View Full Version : I have a Possum in my Kitchen

Gards
05-26-2009, 12:55 AM
I heard some strange noises in my house over night and didnt think much of it.
Then when my friend woke me up early as he was heading back to the airport.
He said by the way you have a Possum in the Kitchen.I then looked round the house and saw that the little bugger had done a bit of marauding after he came down the chimney. He had been rude enough to knock over a few CDs and DVDs and then try and get out through the flywire screen in my Bathroom so some toiletries and stuff went flying but luckily no damage anywhere.Anyway he somehow made it to the Kitchen where my friend locked him in and left the door to the Backyard open, but the Possum has taken up residence on the window sill above the sink and will not move and has been there since 8am and its now 2.46PM.
These guys have realy sharp claws and fire up if they think you are cornering them,so I have left him there until I can borrow big industrial gloves or something.
Normaly I would tackle a problem like this whilst having a beer or some other relaxant, but seeing that I have to pack this afternoon and also organise travel insurance and some other stuff.I think that MR Possum may be there for a while.
Cheers
Gards

too funny,.. "by the way,.. you have a possum in your kitchen"...

i too,.. have a great possum story,.. but i'll save that.... that '"tail" did get me thinkin' of sumthin' else though...
---------------------

the lone ranger was ambushed and captured by an enemy indian war party... The indian chief proclaims, "so, you are the great lone ranger... in honor of your past glory, you will be granted three more days of life before we end your journey... but,.. before we that time passes, we will grant you three requests... what is your first request?"

the lone ranger responds.., "i'd like to speak to my horse."

the chief nods and silver is brought before the lone ranger,.. who whispers in silver's ear, and then he sends off his faithful and trusted steed with a "hi ho silver."....

later that evening,.. silver returns with a beautiful blonde woman on his back... the woman is allowed to enter the lone ranger's tent where she spends the night....

the next morning the indian chief admits that he is impressed... "you have a very fine and loyal horse,.. but we will still kill you in two days... what is your second request?"...

the lone ranger again asks to speak to his horse... silver is brought to him and he again whispers in the horse's ear... as before,.. after a "hi ho",.. silver takes off across the plains and disappears over the horizon...

later that evening,.. silver again returns,.. this time with a voluptuous brunette,.. even more attractive than the blonde... she too is allowed to enter the lone ranger's tent,..where they spend the night...

the following morning the indian chief is again impressed... "you are indeed a man of many talents,.. but we will still kill you tomorrow... what is your last request?"...

the lone ranger responds,.. "i'd like to speak to my horse... completely alone please!"....

the chief is curious, but he agrees and silver is brought to the lone ranger's tent...

once they're alone,.. the lone ranger grabs silver by both ears,.. looks him square in the eyes and says, "this is it my friend,.. one more chance,.. now listen up... i will repeat myself for the very last time,.. bring POSSE!"
----------------------------

possum,.. posse,...pussy,.. sumthin' of a stretch i know,.. but it's late,.. and my personal possum story is way too long........

forget the possum,.. get packin' gards....

i'll supply the fishin' tackle,.. you can leave that at home.....

Hahahahahahaha...don't talk to me about possums!! Little %$^#@*&'s have taken up residence in my ceiling and come down the chimney whenever they please. A pair of sturdy gardening gloves plus bribery (an apple) should do the trick. But keep the 1 wood handy.

Safe travels and catch up when you get back!

Ooh, this sounds like a job for Ian Faith and his cricket bat! "Certainly, in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful."

Yeah I dont know if old bat goes up to one louder, but it is quite funny obviously we dont want to hurt the little guy and he will not move the way we wish him too because he is scared of the big people, singing to him has not worked,so maybe my housemate will have to purchase some heavy duty gloves in the morning to finish the job.
Otherwise I might try some music to remove him.If only I had kept my copy of Living On A Prayer, but I think that Fox On The Run will get him going.

The little fella has left the building,we gave him a little bit of incentive outside the kitchen door with some tomato and a polite push with a good old plastic garden rake.
Lots of people use the traps here, especialy those that have nice gardens and plants that the Possums eat, but the the possums always return, but as they are a protected species most of us try and be as sensible as possible, you try and stop the way they can get into your house, gardens are a different story but thats no problem for me,but when I had dogs they would always be trying to get the possums, but I certainly wouldnt encourage them, but some idiots do,I have no problem sharing the area with Possums,as we have lots of trees and vegetation, but Rats now that another story

I had one of those in my kitchen once. Not unusual for folks who live in the south but my place was in the middle of downtown Atlanta. Our big, badass cat Ali was getting out of there as fast as he could. It reminded me of the old Warner Brothers cartoon where the cat mistook the boxing kangaroo for a giant mouse.

