We've all been to one spot on the list. How many others have you seen? I've seen them all except Niagara Falls - as close as I've been is Rochester (not really that close).
Graceland to The Grand Canyon: 8 U.S. Tourist Spots That Deserve a Chance
By Janis Turk
May 21, 2009
Seasoned travelers scoff at places where tourists often tread, but such snobby adventurers just might be missing out on the fun. It's a strange place on an unpublished map -- the lines that crisscross what is "camp" and what is "cool" in these road-much-traveled "touristy" destinations. Travel, like life, can be theatrical, kitschy, and beautifully full of surprises. So next time you think it's un-cool to take in a "tourist trap," consider this: Would these places so popular and so enduring, if they weren't somehow, on some level, so much fun?
So here are some truly touristy things you really should do, without shame or apology, before you get too cool or too jaded to "get them" anymore.
1. Graceland Mansion, Memphis: Elvis hasn't entirely left the building in this, his weird old mansion -- he's actually buried in the backyard by the pool. And with the famous "Jungle Room," Graceland is so weird it's actually wonderful.
2. The Grand Old Opry stage at The Ryman Theatre in Nashville. Stand on the spot where Hank Williams stood and Johnny Cash walked the line. Even if you aren't a country music fan, it's a thrill to be in Nashville.
3. The Empire State Building: For an Affair to Remember, take the elevator to the top -- the view is spectacular. Everyone should see New York this way at least once. And while you're at it, head to Times Square. Tourists go there, sure, but there's a reason so many do.
4. Bourbon Street. It's like a bad boyfriend: It's decadent, loud, stays up too late, and it's full of bawdy beer fun, Karaoke bars, Hurricane drinks, and plastic beads. And, like any true bad boy, it's got its own irresistible charm.
5. Niagara Falls. Take the Maid of the Mist boat ride under the falls. It's mind-blowing.
6. Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood. Kick your feet up in Hollywood and stand in the footprints of the legends -- both major and minor (very minor, sometimes) -- of the silver screen.
7. The Las Vegas Strip. It's Disneyland for adults. Try your luck there at least once.
8. The Grand Canyon: There's more to this than just a huge hole in the ground. Take a helicopter ride over the Canyon's edge or ride a mule train down to canyon floor. Now that's a cool family vacation.

The strip is the only one I haven't been to yet...not sure I will do that one either.
The kids haven't been to several of them..more vacations needed;)

Not sure I understand the point of this list. "Here are the places that every tourist goes to and you should go, too, because every tourist goes there."
I mean, they've picked just about the least interesting places in each one of those areas. To me, Fremont Street is more interesting than the strip, there are tons of canyons more enjoyable than the Grand Canyon (Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon immediately come to mind), and don't even get me started on the multitude of idiots taking pictures of the McDonald's in Times Square. If you want views of the city, I'd suggest Top of the Rock over the Empire State Building. It's a much better setup, IMO.
And should we even begin to consider Bourbon Street over everything New Orleans has to offer?

I've been to all of them. My favorite had to be Nashville. Here is pic of me with Roy Acuff backstage at the Ryman Theater. (Too bad the Grand Ole Opry isn't there anymore... :()

I can offer alternatives.
1. Graceland Mansion, Memphis-Go to Sun Studios instead and sing in to the same mic that Elvis, Carl, Jerry Lee, Johnny, and Howlin' Wolf used.
2. The Grand Old Opry stage at The Ryman Theatre in Nashville-The Ryman is cool but so is Gibson's Pickin' Parlor, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, and Ernest Tubb's Record Store.
3. The Empire State Building- McSorely's Ale House in the East village.
4. Bourbon Street-Frenchman Street
6. Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood-I don't get this one at all. If I'm in LA, I'm checking out the Itty Bitty Titty Clubs looking for that Anat chick.
7. The Las Vegas Strip-The Strip is visually stimulating if you're on peyote buttons. I prefer Fremont street as mentioned in the earlier post
8. The Grand Canyon-Copper Canyon in Mexico. For an idea of what this is like please watch the train robbery scene from Treasure of Sierra Madre. Much more exciting than riding a mule.
And jamn: I believe that's Roy Acuff you're posing with.
I'm not sure I understand al the hostility. Maybe that's what the author was trying to talk about. But some of these are certainly worth a visit. Especially the urban ones, if you happen to already be in the city.
Like many here, I've grown tired of the Bourbon St scene (or maybe I'm just too old). But if I were bringing a first-time visitor to NOLA, yes, I'd spend a half hour walking down Bourbon, just so they could see what it's all about. Ditto Times Square - you can't go to NYC and not see it; but no, I won't stand in line to get into TGI Fridays there. (I do agree with Top of the Rock over the ESB, though).
And whatever you think of the touristy development around it, there's only one Niagara Falls.
I have no problem with the list. I guess to me part of the fun of travel is going to all the touristy places and experiencing all their cheesiness. I loved Niagara Fall. Of course as several have mentioned, if you get off the beaten path you may discovery a treasure.

