I read this in a review for the Doheny Blues Fest that just took place in California this weekend:

"That was not the case with Buckwheat Zydeco, who was forbidden by his doctor to play his customary accordion licks and manned the Hammond B3 instead."

Does anyone have any more to add to this? I was not at the blues fest and did not see him at Jazzfest. Was he ok at Jazzfest? Just wondering.

I don't like spreading rumors, but I had heard that he had some form of cancer prior to Fest. I didn't see him there, but I did see him playing the B-3 at the Stomp. Nothing noticeable about the way he looked.

I was on the rail for his Fairgrounds set. He looked happy and energetic. But yes, he did play only the B-3, no accordian.

Wow, this is interesting - hope Buckwheat is ok. He's scheduled to play the Toronto Jazz Festival, and although he's not my favourite zydeco act, I never pass up the chance to see some good chanka chank here in Toronto because appearances by acts like that are rare up here. If he's playing the B3 (not that there's anything wrong with that!), I would sure like to know before dropping $35 on a ticket and inviting a zydeco virgin to join me...

Do you ever get down to Rochester or Ithaca for zydeco events? Not sure how far it is exactly from Toronto, but they have some great lady dancers in Upstate NY and can always use a few good men.
You should try it...

I saw him at Tip's Thanksgiving night '07 and he played the B3 all night. He played over two hours with high energy. Subsequent to that show I heard that he had gone back to playing the organ which he had not played for many years. I hope he is well, he put on a great show that night.

He had surgery recently and is only playing B3 as far as I know at the moment. Don't know the details i only know him in passing, but played with him at Rock and Bowl April 30 and looked/sounded great and was in good spirits.

He played the organ at Jazz fest and did not seem to have the energy that he had in 2008. He did not sing.

This just in... and might answer some questions:

National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition Saturday will feature Buckwheat Zydeco on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Host Scott Simon interviews American musical icon Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural, Jr. and plays songs from his new Alligator CD, Lay Your Burden Down. The piece is scheduled to air during the first hour of the two-hour program.

Buckwheat Zydeco is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. USA Today calls Buckwheat a “zydeco trailblazer.” OffBeat says the new CD is “Buck’s most adventu! rous dis c yet…funky, slow-grinding and hypnotic.” And Sonicboomers.com cheers, “Lay Your Burden Down is a vastly entertaining and appealingly diverse package.”

Weekend Edition Saturday airs on more than 800 non-commercial stations across the US, in over 100 countries on NPR Worldwide, on HD Radio, Sirius Satellite radio and it is also streamed on the web. This show reaches an audience well into the millions.
