No matter how much time I take, no matter how many lists I make...I will forget something. I'm not a big camper, so i'm not even sure what i'll need.
In the case of forgetting something vital (whatever that means), is there a market/ food store nearby? It's my first CFF. Thanks in advance!

You can never go wrong with a Greek Festival Sharon....
My Yia Yia (Grandmother in Greek) was always the queen of the kitchen at all the festivals... I being Greek know a few things about these gatherings.. Always fun!
Check out this link for more Greek festivals in your areas... and I so want to go to the festival in NOLA someday....

I was originally supposed to go to a wedding in Buffalo, but the situation with my Grandmom changed those plans.
Friday – Going to see a play or going to see Allen Toussaint at the Village Vanguard if I don’t catch the late show tonight or tomorrow, cleaning the apartment later
Saturday – Going to Philly to see my family and my Grandmom, who’s nearing the end of the line
Sunday – Coming back in the AM, working all day in the garden, getting ready to belatedly start planting; possibly going to see a musician friend’s birthday gig where he’ll play 32 songs from 1977 with a rotating cast who must all play an instrument that they are unfamiliar with at some point during the show
Monday – If I feel up to it, firing up the smoker for a small party for friends in the neighborhood

Like Sharon, I don't have specific musical plans for this weekend.
If the rain permits, I've got some exterior house painting to do. (I'm almost done. No, really!) If not, I'll focus on some inside the house honey-dos.
Has that new Dan Brown movie opened yet? That looks good. Plus, there's that new Star Trek film. Has anyone else noticed a movie is almost as expensive as going to a concert these days? What's up with that?
Our good friends in the next block put in a new pool last summer... I think I hear that bad boy calling me. :) I haven't been swimming yet this year! I didn't even SEE the pool at the Hilton Riverside...
Our Rays are playing the Marlins -in Miami- so I'll catch them on TV, if at all.

I'm sorry to hear about your Grandmom. Prayers to you and your family.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
She's 90, and she's lived a great life and has been a great grandmother. (In fact, after my brother had a son a couple of months ago, she officially became a great grandmother!) Not long after she lost her husband almost 30 years ago, she decided to get the most out of life, so she did a lot of traveling and saw the world. She's the reason I'm an adventurous eater, and she loved hearing about and seeing the pictures of all the crazy food I would eat in New Orleans, as Nola was one of her favorite places she visited. I would always have to call her after eating a softshell crab po' boy because she lived for hearing about that. In fact, softshell crabs were the subject of our last phone conversation before things took a toll for the worse, as we talked while I was strolling down Decatur, headed to the French Market, in my annual fruitless search to find a very specific green eelskin keychain changepurse that hasn't been made since the mid '80s! Every year she'd ask me to look for it at the French Market, and every year I'd come home with something similar but not what she wanted. It became a running joke between us.
At this point, I just hope she is able to go quickly and peacefully.

If only we all can have a relationship like this with our grandparents and later as one as well.
While I learned and gained much from my folks who passed many years ago it was my grandfather who taught me to fish, to eat well too, to love the game of baseball, enjoy sleeping under the stars and learning the art of forgiveness. The memories and lessons are endless with Poppie.
My heart goes out to you but am so glad that you have such a wonderful closeness to her and while the memories are bitter sweet now they will continue to fill you with love and warmth for a lifetime.
Peace to you and you loved Grandmother.

We have been getting some much needed rain! We have a little beach fest that is planned for this weekend ~ but it looks like it might be a bit soggy...

You know, groovy? I think you're going to have a great Memorial Day weekend. You'll cherish your time with your Grandmom and so will she. Puttering in the garden and digging in the dirt sounds like the perfect activity for soothing some angst. And then being with friends to share in a celebration of music and laughter is a fantastic next step.

You are absolutely right.
I consider myself to be a very lucky guy.
It's the main reason why I don't feel overwhelmingly sad about this situation. I'm sad for her, of course, and I want this to be as easy as possible on her, but I've gotten so much out of our time together that I just feel eternally grateful to have had someone like her in my life.

Sunday - family party at mom's house. I think we'll make Sazuracs for everyone!
Monday - begin the back yard renovation/upgrade. Trying to create a New Orleans courtyard feel and see if we can make the 2010 Neighborhood Garden Tour selection.

R*in all weekend means I have to fix the toilet! :(
I can't put it off another week....
Saturday I have a group of students in from Thibodaux ....here's the letter that I couldn't refuse:
"My name is Alex Plaisance a senior art student from Thibodaux Louisiana. Art has been a major part of my life ever since I was young. I feel I have excelled in art while in high school mainly because I have had such a loving and caring art teacher. Her name is Stephanie Donaldson, she is an art graduate from LSU and one of the best artists I know. She has touched so many lives as an art teacher in her 6 or so years of teaching that I feel it is time to give back.. I am the Art club Vice President here at Thibodaux High school, and this year the senior art board has decided to give Mrs. Donaldson a gift. She has always told us that she has done almost every art project there is except one, blow glass. She has always wanted to ever since I started taking her classes.
I know this is not a usual request, but I feel that this is our chance to make her dreams come true. Would it be possible to set up an appointment where we, the senior art board, could take her to your studio and let her take a lesson in glass blowing? I assure you money is not an issue. We will find a way to pay for her lesson, as well as any materials or anything else she may need. Please help me in making Mrs. Donaldson’s dream come true, it is the least I can do as a student, she has touched my life and changed me for the better. She deserves this from the art club. "
How could I say no???? Especially since both Mrs RT and I were teachers...