Well, sadly, the only one of the published list OR the suggested alternatives has been Bourbon-Frenchman. I need to get out more.

Been to all except Niagra, Graceland, & Opry. I really do want to get to Memphis for BOTH Graceland and the other sites mentioned. Niagra, Opry, well I guess there are a few other places on my wish list ahead of those.
I LOVE the Empire State. Not for the view, but for the architecture & history. Come to think of it, I love the Chrysler building much more. Grauman's Chinese is fun & silly, certainly not the highlight of So Cal. But I actually have a strong dislike for Vegas, especially the strip. But i found some wonderful state parks with red rock canyons and fascinating petroglyphs nearby. Oh, and the Grand Canyon -- yea, that's pretty spectacular.

I'm happy to say I've been to 8 out of the 10! The only ones I haven't done are the ESB and Niagara Falls. Graceland . . . it is what it is and I'm glad I got to do it; it's a part of Americana. I STILL love Bourbon Street and much more I love the whole French Quarter. Loved the Grand Canyon, the Grand Ole Opry and Vegas was a BLAST!
I'd love to do New York one year between Christmas and New Year's. And the Maid of the Mist definitely sounds intriguing. I love having my mind blown. :D
I have been quit for 4 Days, 9 hours, 20 minutes and 43 seconds (4 days). I have saved $7.90 by not smoking 52 cigarettes. I have saved 4 hours and 20 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 5/18/2009 12:00 AM

Niagara Falls is OK to look at, but like they say, Maid of the Mist is absolutely amazing...... at the bottom of the Falls all you can see looking up is rainbows.... VERY psychedelic!
Sun Studios is also a must; same acoustic tiles on ceiling from back in the day, vibes are INTENSE.
Stax Studios also worth the time... I was taking notes of all the stuff on the walls. Also has a lil dance floor with endless loop of Soul Train dancer clips... too much fun!

Fremont Street over the Strip? I have to disagree there (unless you like the run down falling apart old casinos and that silly light show) ;) Just my personal opinion! We watched some of the WSOP finals a number of years back when they were at a casino downtown, can't remember which one.

Thank you! Yes, it is very hard, especially the first three days. It's getting better all the time, though. This is the combination of why I think this has been successful for me thus far:
Chantix (that stuff really works good!)
The Freedom From Smoking/American Lung Association website (they mentally prepare you three weeks before and leading up to your quit and after and give you assignments to do every day. Plus, there's a forum there with people who are quitting just like you and they always respond to your posts).
Support from my friends here and at FB (this is huge and means so much)
Prayer and other people praying for me.
My determination. :D

I've been to the new Opry, but not the Ryman - and I haven't been to the Grand Canyon (flown over it though).
However, I've been to all of the others listed and I agree that they deserve a chance (which was the title of the list - not "These are the ONLY places in these cities you should see"). Perhaps they draw visitors in and then that encourages them to see more of the excellent cities in which these are located . . .

After you've tired of the major tourist spots, it's always fun to check out this one: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/ for unusual destinations, especially if you are roadtripping. :)

Most people prefer Canadian side. Just looking at it was good, but left something missing.... Maid of the Mist is an absolute must... very satisfying.
Walking over the Rainbow Bridge to Canada got me all choked up; being a Vietnam era guy I couldn't help thinking about all those guys crossing the bridge to avoid Nam, not knowing if they'd ever come back to the good ole USA... plus you can get some good maple syrup (& ganja seeds??)... plus the crowd on the Canadian side is amazingly international.... people from ALL over...

