which featured lots of his "filigree" touches.

The drummer, Keith Carlock, was excellent. He really stood out to me last night; I didn't appreciate before what great drumming songs so many of these are. He was especially great on "Aja."

Interesting aside for me: Catherine Russell was one of the back-up singers. She is a great artist in her own right. I saw her as the featured artist at one of Levon Helm's Midnight Rambles in Woodstock a few years ago and she was great--performing a wide range of material, all very well (including a great cover of the Grateful Dead's "New Speedway Boogie"). Her father was Louis Armstrong's musical director, so she's definitely got the pedigree too. It was a very nice added bonus for me to see that she was one of the singers last night. As mentioned above, the ladies sang a great version of "Dirty Work," alternating the verses, and it was one of the highlights for me. In addition to "Black Cow," I recall that they also sounded particularly great on "Babylon Sisters"--a song I often play at "11."

Along with "Dirty Work," my top picks for my votes for the setlist last night were "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" and "Dr. Wu." I was thrilled to see that they all made the list, and my confidence in the audience, who along with me voted them in, was restored. "Any Major Dude..." was probably my favorite of the night, and the song I most wanted to see. They were really firing on all cylinders for that, and I thought Fagen's voice--which was strained at times, but not distractingly so--sounded the best on that performance. It was great to see "Dr. Wu"--a clear favorite for our crowd--but I thought that was one of the more disjointed performances last night. My other favorite performance was "Don't Take Me Alive," which sounded great and had everything I wanted to see, including the great Larry Carlton parts.

Finally, for those still considering seeing this tour, you should know that tickets were plentiful on the street, and mostly going for less than half of face value. Very surprising last night because that was the most in-demand show of this run, but as I've mentioned before I think they really diluted the market by adding so many shows. Suffice to say that, if you have any interest at all, now is the time to see these guys.

PS: I should add that Fagen was the most animated and spirited I have ever seen him; he and Becker are obviously having a great time, and really enjoy playing in New York (where I believe Becker lives, maybe Fagen too).

I am still smiling from that show. So great to hang with Lit, his friend Rob and the Steeleyes....we were all feeling quite good.

We managed to get perfect seats in the right orchestra for only $70. We snagged them right before the show started...all was perfect!

What a magical night, so glad we decided to go.

Awesome! Great review Lit! It's gonna be a long month until I get to see them...
Speaking of Levon, I just read an article on him in RS which mentioned that Fagen has been doing several of the Midnight Rambles. He lives nearby.

A little taste of the Carlton goodness on "Kid Charlemagne" last night:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpSpYoX4x-U

Obviously not the highest quality video or audio, but stay with it until it gets to Larry's parts and you'll be happy you did; and I think you'll see what I'm saying about his tone being clearer than anything else going on up there. And he makes it look so effortless it's almost ridiculous (and from where we sat I also thought he bore a passing resemblance to Larry David, which made for an interesting image when I tried to imagine Larry David playing guitar like that...).

BTW, Catherine Russell is the singer closest to the edge of the stage; her hair was braided when I saw her previously, so I didn't recognize her last night until they announced her.

I've got permagrin again just watching this clip. Think I'll watch it again...

I didn't appreciate before what great drumming songs so many of these are.

Absolutely! The Dan's drum chair has a long and rich history:

Thanks ('), that's a great read. I knew about Gordon and Keltner but not a lot of the others. One interesting drumming tidbit the article doesn't mention is something my brother told me today: Chevy Chase was the first drummer with Becker and Fagen. Apparently they were college friends and called themselves The Leather Canary at the time; and then when Chase left they changed their name to Steely Dan. The rest, as they say, is history.

My last bus is 11:30 :(

Opening act takes the stage shortly before 8:00 and plays until 8:30; Steely Dan takes the stage at 8:45. We planned to skip the opening act and get to the theater by 8:30, which worked out perfectly. If you have time to kill beforehand, the Amsterdam Ale House is around the corner on Amsterdam and 76th. It has a pretty lively pre-show scene and a good beer selection with decent prices (much better in both respects than you'll find inside the Beacon), and ok food too.

I believe they played until shortly before 11:00, as I recall looking at the time when we left and thinking we would need to bust a move to make the 11:30 train home from Grand Central. We decided to stay around for a post-show beer and go for the 12:17 instead, but we definitely could have made the 11:30, even with a not-too-short cab ride to get to Grand Central.

Have a blast. I'll be interested to see how the songs selected by tonight's crowd differ from those selected by Saturday's crowd.

Dr. Wu:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbVALZuQbXA

As I reported above, I did not think this was one of the better performances of the night--among other things, Fagen's voice was off (he apologizes for his cold mid-lyric here), and I thought the sax and backup singers were too--but starting at 5:30 you can hear, but not see, the great Larry Carlton into to "Don't Take Me Alive," which is cut off in the version below.

DTMA:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHS9XeOPWjI

Interesting that they were able to follow up one of the weakest performances of the night with one of the strongest. I get the sense that they (i.e., Becker and Fagen) don't like "Dr. Wu" nearly as much as the audience does, and that they don't practice it much. I caught a half hour show on Fuse TV the other night about this tour and it was mostly an interview with the two of them, who, as you might expect, are still quite quirky and irreverent (and very funny/sarcastic). They openly admitted that they have no use at all for nostalgia about their music, but they know their audience does. If think if they had their druthers they'd be playing all new stuff, but I also think they have been amused by the strong audience reaction to the album concept, and that they are having a lot of fun with it now, almost in spite of themselves.

