Per requested, here is a thread for Threadheads if you are contemplating quitting smoking. If you are considering it, here is the free website I used. It is through the American Lung Association and it is called the Freedom From Smoking website. It walks you through your quit starting three weeks before your quit date. They give you assignments to do every day and they totally mentally prepare you for it. There is also a live forum with others who are struggling and quitting as well. Someone always responds to your post. There are eight modules in all. I am currently on Module 6. So far I have been successful. lol, today is my one week anniversary. :)
Oh, and if anyone else asks about the grammar in my following QuitMeter, it is an automatic meter, it is not me typing it out. All I do is type F12 and it prints it out for me and no, I am not going to manually fix it every single time I print it. ;)
Thank you for your support. And here is the link to the website:

I have been quit for 1 Week, 10 hours, 50 minutes and 5 seconds (7 days). I have saved $13.41 by not smoking 89 cigarettes. I have saved 7 hours and 25 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 5/18/2009 12:00 AM

Thankfully I got this one out of the way a long time ago. Smoked from junior year of high school through junior year in college and was up to 1 1/2 packs a day of Winstons at the end. Had tried to quit unsuccessfully a few times. I went to school in the Netherlands for a semester and started smoking roll-your-owns and various European brands. Woke up one morning and coughed up something I never wanted to see again. Stopped that day; had one other cigarette a few months later after seeing a man get shot and killed. Felt like crap. Never had another cigarette since. That was 1987.
Good luck to all you who are trying. Personally, I've never been big on providing a lot of support to others for this type of thing because imo it all ultimately has to come from you. I really think it's a tough love type of thing that you have to reach by yourself. You will know when you are ready to make a change. It takes a lot of will power and you have to be strong enough to know that this is it and that you refuse to let anything or anyone own you. At least that's how it works for me. It's your life you're saving, not anyone else's.

Today is my one year anniversary if being smoke free! I used that awful tasting gum for a week or two. It tasted so bad that I would have to chew 1 piece of nicorette with 1 piece of regular gum. After a few days, I would chew a 1/2 of the nicorette with 1 piece of regular gum. After a couple of weeks, every time that I had a craving I just needed a piece of regular gum to get through. Hang in there Monica. It gets easier.
I have a friend that only smokes in Vegas and during JazzFest. He has to quit every time he returns home. I think he is torturing himself. He comes back from Nola missing the great times that he just had, he is broke and has to quit smoking again every year.

So I wandered over to the link you provided and I registered....but I honestly doubt that I'll follow through with all the modules. I think its a TERRIFIC resource for those who want or need it, but I find that even talking about smoking when you're trying to quit can be problematic!
When I quit the last time, I just woke up one day and said: "Screw this. It is enough already." I immediately said "I'm a non-smoker now" because I knew that if I counted the length of time that I had been smoke-free, I was really just counting the amount of time that had elapsed since I had my LAST cigarette. I literally reprogrammed my mind into believing that I no longer smoked...period.
The other thing I did was that i convinced myself that if I smoked while wearing the patch, I would drop dead. Instantly. I decided that if I REALLY wanted a smoke, I would have to remove the patch and wait two full hours. Of course, by the time I went through that thought process, the craving had passed. Besides, I didn't want to waste an expensive patch!
I once tried the gum, but it didn't work for me at all. You're supposed to bite it twice and then "park" the gum in your cheek, but I just chewed it like regular chewing gum and got the worst nicotine headache you could imagine.

