Hey Now--- If you have a few free moments this evening, why not throw on one of your favorite Bob Dylan albums, in honor of his 68th birthday today.
Dylan, one of the world's greatest wordsmiths, on a par with Shakespeare, Twain, Faulkner and Hemmingway, continues to craft some of the most evocative, lyrical songs ever written, all while continuing to tour on a regular basis.
He also has a great love for the rich history and musical legacy of New Orleans, a city which inspired several of his finest pieces, including "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Highway 61".
Happy Birthday Bob Dylan..........."May You Stay Forever Young"...........

may he live to 98
He was so much older then. He's younger than that now.
We had the lyrics to "Forever Young" read as one of the readings at our wedding.
Favorite Bob Dylan albums? Where to begin? Blonde on Blonde is always an obvious choice for me because of the number of tunes and overall quality. Same logic applies to a lesser extent to The Basement Tapes. Blood on the Tracks and Desire have always been favorites thematically. Biograph and Tell Tale Signs are special for all the unreleased gems (and it always blows my mind that nuggets like those could have remained on the cutting room floor). New Morning is probably my dark horse favorite.
Probably only twenty more that I would put in my top ten...
I hope he lives to a ripe old age, as he has proven himself to be capable of producing relevant, great art at an astonishing rate throughout some five decades. Whenever it does happen, I believe that his death will mark indelibly the end of an era, the likes of which the world has not acknowledged since Elvis died.
And for the record, I'm not comparing the two as artists. I don't think Elvis comes close to Dylan, but the magnitude of Elvis's death was indicative of his place as an icon for an entire generation. Because of Dylan's longevity and how prolific he has been, I think that Dylan will be recognized with similar reverence across more than a few generations.

The first time I saw Bob was Jan 1976. I drove from Jackson, MS to Houston for the Rolling Thunder Review. Bob came out wearing white-face make-up. (I told my friend "He is DEFINTLEY fucking with me!!!!!") The concert was a benefit for Rubin (Hurricane) Carter. The players included Joan Baez (WITH BOB!!! for the first time, for me, since the 60s), EmmyLou Harris and Roger McGuinn. It was an amazing, drug-fueled concert, one of the best concerts I've ever seen. I will see Bob again, with Willie, July 31, 2009. 33 years later. That seems unreal.....
Happy Birthday, boo!

"On the Road" with Larry Ratso Sloman is a great read (almost like reading Almost Famous, a story of the entire tour).
Thinking more about the Desire-era, I recall reading or hearing that Jerry's favorite Dylan tune was "Joey." I've always loved that tune too, and I always get a chuckle at one of my favorite lines:
What time is it?" said the judge to Joey when they met
"Five to ten," said Joey. The judge says, "That's exactly what you get."

HOLY CRAP!!!! Thank you so much for that!!!
Ibjamn's word to the wise: If you are not a Bob Dylan fan, say born after 1980. Do yourself a favor. Go see him while we still have him. He is the poet laureate for "our" generation.

1964.... Freshmen year at small college in North Carolina...struggling to make any grades at all, 18 hour quarters...Thursday night cramming for Friday exams for all three five hour core subjects....dorm-mate comes in and says Dylan and Baez are playing at N.C State in Raleigh, am I in? Some opportunities are more important than others...of course I'm in!!
p.s. failed all three tests and courses. In retrospect those tests/courses would not and have not made one bit of difference in my life....seeing Bob did.

I always loved Jerry's versions of Senor. As for Joey, I got to see the Dead and Dylan do that song at Sullivan Stadium on July 4th back in 1987. It was very powerful.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Zimmerman..you are truly a groundbreaking musician and I hope you continue to perform for several years to come.

I loved all of Jerry's versions of Dylan tunes. I especially loved his version of "When I Paint My Masterpiece"--so much better than the Dead versions with Bobby on lead. Also really loved seeing Jerry do "Tough Mama."

If your talking about the concert at the Astrodome I was there also.
Small world. yyr "drug-fueled concert". I really don't remember much
about that concert. I was thinking that Ringo Starr played also.