Not much, as it turns out. Only difference appears to be "Black Friday" on Saturday vs. "Do It Again" tonight. They also played "I Got The News" on Saturday and did not do that tonight, but I'm guessing that they threw that in as a bonus on Saturday to enable them to play Aja in its entirety to begin the show, and not because it was selected by the audience voting. They played all six other songs from Aja tonight, but they scattered them throughout the show and did not play them in album order.

They have one more internet request night in New York next week; with this level of consistency in the votes for these two shows I'd have to guess that the next one will be almost identical.

And, yes, I'm talking to myself.

Lit,
Thanks so much for the great reviews of the Steely Dan shows in New York. I am so looking forward to the shows here at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles I’m going on Aug 24th for the The Royal Scam show and then on Aug 25th the Internet Request show. Larry Carlton has got to be one of the best living guitarist of our time. To see him also perform with Becker and Fagen is even more special for me.
I am that person that is very nostalgic about those early albums. I think I listened to their music more than anyone else all the way through college. Still almost all of their early songs are just magical to me.

Even better it looked like you got to party with Tangie, Jude and the Great Krewe! Looked like a fun time and just some great nights of music in the Big City.

Can't add much to Lit's great review of last Sat's show. Even though he didn't seem completely comfortable with his new on-stage role, when they turned him loose, Larry Carlton was awesome. WOW! Great stuff. It seemed that the encore of "My Old School" was one big audience sing-a-long.

Great show!
They came out smoking on 'Kid Charlemagne'. Kind of odd in that there was no build up to it, but hey, it is the first tune on the album. Larry Carlton was just amazing. No need to even look over to see who was on lead- you knew it was Larry just from his tone and clarity. He also shined on 'Don't Take Me Alive' and of course 'Royal Scam'. What a treat! He, Becker, and Jon Herington played so well together, whether doing twin leads or twin rhythm. I think they have played enough shows together by now to mesh seamlessly. My favorite tune from the album is 'Green Earrings', and man, it crushed! 'Haitian Divorce' did not disappoint either, surprising that such a deep tune was a big crowd pleaser.

After the album play ended they cotinued with a pretty standard set of hits, including 'Peg', Reelin' In The Years', 'My Old School' etc. I was hoping for more tunes from 'Countdown', but I'm not complaining. Really great show! Then meeting Warren Haynes out in the lobby was a cool treat.

BTW- went to eat before the show at newly crowned Top Chef Master Rick Bayliss' Frontera Grill. I can only say that Mexican fare can be gourmet!!!

Nice review Bry. Glad you got to a Carlton show and it sounds like a great one with Larry worked in more comfortably now that he's had a few shows under his belt. He certainly shined on "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" when I saw them, and those were probably my two favorite songs of the show. Would have loved to hear him on "Green Earrings," "The Royal Scam" and especially "Haitian Divorce." I've always wondered: is that his guitar doing those great "squeaky" parts?

Is that your pic of the marquee? Very cool shot in any event.

One more question: how was Fagen's voice? I wondered how much of what I heard at the show I saw was attributable to the nagging cold he had, and how much was simply what his voice normally sounds like these days. From some of the reviews I've read of other shows all over this tour it sounds like "normal" for him is somewhat more raspy even without the cold.

Thanks. Yes, Larry pretty much played lead on the entire album, relinquishing at most a share of the lead. He did some nice fills and some cool dual rhythms in the second half of the show as well. In some cases he reproduced the original RS recording note for note, but other times expanded on it. Great player, that man! Yep, my picture. As for Fagen- I thought his voice sounded great, not raspy. I think he has trouble hitting some of the highest notes (age will do that), but those fabulous backing gals filled them in nicely, wasn't a distraction at all. I'd love to see them again, but playing two albums instead of one...have seen 'greatest hits' shows enough already.

Woohoo!!!!!

I just discovered that Steely Dan (possibly my favourite band of all time) confirmed two nights at Toronto's Massey Hall, and today I pulled the trigger and snapped up tix for both shows!

The first show is on November 25th, and it is dedicated to "Aja": 12th row!

The second is on November 26th, and it is dedicated to "the Royal Scam": 4th row!

Four tix ended up setting me back close to $700, but I'm not complaining one bit. Considering how much I love this band, it's a no-brainer!

I opened up two browser windows and waited for the tix to go onsale online. Meanwhile, I called Ticketbastard around 6 minutes before they went on sale, and by the time I got through to a human™, it was less than a minute before they were scheduled to pull the trigger. You guys are giving me goosebumps already!

I've caught SD twice in my life: once in Toronto at the Molson Amphitheatre (front row!), and the other time at Jazzfest (amazing). When people ask me about what they were like, I always say: "You have to realize that these guys would round up some of the finest musicians on the planet, they would go into a studio and record some tracks and then they would DISCARD the entire thing and get OTHER amazing musicians to play the exact same thing. They're a perfectionists. With that in mind, just imagine how amazing you have to be to be in their touring band...."