"This online version will work for you if you commit to the following:
2. Complete all of the assignments. Some of the assignments may seem silly or bothersome to you. We have found in our experience that participants who complete all of the assignments have a higher rate of success in quitting smoking for good.
Pay special attention to the activities you find yourself resisting. It is interesting that people often resist the activities that help them the most. Our research shows that the people who do all the activities have a higher permanent success rate than those who don’t. And you do want to quit don’t you? ;-)"
The other thing I did was that i convinced myself that if I smoked while wearing the patch, I would drop dead. Instantly. I decided that if I REALLY wanted a smoke, I would have to remove the patch and wait two full hours. Of course, by the time I went through that thought process, the craving had passed.
Good idea, Ross. I think you'd be a pro at this program. And remember, the urge to smoke will pass in 3 to 5 minutes whether you smoke or not.
I once tried the gum, but it didn't work for me at all. You're supposed to bite it twice and then "park" the gum in your cheek, but I just chewed it like regular chewing gum and got the worst nicotine headache you could imagine.
Oh, no! I tried the patch once and ripped it off in two hours. It aggravated the heck out of me. The Chantix has been gold.
I have been quit for 1 Week, 12 hours, 19 minutes and 15 seconds (7 days). I have saved $13.52 by not smoking 90 cigarettes. I have saved 7 hours and 30 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 5/18/2009 12:00 AM

"The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" book by Alan Carr (yes, title is an oxymoron) REALLY helped mentally prepare me. Hypnotism helped a bit also but wasn't the wonder-cure I'd hoped for, may try it again. Chantix is a must!
Today is day 16 for me, after 30 years of consistant smoking.
Started taking Chantix & cutting down while in New Orleans, & out of my everyday routine. Came home & got sick, that did it! Being sick had me down to 4 or 5 cigs a day, so I was halfway there & quit a week before my target date.
That nasty cold was the best thing that could have happened to me.
Congrats to all who have accomplished it, luck & support to all who are attempting.

Monica, congrats on your 1 week anniversary!!!
It's hard, I know, but it's SO worth it in the end. To use your meter's language, I have been quit for two and a half years. It took me a long time to not miss smoking, but now I never think about it and cannot imagine smoking a cigarette - yuck! When I'm in a smoky bar or around people who are smoking, I always realize how happy I am not to be doing that anymore!
Good luck to everyone trying to quit :)

That's exactly what it takes imo. You've got to reach the point where you are sick and tired of being "owned" by it. When you do, you will know that you are never going back. All these methods are fine if they make you better able to deal with the craving (for me it was more like breaking the synapse that had developed for having one in my hand and my mouth; that was stronger than the drug imo). But mostly I agree with those who simply knew it was finally the end on the day that they quit for good. I don't mean to over-simplify it, but it really is a matter of putting your foot down and saying "no more." And when you get to that point I think cold turkey works as well as anything else. What it comes down to is deciding whether you are bigger than it, or it is bigger than you.

That's what the Freedom From Smoking (FFS) program is . . . cold turkey. Otherwise you're just going thru withdrawal continually.

Yahooo! This just gives me hope. You should be very proud of yourself, HB. :)
thank you:)
to echo some of the other sentiments, it really does have to be the right time and place in one's life to effectively quit and remain cig-free. for me it was just being sick of it and at that time (mid-90s) cigs were going up in price in NY seemingly every other month, it was getting out of hand. so in mid march a friend and i decided to give ourselves until june to smoke ourselves silly and hope that in turn it would make us ready to quit on the 1st. just the first step of the mind trick that is quitting. when the 1st came, i stopped and never looked back (can't say the same for my friend). going out to bars was tough at first, used to chew on the mini drink straws like it was my job but realized that it was really the hand-to-mouth thing, something to do, that i seemed to miss - not the nicotine.
anyway, i never try to get preachy about it but hope that, for others, hearing a little success story helps them along the way. off to a good start in this thread! good luck, pokerchick and to all trying to kick the habit! :)

Continued Congratulations and hugs to you Monica. You will be successful in this endeavor.
Like many others who have posted I "have been quit" smoking for a long time. (over 20 years). I went to a free program offered by the American Cancer Society. I quit cold turkey with support from our small group and my wonderful husband. It wasn't easy to break the addiction but it was absolutely worth it.
There are a lot of Threadheads who smoke cigarettes and maybe you will inspire some of them to take the leap for themselves and commit to quitting.:) This "bored" is a tremendous source of love and support.