Well, as someone who lives a couple of hours from Niagara Falls, I wouldn't give you 2 cents for it. I always laugh when people say that it's the "Honeymoon Capital of the World" because it's filled with tourist traps like Ripley's Believe it or Not, theme parks, etc. Maybe if your bride was 13 years old she MIGHT find it romantic, but then again, she would probably find some P Diddy song "romantic.... :>)
I took my Mom to Niagara Falls a few years ago, and when we got there, we stared at the Falls. And we stared. And we stared. She looked at me and asked "now what?", and I replied: "Well, we can go down to the water and look at the falls from a boat. Or we can go behind the falls and look at them from that angle. Or we can go up in that tower and look at them from up there. Or... we can get in the car, drive 15 minutes to Niagara-On-The-Lake and work our way around twenty different wineries."
Guess which one WE chose?

Nah, they don't have the WSOP in the big strip hotels unless they have a big conference area (I know they've had some rounds at the Mandalay Bay and the Rio (off strip)).
My fave strip hotel now is officially the Wynn. I haven't yet checked out the Encore, but hear it's even nicer.

Once upon a time, I lived across the street from Elvis Presley. This was before Graceland, and even before Elvis Presley Blvd. - it was called Bellevue then. There was a strip mall across the street, and an apartment complex behind the strip mall, where I lived.
One Halloween, I took my daughter to Elvis's house for trick-or-treat. She got a candied apple on a stick (from the gate guard, not Elvis).

I thought this would be a fun kick off to Summer (thanks to those of you who got it).
It seemed to me the point was we think of these places as cheesy but they do have merit. We poo-pooed Graceland but figured, what the hell. It was really, really unexpected fun - we even signed the wall.
Happy Summer everyone! (okay, I know it's not technically summer yet .....)

They have many gardens and a butterfly conservatory that was amazing. We never did the theme parks, ripleys, etc but we had a ball for two days.
It was also Thanksgiving and we didnt have no turkey but drove through a spectacular light show. Just sayin... and stayed in the tallest hotel on the top floor with a balcony that the kids loved sleeping on.

Vegas doesn't thrill me as it once did. The strip now feels like it is on a freeway filled with SUVs. All with the background of an evil Disneyworld. Although as a true geek, I love the fact that someone can get married on the bridge of the Enterprise dressed as Klingons...not me mind you. The Star Trek rides are cool.
Must disagree with Ross, Niagara Falls still takes my breath every time I visit (which is usually when someone who has never been there comes to visit....) Maid of the Mist is spectacular and the recently opened elevator to the observation deck on the bottom of the Horseshoe falls on the Canadian side is a worthy substitute if being on a bouncing boat in the wake of the falls doesn't sit right with you.
Top of Rock is very nice. Line sure is shorter. But with the twin towers gone, walking outside at midnight at the Empire State Building is still the View to Remember. Times Square must be seen.. we all need a walk acrosss the Brooklyn Bridge...but also must sees are the Rose Center at the AMNH and MOMA and the incomparable Metropolitan Museum...no equal on this continent..except maybe the Art Institute...another favorite..and swaying on the Sears Towers is "up" there as well.

You know that I love ya...how can you not love the power of the water..its like gazing at the ocean (which I can do for days) pondering the vastness. No City like NYC..I love it there. So do the kids cause it is so different from living where we are. We love to have pictures taken with wall streets bull balls, go to Times square, point to our navels and know we are at the center of the universe, the Metropolitian Museum....get lost for days there.

Ah, what can I say? I have the attention span of a gnat (not ANAT), so falling water only works for me for so long.
I had pretty much the same experience at the Grand Canyon. My sisters convinced to me to get up at 5 am to stare at a freezing canyon while the sun came up, and as breathtaking as it was, all I could say (before heading back to the car for a nap) was "Gee, nice hole."
If you or Belle are ever up Niagara way again, take the short trip up the road to Niagara on the Lake - it's WAY cooler, and wine tasting never gets boring!

