Prarie flowers and weeds are indigenous to the central United States, not lawn grass.I don't want weed killing chemicals sprayed on the lawn on my carbon footprint, but I do get dirty looks from some of the neighbors as they pass by.

We live on an old pasture but if ya keep it mowed,,,it looks mighty fine! Lots of dandylions here and love em too.

I say let em grow!
But if you think you're getting dirty looks now, wait till they get to this stage:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/varshh306/dandelions.png
and spread thier fairy dust ( seeds) all over your neighbors lawns. :D

I'm with you, Johnny. Our front yard is kept mowed (for appearance sake, to keep on good terms with the neighbors, yadda yadda). But the back yard grows wild.
Some of our neighbors have fully organic, indigenous yards, and I think it's beautiful.

True dat.
My particular gripe is watering lawns. I have to pay a neighbor to water my lawn here in Denver when I spend the summer back East with my aging Mom. They call it "Kentucky Bluegrass" for a reason; the High Plains are meant to support sagebrush & yucca plants. My Mom has been in her house in Connecticut for over 40 years & has NEVER watered the lawn.
What a waste....

Gotta love Wiki:
In modern French the plant is named pissenlit, which means "piss in bed", apparently referring to its diuretic properties[citation needed].
Likewise, "pissabeds" is an English folk-name for this plant, as is piscialletto in Italian and the Spanish meacamas.
In various north-eastern Italian dialects the plant is known as pisacan ("dog pisses"), referring to how common they are found at the side of pavements[citation needed], while in many other northern Italian dialects it is known as soffione ("blowing") referring to the blowing the seeds from the stalk.
The same is true for German, where Pusteblume ("blowing flower") is a popular designation. Likewise, in Polish it is called "dmuchawiec", deriving from dmuchać ("to blow").
Whilst in its flowering form the Poles know it as Mlecz, a word derived from "milk", due to the plant's milky sap.

I do have to say that we have a problem here with a weed called False Chamomile. It's actually a pretty weed as it looks just like a Daisy but it is over taking our native plants at an alarming rate. So sometimes, these weeds need to be chemically destroyed as they are too widespread to even attempt to manually pull them

Oh yea, how about Canadian thistle? brutal...
But it all depends on whether you want a showcase lawn.
Did you know that the front lawn mania in America started when Andrew Carnegie introduced golf from his native Scotland?
Sagebrush.. SI!

That's funny because the county has actually rented a herd of goats the past couple of summers to eat what they could and it was a lot. You could hear the little buggers farting while they were chomping away

Dandelions make me hungry...when they are still young, at least.
We used to fill shopping bags with them in the spring from nearby fields. And then either my mother or grandmother would parboil them to get the bitterness out, squeeze the greens dry and then saute in olive oil or butter...always adding a whipped egg or two and fresh grated pecorino. Sort of like a spinach frittata but a little wilder. A great treat right off the school bus. Probably 30 years since I last had them....but back then....every spring just could not happen without a week or so of dandelions every day or so. Along with mustard greens and young stalks of burdock (The american version of Cardone) each foraged vegetable had a short season that I looked forward to every year.

Thanks Belle, but they have to picked at the right time to be less bitter...before any bud at all has formed. That time probably passed where you are located and is getting close here..(.although I've haven't checked and the seasons have moved "in" about two weeks in the spring since I was a kid cause of global warming) Then comes mucho washing, parboiling etc.
Besides, we will have plenty to prepare for CFF....when we will meet again.....probably toasting each other next week right about now? Sambucca? A nice white Bordeaux? Something carbonated perhaps?

I SO hope you do, darlin'! I've decided I need to have someone here review my resume, as it seems good for Cali - but not so much for here . . . sigh. :(
Maybe that will help get me hooked up for some sort of gainful employment in New Orleans . . .