Except for a couple of puffs during Santana 2 years ago it's been about 3 years now. Yeah, I occasionaly get the craving and man is it tough. Of course I can't run to the corner store so it helps to beat it back.
Keep up the good work, we are all here for you when you need a shoulder to lean on.

Listen, this is for encouragement. It can be done. I quit smoking on March 31 after 20 years of smoking. I haven't even had a drag. I've drank, made it through Jazz Fest, etc, etc. I want you to know, seriously, if I can do it--ANYBODY can. I did use nicorette for the first week, but, I even quit the gum after a week. It still freaks me out, but, I don't smoke anymore. I take it ONE day at a time, but, it really can be done. I'm not really the type of person that has this discipline and practicing mind over matter, but, I'm doing it. I also have seen quite a few relatives die from emphysema and I don't want to take that route. It's not worth it. BTW--I just turned 41 on May 2. Please believe me--you CAN do it. I have and it is one day at a time. GOOD LUCK!!! It is possible. I'm living proof! Do it!! Quit!!

Do it!! Quit!!
Great encouragement and kudos on quitting yourself! That is FANTASTIC! There have been so many people quitting lately. Two of my friends from high school were both quitting about the same time when I joined Facebook. They have both been an inspiration to me.
Congrats on quitting, MidCity, you're doing a great job! :)

That's pretty much where Ed and I are at.....we're talking about quitting...not quite there yet but it's coming....so envious of all you quitters and Monica...I'm SO PROUD of you!!!!
Thank you, beautiful!
Good, I'm glad you're at least thinking about it. It's HARD to mentally prepare for it, at least it is for me. You and Ed will have a better chance if you do it together, too. A friend of mine and her husband did it about three months ago and he took Chantix and she took Wellbutrin and they are both still quit. I've had the Wellbutrin before and it did nothing for me but the Chantix has been working like a charm.
Let me know if you do it Lisa and I will be your biggest cheerleader! :D

i know several people that have used Auriculotherapy and have been successful in stopping. like other options, you still must want to quit and stick to your decision not to smoke.

Congrats to Monica and the other new non-smokers in our midst.
You have touched a nerve for many folks here- even if our "addiction"
is something else- too much to drink, spending too much at the mall,
gambling too much, staying involved with a toxic person.
The confidence to succeed could be catching!! The love and non-judgemental support from all Threadheads is a mighty force. Thank you.

The quitting train is chugging along. I am so excited ! I saw my dr. today and he said the med that conflicts with Chantix is one I no longer have to take. He wrote me a script for Chantix. I have also scheduled an appointment to have my teeth cleaned the morning of my quit day June 15. I am on module 3 now. I AM QUITTING!!!! YIPEE. Thank you again for the inspiration! lmao, I'm so excited for you! That is freaking AWESOME that you get to take the Chantix. You will be SO THANKFUL that you can. It helps lessen the discomfort of withdrawal GREATLY. Don't forget, those first three days are the hardest. Just get yourself through those and it will be immensely easier on the fourth day. After that it gets better and better. You can do this! Great work on the Modules, too. Make sure you check your old posts for responses; you'd be surprised at some of them. ;)

You know what, Vicki? Life just FEELS better. Today I took my daughter swimming and this was the first time laid out by the pool without cigarettes. It went well! I was so surprised because right after I get situated and open my book to read, I always used to light a cigarette. I was kind of scared to go swimming because I was worried about how I would do. But when I actually got to the pool, it was a piece of cake. To tell the truth, I hardly thought about them! It was so nice being able to enjoy my afternoon without having to have cigarettes. Got in 15 laps, too. We had a great time! :D
Thanks for your continuing encouragement. It has been a big help. :)

