Yeah, we know that this week everyone's thinking about Crawfishfest, but you should mark your calendars for the next festivals coming up in the NJ/NY area.
June 5th, 6th, 7th is the Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival. This is the first time in years that it is not the same weekend as Crawfishfest, so take advantage of the opportunity! We belong to the organization that puts this one on (Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation, all volunteers). So come to hear great music on 3 stages in a gorgeous setting, overlooking the Navesink River. And did we mention that it is FREE?
Yes, FREE!
www.redbankfestival.com
Friday night's headliner is the Sonny Kenn Band; if you've never seen Sonny, you are in for a treat. He is an amazing rocking guitarist. Saturday night's headliner is the Deanna Bogart band; she just won Instrumentalist of the Year-Horn at the Blues Music awards. Sunday's headliner is legendary jazz saxophonist Houston Person.
We hope to see a bunch of Threadheads there! (and you can drop in at Cindy's store on Saturday afternoon and bother her)
June 13th and 14th is the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in NYC. http://www.bigapplebbq.org/ We'll be going on Saturday. Howard Tate is one of the artists playing that day. (Meat & Music--what more could you want?)

Howard Tate is being backed by The Sweet Divines, who are a great neo-soul girl group from Brooklyn.
Junior Brown is playing that Sunday, too.
It's not a festival, per se, but the bandshell in Prospect Park is the best venue in the entire city. You can't beat the super-chill vibe on the lawn amongst the trees, and they let you bring food and drink in, too. As long as you don't bring any glass, you'll be fine. It is VERY relaxed there, and in the past I've brought a pitcher of mojitos, boxed wine, even 2 liter plastic soda bottles filled with beer from nearby Bierkraft! The summer-long series is essentially free, although there is a whopping $3 suggested donation for the high-rollers.
The whole lineup for Celebrate Brooklyn is here:
http://www.briconline.org/celebrate/schedule.asp
The season starts on Monday, June 8th with David Byrne. Yeah, the same amazing show that cost $70 at Radio City will cost $3 in Brooklyn. I will warn you that the first show of Celebrate Brooklyn is traditionally jam-packed, and with Byrne being there, that will definitely be the case. The show starts at 8:00 with the gates opening at 6:30. Plan on a lengthy line being in place at 6:30, so the earlier you (or someone who's saving space for you) can get there, the better. Bring a picnic and chill for a while. But expect it to get massively crowded, so plan ahead and pee well before the music starts.
In more Jazz Fest-centric news, the Lincoln Center Midsummer Night Swing begins on July 7th with Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers. These shows feature an elevated wooden dance floor and cost $15 if you want to go on the floor. Otherwise, you can see for free from the sides (and you can hear well anywhere). NOTE: You cannot bring any bags or purses on the dance floor, but they do have a bag check available. (They are very strict about this!) The shows are all for different styles of dance, and each one includes a dance lesson, a dance performance, two sets of the band, and a DJ in between. Other artists include two nights of the Ponderosa Stomp, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and many more.

We're hoping to make the Kermit/Lincoln Center show and the rockabilly show that the Stomp is putting on Friday July 17th. We'll be hanging on the sidelines.
Perhaps we'll see you there, Brian.

Oops, forgot to mention that our adopted band from New Orleans, Soul Project, will be playing at the Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival on Sunday, the 7th. So come to Red Bank for some funk! (http://www.soulprojectnola.com/)

Not sure if its actually the Circle Line, but there are some great cruises around Manhattan with killa bands, nor am I sure of Website, but Google it...
One warning: cruise doesn't go all the way around the island. A few years back I saw Marcia Ball & Terrance Simien, was going orgasmic as we approached 59th St. Bridge ("Feelin' Groovy" Simon & Garfunkel), then we turned around... oh well, it was still a blast!

Great line-up. Saw Sonny Landreth & Chris Smither on a cruise last year.
Haven't decided which one(s) to attend this summer. Most of them are weeknights, which is difficult (and you've got to be there on time or the boat leaves without you)

My company sponsors and runs the ticketing for the Rockin' The River Cruises, so I'll be on a bunch of those boats all summer long. They have some great bills this year. Should be fun!

Bumping to remind you about this weekend's Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival. http://www.redbankfestival.com/ This is a great FREE festival.
If you've never been to Red Bank NJ, Here's some info: http://visit.redbank.com/
You can get there easily by train on the North Jersey Coast line, so if you're in New York City, it's a great day trip. http://www.njtransit.com PGF Friday and Red Bank Saturday? What do you think?
Hope to see some Threadheads this weekend. I'll even volunteer my store as a meetup point (wish I had some mufalettas to offer . . . )
(that's Backward Glances at 43 Broad Street)

Here's what's on for us this weekend. Hope we might see a few Threadheads at:
Saturday afternoon: The Big Apple BBQ Block Party http://www.bigapplebbq.org/ Howard Tate, the Sweet Divines, Lucero, Saron Crenshaw and lots of pig . . . Free!(the music, not the food)
Saturday night: Carolyn Wonderland at Joe's Pub. 9:30 pm. Only $15!.
Sunday afteroon: my niece's "Come as your favorite rock star" 4th birthday party--no wait, I don't think you can come to that.
Sunday night: Dumpstaphunk and Soul Project at the Saint in Asbury Park, NJ. www.thesaintnj.com This is a very small club and should be a really cool venue to see them in. Also only $15! We have been told that Soul Project is on at 8:00 and Dumpstaphunk is on at 9:00.
Anyone interested in joining us for any of these fun events (not the birthday party)?

I saw a few things that caught my eye for the last weekend in June, when we will be in NY/NJ area. The cruises look interesting.
My company sponsors and runs the ticketing for the Rockin' The River Cruises, so I'll be on a bunch of those boats all summer long. They have some great bills this year. Should be fun!
May catch you at one if we dont do a concert in Central Park. Wrong weekend but I love Ryan Shaw...

We missed you, too! Saw you leaving the Pavilion, and yelled "hey Sharon" but couldn't catch up with you in the crowd.
It was great meeting you at Fest; see you next year!

Dumpsta was a lot of fun(ky), and Soul Project was smoking. Saw Frequinox and Jules there. The place was packed.