Born in New York, lived there 16 years, have never walked across the Brooklyn Bridge.... a definite "thing to do"
Nor have I been to the top of Statue of Liberty, but I think thats pretty common.
Just about 2 weeks ago got to fly over Grand Canyon on my way to Gator by the Bay fest in San Diego... nice
But the lack of H2O is scary, another reason I don't approve of watering lawns... Colorado River is just a little "crick" that doesn't even reach Pacific Ocean any more... Susqehanna (sp?) and even Housatonic rivers dwarf it..

I love Niagara-on-The-Lake and as an Eiswein devotee from some time ago, Inniskillin is a favorite. While the Shaw festival is closer and excellent, my heart is always ready to make the longer trip to Stratford. The Shakespeare is top-notch, the other productions are always top-flight, and while not the same as the real Stratford-on-Avon....the Canadian Festival town (pretty much in the middle of nowhere) has always turned a weekend there for us into a real vacation.

The river that makes all others in the Northern Hemisphere look like a crick is the Mighty St Lawrence. Nine miles wide at the Lake Ontario end, with 1800 islands and twice as many shoals, you need an expert pilot to see the river the way it deserves.
On the life list as well, should be a train ride over the Rockies from Denver to San Fran on the route of the Zephyr. Many a spectacular mile where no roads exist in canyons and mountains, cliff side..winding through areas like the Donner Pass. It's hard to leave the sight-seeing car on that trip.

The Southwest Chief through the mountains ain't bad either.

I made that trip with my grandfather the summer between soph and jr year in high school. I can still remember it vividly. Not sure I did leave the sight-seeing car. At one point, coming out of a tunnel, the cliff walls looked about 6 inches from the windows and a sheer drop on the other side. It was like being suspended in mid-air, going 80 mph.

I've always found that bridge over the Ponchartrain to be pretty fascinating. I was on it in a Greyhound bus, and when I woke up, it was like taking a bridge across the ocean: no shore visible from any side. I thought it was pretty surreal...until I actually entered New Orleans. Now THAT was surreal!

We always take one walk down Bourbon St. each trip to New Orleans and I always have the lyric from an Anders Osborne song running through my head. It goes something like “I even miss the moral waste down on Bourbon St.” Plus we need to go to Fritzels (for traditional jazz) and The Funky Pirate too (for Big Al).

We've all been to one spot on the list. How many others have you seen? I've seen them all except Niagara Falls - as close as I've been is Rochester (not really that close).
I have made it to 4 out the 8 so far. Haven't made Grand Canyon but did make it to Wiamea (sp?) canyon in Kauai, breath taking.
I want to go on record as loving ESB, especially if you go up after midnight, there is hardly anyone around and the night view is spectacular.
so much to do, so little time.

Wiamea is awesome! I saw both by car, helicopter, and a bit of hiking. Kauai is gorgeous. ESB was cool, but didn't do it at night. Statue of Liberty is so tiny from up there...

1. Graceland Mansion, Memphis: Just visited Memphis a month ago but opted to skip this one...Didnt think the kids would be into it & not a die hard Elvis fan...pricey too...the locals told us its not worth it unless your a BIG elvis fan?
2. The Grand Old Opry stage at The Ryman Theatre in Nashville. Not a Country Fan either? I think that would have helped a lot. There was a statue of Minnie Pearl inside the museum... My wife had to tell me who she was?
Enjoyed the Honky Tonk bars (Tootsie's...ect...) much better!
3. The Empire State Building: A must if your in NY! Have been on top a number of times. Breathtaking. My favorite thing to do was stand by the elevator and watch and listen to the peoples expressions when the doors opened! Never been to the top of the rock, just the big 2.... WTC and ESB... I always thought the view from the ESB was much better than WTC. Will probably try the Top Of The Rock some day...Even though King Kong never climbed Rockefeller Center!;)
4. Bourbon Street: I love it, my wife hates it. enough said.
5. Niagara Falls: I Love Niagara Falls, Also a must if your near it, My annual pilgrimage to a folk fest in Ontario usually includes a stop there. Maid of the mist... YES! Journey behind the falls...YES! Cave of the winds...YES! The whirlpool... YES! Clifton Hill....Take it or leave it!
6. Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood: Handprints, footprints, some movie props & people running around in costume looking for money to take your picture with them.... Whoop dee doo.
7. The Las Vegas Strip: Enjoy it! Did Las Vegas with the kids last year they loved it too! Want a hint for a great view...Drive to the top of the Treasure Island parking deck...free!... Then go down to the free pirate show...A Family Friendly STRIPPER SHOW! Woohooo!
8. The Grand Canyon: WOW! Ummmm. WOW!