Congratulations! I am totally convinced that there is no more addictive substance than nicotine. It's the toughest of all things to quit and you are doing fabulous! And publicizing it takes some guts, IMHO. So keep it up, you have proven you can get throught the worst of it....but as you know, there is still a battle to fight.
Took me about 10 years of trying to get beyond one month, but it's been 14 years since I left my own 22 year two-pack-or-more-a-day addiction behind.

kEEP IT UP EVERYONE!!!! I haven't had a smoke in 3 years and there are days when I still want one. The one thing that really helps keep me from taking that one smoke is ,I remind myself how hard it was to quit and if I have just that one smoke I will be right back at the begining. Ask youself do you want to go through all that hard work again. Because you know you will have to quit again.
By the way I smoked for 37 years before I quit and I was up to 2 packs a day at the end.
YOU CAN DO IT!

True story, why would I subject myself to this again??? Biggest reason I haven't smoked in 3 months.
Dumb pride has finally found a useful place also: another reason I haven't faltered is that I don't want to have to admit failure.
Thanks for all the encouragement, it truly helps!

is out of the county the same as out of the country?
in 1993 i quit (cold turkey) for 3+ months, then had a few on the trip down to jazz fest (stayed with friends in MS). first weekend i 'bummed a smoke' frequently, second weekend i broke down and bought cigs and paid back my enablers. its really difficult to not smoke in NOLA - but the more people who do not smoke, the easier it will be.
my ramblings on smoker cheatin':
first you should know that i am a 'social smoker'. i smoke when i drink (lets not go into how much i drink). i used to smoke all the time, somehow got out of that habit without really trying. now i might go weeks without a cig (i rarely smoke when i drink at home), but there are certain social situations that make me crave a menthol cig beyond distraction. during fest, i end up smoking 4-6 packs for the 11 days. so i am not 'without sin', i aint preachin'.
i have a good friend who tried to be a weekend smoker like me. she would quit smoking, then after a while decide she would just smoke on saturday night or at festivals (like me). this didnt work, she ended up smoking on mondays. she finally said NO MORE, she has been smoke free for several years now. some people can't cheat.
i have another friend who quit after being a casual everyday smoker since college. now, every year she smokes a half pack at the mardi gras ball. she has no problem returning to her non smoking status. but she's a working mom who doesnt go out alot, and therefore does not have a lot of temptation. some people can cheat.
i have another friend who quit after being a committed smoker. she had to avoid the bar scene for the first 3 months. she had to work at not smoking very hard. she has never had a puff since she stopped - due to fear she would start smoking again. some people dont even want to risk the cheat.
you have to decide what type of a recovered smoker you are. everyone's habit is different. everyone's recovery is different.
everyday you dont smoke is a healthier day.
ozzie
09-16-2009, 06:22 AM
Thanks Barb... my friend is a one or two a day smoker and it drives me nuts. Not sure what sort of non-smoker I'll be, but doubt I'd ever be that strong. Will see how it all plays out... but happy to say I'm not craving any more than I was before I broke down. Not craving any less of course but think I'm back on track. Cheers!

Dana, that is what I did, too. A few years ago, I decided to stop smoking in my house and it cut me down to half a pack. I stayed with that for a few years (it IS a significant drop and a big help!) and it is definitely a step in the right direction towards quitting. I do believe it made quitting much easier for me this time. Keep going, girl! :)

Well, here's my story...
I decided to take a solid shot at quitting, and I went to my doctor to get a prescription for "Champix", Phizer Canada's equivalent of "Chantix". I started it two weeks ago...and I stopped taking it last Friday.
I found that the drug really gave me some bizarre nightmares, and since I'm currently undergoing a sleep study and dealing with severe hypertension, this definitely wasn't helpful. I also found that I had some serious difficulties concentrating last week, and shortly after I stopped taking it, my concentration completely returned. I never much cared for the idea of taking a pill that messes with my brain, since my brain (all things considered) is relatively ok!
Most importantly, I realized that my problem is more about the HABIT than the addiction, and that I need to do something that is more "interactive" than popping a pill twice a day. I'm now gearing up to go back on the patch because that previously worked very well for me. There's something about having that tangible reminder glued to your body that keeps me focused on the task at hand, and it (hopefully) will keep me on track in terms of dealing with the cravings and available alternatives - sunflower seeds, gum, candies, etc.
I'm now setting a new quit date, and I'll keep everyone posted....

