View Full Version : New Orleans' version of The Onion
I was unpacking some more last night(what's the rush right?)and found a my copy of The Levee. I'd never seen or heard of it but it's pretty damn funny. If you enjoy The Onion, you might get a kick out of it. The article about the Kink's dude is pretty funny.

HA!
Even the Soul Queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas, has gotten in on the Bon Jovi Jazz Fest lovefest: “When ‘Born to Be My Baby’ was first released, I used to spend long nights in bed imagining that Jon was talking to me, that I was the one born to be his baby. I still think he was born to be my man.”

quite humorous...
“Second, chasing criminals? We’re cops and we don’t even do that. So, obviously, we don’t recommend it for skinny, middle-aged British singers. This is the 504, not the West End of London.”
DeFillo added that police had arrested one of the suspects and would probably seek the other.
According to spokesperson Lola Lalalalalola, Davies has been in New Orleans writing material for an upcoming solo record, which was tentatively titled “Good Lord, I Hope I Don’t Get Shot while I’m in New Orleans Writing Songs for My Solo Record.”
Davies has since decided to change the name of the record to “Okay, That Hurt.”

"would probably seek the other".... gotta laugh.....
story time... the kinks are involved
summer of 79... workin' part time as a security guard at the cape cod coliseum,.. owned then by the infamous vince mcmahon..
the kinks are playin' one evenin',.. can't recall who the warm up band was...
my job,.. guard a double side door... no one in,.. no one out...
they oversell the joint,... it's packed solid,.. hotter than hell inside... the doors have small glass windows where i'm constantly confronted w/ faces of agony... all shapes and sizes of people high as kites,.. drippin' sweat,.. are beggin' to be let out the door so they can get some air... at one point there were some 20 people lyin' on the ground outside my door,.. and as they would recover a bit,.. if they wanted back in i would let them back in... it literally became a revolvin' door.......
my supervisor comes along at somewhat of a slow point,.. looks around at a dozen or so people lyin' or sittin' on the ground,.. and he tells me "to take a break"... i say "for how long"...
he says,.. "how about for good,.. you're fired... and what was the hardest part about no one in,.. no one out?"..
my response,.. "probably the sick kids who were beggin' for fresh air"...
anywho,.. as i was dressed in my outfit that screamed part bus driver/part cop,.. i went around to the front door,.. waved to my fellow bus driver guards and walked in w/ no problem... made a straight line to backstage and enjoyed a couple of beers amongst a motley crew of band hanger ons,.. got bored of that and went out to catch the rest of the set amongst the ticket holders... immediately came across a cutie pie who told me that she could not get back to her front row standin' area... i manned up and told her i would escort her,.. she offered a small tightly wrapped gift in exchange...
we then set about excusin' our way through the shoulder to shoulder crowd,.. the uniform was a handy tool.. we got to where she was previously,.. then i turned around to face a very angry northeast mob... seemed they had an eye on the part of my uniform that looked cop-ish... i was hopin' the bus driver aspect would stand out alil' more...
i turned to one of the girls friends and asked if anyone had a light,.. luckily someone did,.. i lit the lil' sumthin' she gave me to celebrate her return... i took it in my hand,.. faced the mob and took a big ass draw,.. and let out a huge cloud of smoke... the crowd around us,.. no longer a mob,..or angry,.. broke out in a cheer,.. high fives everywhere... i quickly took off my shirt and spent the rest of the show partyin' while the kinks played out their set...
very interestin' night,.. one that will never be forgotten.....

Good story (and good story-telling).

thank you festbabe,.. it was a memorable evenin'.... if i knew i was goin' to get canned i could have made a killin' lettin' people into that sold out event... but it was way too crowded as it was... i'm amazed no one was killed that night... i actually thought i was a goner when i turned and faced that angry mob.... but a lil' smoke signal,.. w/ a dash of stripper action,.. and all was well....
lit,.. cover to cover you say,.. and then you skip right past my lil' story... hmmmm....
that's right,.. i said hmmmmmmm......

I had time to read then. And patience. Been a long day and I can't do long passages now. Besides, I've got to get to work on a song...
Ok Paul. Good read. Great story. Until the part where you took off your shirt...

hey,.. i was all of 22 in those days.... makes for a different vision...
startin' that summer and continuin' on for the followin' six years,.. i lived the life of a world travelin' beach bum w/ an unquenchable thirst for tannin',... a hobby that may yet come back and haunt me but good....
but,.. i could "pull off" shirtless back then...

The Levee is great,I always take a copy home with me.
I seem to remember that last year the edition around Jazzfest time had the headline that said some thing like, Bush Unveils Monument To His Own Stupidity.and it was about some memorial or whatever that had the wrong spelling on it etc.
I liked this Mays edition, lots of good stuff the C-Murder,the Gatemouth.Anchovie and Pirates article were all very funny, hopefuly they can keep up the good work.
Cheers