We plan on taking the Zephyr to Reno, stay a day or two then Bus or car to San Fran in July , Also plan to see Yosemite for the first time this Trip.
I highly recommend all of those - though Reno is a below bargain basement Vegas, but is better in the summer than in the winter. When you're there, I highly recommend getting an "Awful-Awful Burger" (called that because it's awful big and awful good) at the (Little) Nugget diner (in their casino) on N. Virginia St. (the main drag) in downtown Reno, right across from Harrah's.
I also recommend eating at the Pneumatic Diner on First St., right next to the Truckee River and getting the potato-cheese dish (I can't remember what it's called).
Yosemite is gorgeous also - try to do as many of the waterfalls hikes as you can.
S.F. is a WHOLE other thread, as I've lived there and can't recommend it highly enough! :D

even if you don't get to the grand ole opry itself and even if you do, you should make it a point to visit the Opryland Hotel...it is a beautiful hotel that is like a world of its own....and there is a fountain that has dancing waters...at night they have colored lights on the water...and christmas time at the opryland hotel is unbelievable with all the decorations. it is truly worth spending some time there if you ever make it to nashville.

Oh, I totally think so!
The Awful-Awful has been voted Best Burger in Reno by their weekly alternative paper for several years now and is one of the few things that can get me off my normal non-red meat-eating wagon . . . it is a yumtastic burger and comes with a pound (that's not a joke - an actual 16 ozs.) of delicious fries - it's great for the Carnivore in you!
For the veggie lover in you, the Pneumatic Diner will more than fill the bill - it's an upstairs, small funky joint (over the Truckee River Lodge) on W. First St., but their food is filling, tootin' tasty and good for you to boot! They also have good microbrew options and on Sunday mornings before 11, they have some of the biggest, best waffles this side of the Clover Grill!

The Chrysler Building is my favorite. I used to work down the street and, in the winter, would cut through the lobby to get to the subway station.
Grand Central Station is also spectacular. Jackie O. did an exceptional job bringing it back to it's original splendor. Gotta love a train station with The Oyster Bar in it. I love the look on people's face when you tell them the best Raw Bar/Fish House in town is in the train station!! Never had anyone come back and tell me I was wrong! ;)

Even before they restored, an oyster pan roast was one of my favorite dishes in NYC. Now that the Empire Route Amtrak trains go to Penn Station...it's actually been some years now since the change over, I rarely make to Grand Central. But it is a beaty.
As is the Rose Center...Plus if you like yer star shows to be dramatic...nowhere else compares. A great museum got ever better when this opened in 2000.

Thanks for posting the list. Only ones I've been to are LV Strip, Bourbon Street, and did a drive-by viewing of Graceland. Also flown over the Grand Canyon a few times. For some reason, I never get tired of taking the walk down Bourbon Street, as "the Other One" posted here. I don't even mind the smell, for some strange reason (and I have sharp nosebuds). I'll miss the swinging fishnetted leg of "Big Daddy's". There's some strange stuff I've seen on Bourbon St. that I've never seen anywhere else in this strange world. Maybe Saturn Bar would a good alternative (certainly just as weird, for sure, maybe not so much so, now that Neil has passed on, I haven't been there since). I do get into the "touristy" stuff, the kitschiness/campiness of it all.
Places that I would add - Isle Royale National Park, Michigan (in Lake Superior) guess I'm partial because I've been there so many time. I worked on the boats that go out there for five summers, and never ever got tired of its indescribable beauty. It's the only job I've ever had (except for maybe 1 other- as piano accompanist for the Duluth Ballet) that I wanted to be working on my days off! I think it's the least visited of any of the National Parks, or one of the least visited. So it doesn't really qualify for the "touristy" designation, for sure. In order to get there, you really have to want to go, as it's a long boat ride (or the only other alternative is an expensive seaplane ride).