Good luck Ross and Denise. YOU CAN DO IT! I quit over 3 years ago it wasn't easy but glad I did it. The only thing that reallllly ticked me off was, I felt that because I was doing something healthy for myself I thought I should at least get some kinda physical atta girl like losing 10 ponds instead of gaining weight.

Congratulations Monica! That is awesome. Ozzie- You CAN do this PERMANENTLY. You did so well for so long, you can make it last. Dana, Ross, and everyone else who wants to quit- there is lots of free help out there. Most cancer societies and many major medical centers offer free quit assistance. There is no right or wrong way to quit. Quitting is HARD!
For me it was one of the more difficult things I did. I went to a free program at the American Cancer Society that was a group support system. (I liked being able to complain about it with others :p ). I agree with Ross- the physical addiction part, while miserable, really is over pretty quick, it's the habit that is hard to break. I still advocate drink straws, cinnamon sticks, anything you can draw on to pretend you are inhaling and keep your hands busy. Then you have to realize that unfortunately for most smokers it is an addiction and it's not OK to just have 1 or 2 when you're out drinking or within the week you are back to smoking again. (like most of us, I tried to quit many times before I succeeded).
Sorry for the long post. I hope it is not preachy, it is only my intent to be supportive of everyone trying to quit. You will look better, feel better, smell better and have lots more money to spend on fun stuff like music and Jazz Fest! Good luck to all of you. You have my support!

I'm now setting a new quit date, and I'll keep everyone posted....
Ross, Chantix/Champix is not for everybody. I was scared of some of those same things that you mentioned but fortunately, I didn't experience any serious side effects. I think I had one vivid dream the first night but I dream vividly anyway so I don't even know if it was the Chantix or not. I got nauseous maybe once or twice but only because I didn't eat first and drink 8 oz. of water before I took the pill. Other than that, I was okay and was able to wean myself off of it pretty quickly cuz I really don't like to stay dependant on any drug, especially one that messes with your brain. So far I've been very lucky and have stayed quit this time. It took me several tries before I was able to finally quit, too, but just keep on trying no matter what. One day, one of them will actually stick. And let me tell you, it feels SO GOOD to be on this side of quitting. There is life after quitting smoking and when you get there, you're gonna wonder why it took you so long to do it. I'm sure I could easily pick one up right now and smoke it but there ain't no way I'm going through all that again. I'm DONE.
Good luck to you, Ross! :)

This month is my 3 Year Anniversary of quitting smoking (not sure of the exact date, I just know that I was finally done sometime before xmas). Anyway, I was thinking about that today and that led to thinking about this thread. Just want to take a moment to congratulate Pokerchick and everyone who quit in 2009 and before.
Those of you thinking about it... DO IT!!!! Yes, it is hell for awhile, but it will pass, and when that's over you will be SO HAPPY!!!! The New Year is right around the corner. Now I'm not one for making resolutions, but if you are..... just sayin' :)
Congrats to all the '09 Quitters!!!

Yesterday was my 7 month anniversary of quitting!! Question for fellow quitters: what the hell do I do with this enormous gut? Did y'all put on weight too?
Thanks again for all the support I found here.

OMG Sharon, that is awesome! I am very proud of you. It's no easy task to quit, hardest thing I've ever done. I think I hit my seven month anniversary on the 18th of this month. You go, girl! :D
And to anyone else considering quitting . . . do it! It feels so good to be on this side of it. There is life after smoking. :)