I lived in an old shack that backed on to Royal Melbourne Golf Course for 9 years and the wild life used to love our ceiling,I dont know who used to win the fights up there, between the Possums and the Rats, but I was a lot younger then and used to sleep well but always woke up, because it sounded like the royal rumble each time they got going

I discovered a mouse in my townhouse yesterday, and I'm not thrilled. I had one zooming around 6 months ago, and when my dog Harley saw it, he lost all control of ALL his bodily functions. He's not a very brave dog...sigh.

The last time, I had all kinds of people tell me that I should use "humane" traps (and I did), but they didn't work at all. This time I'm going to kick it old skool - whack!

A mama possum had 6 babies under my house 2 summers ago. Trapped every one of em. Then had to fill up the hole so they wouldn't come back and move in with all the grandchildren. The babies were kind cute, but generally I can't stand em. Giant rats with a pouch.

So what IS an Australian possum???

So what IS an Australian possum???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possum

A possum (plural form: possums) is any of about 69 small to medium-sized arboreal marsupial species native to Australia, New Guinea, and Sulawesi (and introduced to New Zealand and China). The name derives from their resemblance to the opossums of the Americas. (The name is from Algonquian wapathemwa, not Greek or Latin, so the plural is possums, not possa.) Possum is also used in North America as a short form of Opossum. A possum’s diet is mainly plant-based i.e. leaves, fresh gum tips and flowers, however they also occasionally eat insects, eggs and meat. An open compost bin in a backyard becomes an enticing smorgasbord for a hungry urban possum.

ok possum story. A couple of years ago, it was a freezing winter...and i warmed up blankets and an old sleeping bag to put out for the outside kitties that wander. i was getting ready to go to bed, and decided to check...sure enough, there was someone all snuggled under the blankets. so i'm petting and cooing to the 'kitty'....then i slowly pulled back the blankets....and was basically touching noses with a little baby possum. i very slowly backed up and ran into the house.

dont mean to be an alarmist, but here in Missouri, possum's are known to carry rabies. they will 'play dead' and not move, but if provoked enough they will strike at you with those scarry teeth.
when i lived in Jefferson City i had a problem with them taking up residence on the steps that lead to the 2nd floor apartment. i couldnt figure out how to move him/her without injury, but when i tried to step over it, the hissing & teeth baring started. one night i slept in my car for 2 hours and woke up to find it gone. the next time a fellow tenant, who was a guard at the prison, maced the little varmit. yup, huge scary man, maced the little critter - but it worked.

Ours can sometimes, get fairly big and they will scratch you quite badly as you try to get them out,if they get close, not to mention the unwanted deposits on the carpet etc which I left for my housemate to clean up.
They look cute in a tree or on the lawn, but people with a green thumb, tend to start behaving like Bill Murray in CaddyShack when they see them.

Bodyclock must be a bit out of wack, with crossing of all the time zones, because I didnt go to bed until after 2am following on from the 26 or so hours of flight and other travel related fun,and still woke up about 6.15 AM and couldnt get back to sleep.

Hopefuly the clouds will clear a bit later on,and I will go up the Empire State Building.I have done it before, but that was 7 years ago,as far as I am concerned its a must do,if the visability is good its the same as being in Paris and going up the El Tower, great iconic views.

The Grand Central Shuttle runs across 42nd St, so you catch it at Times Square, not Penn Station. But unless it's wet, I'd just walk the whole way, 20-30 minutes and you get to see more of the city.

If the lines are long at the ESB, consider the Top of the Rock instead.

The Grand Central Shuttle runs across 42nd St, so you catch it at Times Square, not Penn Station. But unless it's wet, I'd just walk the whole way, 20-30 minutes and you get to see more of the city.

Unfortunatley not today I didnt bother trying either high tower, because it has been reminding me of a London Summers day, light mist and or very light rain for most of the day.
I have still had fun walked around for hours and have seen lots of good things and chatted with some interesting people, and after 5 I had to politely ask plenty of people to get their umbrella out of my face,it was starting to get amusing when everyone was rushing to the Subway after work,I would be interested to see how they go in a big downpour.

That picture was today's picture on my Kliban desk calendar. It will go up on the bulletin board. :)

My Grandmother was the Bookkeeper for Kliban's agent. I have all knd of stuff packed away. Someday when we have a house (or room for the packed away stuff), I know who to give things to.

Oh, how interesting! I'm sure that even with all the work involved, she must have had a few good laughs.

And, you're very sweet for considering Jenn & me. :)

i'm on the puter right now because i have an angry hissin' creature in my kitchen....

was sittin' watchin' the yankee/indians game on tbs in the family room off of the kitchen when my far better half lost her grip on a big ol' glass pitcher.. it hit the tile floor,... and tile doesn't play bouncy very well... big smash and then i decided to dash when she let out a stream of blue language... i think she needed some personal time...

that got me runnin' in fear to the puter room to follow the game on line until the air clears..... i'll do the 2nd follow up sweep in a bit... seems i'm the go to guy in this house when it comes to findin' missin' pieces of broken glass... they seem to enjoy findin' my naked feet......