I think many of the people on this bored ARE jaded about Bourbon Street, but having been a tourist waaaaaay back in the day and having taken several peeps through the last several years there is a childlike wonderment in these places to many people. My company hosts a trade show every year and we rent a balcony on Bourbon for these people. Like my boss says, tourists on Bourbon do not realize it is not Mardi Gras every day. I will do my best to extoll the virtues of other sections of the town to these people for sure, but y'all have to admit this is the cheese that is the bait when initally set. Living in the SW a visit to the grand canyon is a given- i've been there many times and its always inspiring. bourbon st is worth a visit- even now that i've been to nola dozens of times. niagara falls and the maid in the mist is the best on this list-the canada side has the view. it is amazing- worth every bit of publicity it gets and i agree with the previous poster who commented on the international tourism- a lot like the grand canyon there are many people from different areas of the globe there.

Seeing as this year was my first trip (and not the last) to the states I am pleased to sayI have 'kinda' -well not really done a little of the list now....
Bourbon St - well, we had a couple of nights out there on our trip and had a sing at Cats Meow, but must admit even at my age (29) I found it a little too OTT for an every night thing. We spent the majority of our evenings out at The Chart Room, and absolutely loved everything about the place. Lisa and Jeremy our fantabulous bar tenders looked after us (extremely) well. Got my newest ink done down at Electric Ladyland on Frenchmens Street on our second night there, so Frenchmans was the first place we really ventured in NOLA, and glad to say we did actually make it out of the quarter and had a drink in the garden district and loved it.
Opry - well didnt quite go to the theatre, but did go shopping at the Opry Mills Mall - so i am taking that as it kinda counts becaues of the name sake - I wished I had have spent more time, and more money there then I did - was better shopping at Opry Mills then there was in Vegas thats for sure and there was good shopping in Vegas. Hit a cute little Honky Tonk bar (Roberts i think it was called) on our first night in Nashville and got to watch the locals bopping around to the gold ol country tunes the live band was playing - I think that was the highlight for us.
Gracelands - drove up to it - was already closed, took a photo of the sign and took off. We did get to Sun Studios tho, altho we didnt stay for the tour - because we wanted to go see gracelands and the end result - well enough said, but cant live with regrets.
Flew over the Grand Canyon on my way into Vegas.
The Strip - well - I would have enjoyed it there alot more if I wasnt travelling solo by then. Got bored of it quite quickly and by the end of the three days, was absolutely exhausted.
Definitely will be heading back to tick more off on the list tho... Now, to just start the saving process again...

+1 - Key West is definitely a "touristy" place that's also loads of fun. Insanely hot about now, though.
It wasn't my list, but I would have added Key West if I were to make such a compilation.

Totally agree with Michelino about train ride from Denver to SF....excellent! Doesn't follow the highway, lots of scenery & animals. Plus a train ride is fun cause you can go to diner car, bar car, socialize...
Especially if you can afford a sleeper.... sleeping in the chair can hurt....
Someone said they've never been to Noo Yawk.I haven't lived in my birthplace of NYC since 1974, so I've been "re-hicked"... I'm in awe, look up at the skyscrapers, etc., beautiful women of every nation, color & creed. Where else can you get a good greasy pastrami samwidge at 2 AM after zydeco dancing? (Here in Denver they think they're doing you a favor by cutting off the fat... oy!) Plus I get goose bumps from places in my memory & events of the past.... you should go!!!

If you haven't seen French Quarter, you should. But it doesn't do much for me anymore. I'll go down for Louisiana Music Factory, occasional gigs of Bryan Lee or Dwayne Dopsie... I do like sitting by the river tho (especially at sunrise!) and Cafe Du Monde.
Seems like FQ goes thru phases. Right after the World's Fair in mid 80s seemed like they had more live music.