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, Groovy

In any case, I don't want my story to turn this into a somber threadjack, so let's get back to business of having fun this weekend. :)

In between, yard work, taking care of and riding my own horses (or falling off which is more often the case) and such so I can be free for CFF the following weekend.
What kind of horses do you have? I have an A.Q.H.A. mare, an Appaloosa gelding, and an American Paint Horses gelding. I thought I was the only horse person on here.
I'm going to ride this weekend, after a 6+ month lay off. Should be interesting, to say the least!

Blessing to you both. I was the last person on earth my grandmother spoke to before she died. After six years, I still miss her smile and patient ways, but I know she is in a better place. She is the only person I've ever known who wore a sweatsuit with an apron. :)

I have 2 1/2 retired TB racehorses 18, 14, and 12. The 1/2 is a rescue project with a friend. I also run (I use this term loosely) a small horse rescue for the county. We have a paint that was just returned due to job relocation/lack of funds. Really pretty horse but is a bit of a bully...he just wants all the attention. Has some backend issues (arthritic hocks so some fusing and just under developed in the stiffle region). Nothing that can't be fixed with some TLC, work and supplements.
Loved horses all my life...got 1st one at 30 although worked with them a bit in college. Big racing fan and have worked backside as a hotwalker sporadically, when needed by friend, and have actually raced a couple. My riding is pitiful. Love to jump but have never had the time to get very good...plus a couple good tumbles put the fear of god in me :)
Enjoy the ride. Velcro works :)

Where's the wedding? Anywhere near Santa Barbara? :D
Nope, Nor Cal (South Bay, I think it's Cupertino?) Bride and groom are San Jose folks.
When we lived in the Bay Area, we took the Amtrak down to Santa Barbara for a wedding once, that was a lot of fun. I believe I bought MY wedding dress in Santa Barbara that trip (went shopping with my sis).

As they say, horseback riding is the art of keeping a horse between you and the ground! :)
I grew up with horses, but never thought I'd have them in my adult life until my daughter was 8 and wanted to have one. It must be genetic! I was on a horse before I could walk and have pursued many different disciplines and spent many happy hours with them.
My father had gaited horses and two racetrack thoroughbreds. I rode one of them when I was about 7 years old. Never forget it; it was like sitting on top of a Brontosaurus! My "thing" right now is doing beach rides. I've ridden on beaches in 3 countries and in Maui. Also hope to ride in all 50 states!
It seems like a lot of adults are satisfying lifelong dreams and getting horses for the first time. One of the most personally gratifying things I've done recently was to sell a Paint mare I had raised from weanling status to a 50+ year old woman who wanted to get out on trails with her friends. She had never ridden before in her life and her first lesson on my mare was without reins! It was a perfect match and they're both happy.
So cool what you are doing with the rescue work!

Oh who is your friend with the Bday gig and where? NYC? sounds like a good time!!
My friend is Jordan Shapiro, a talented multi-instrumentalist who logged several years with the Zappa tribute band, Project Object. Nowadays, he's mostly known for playing guitar with and being the primary songwriter for Astrograss, a newgrass/bluegrass band that has made a name for themselves in the city by playing shows for kids. They do shows for adults, too, but those shows feature more nudity. ;)
He's playing at the Jalopy Theatre, which is a beautiful old-time venue in Red Hook (Brooklyn). If you've never been there, you owe it to yourself to pay a visit sometime because it has a very non-New York feel. It's a vintage instrument shop with an ancient-looking stage and some moveable church pews for seats. They always have great performances that range from New Orleans jazz to bluegrass to folk to burlesque to vaudeville and all spaces in between. It's very low-key and one of my favorite places to visit for a show.
This is the second time Jordan has hosted a birthday revue. For his 30th, he had a rotating cast of 30 join him in playing 30 songs from the 30 years of his life. They started in 2007 and gradually worked their way down to 1977, playing an eclectic array of covers. It was a schoolnight, and I only made it to 1987 or so, but it was a blast.
The details of the show are here:
http://www.jalopy.biz/performance_show.php?eventid=407
The show is a benefit for the The Zander Toulouse Educational Fund. Zander was one of Jordan's students, and this wildly entertaining and intellectual child tragically died in an accident at the young age of 8. Oh Sissy, I want to go back to Greece very badly! After 5 days in Athens with a side trip to Delphi, I took a cruise that stopped at Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey. I'd love to go back, take the ferries and island hop at my own pace. I also REALLY want to visit the monasteries at Meteora - they look amazing! I can't believe you were there a month; that must have been fabulous. Did you visit Meteora? Any tips for someone afraid of heights?? :o

Love the story about your mare. Its something special when you see that connection made...and it isn't just the human. I'm always amazed by how horses react to different people. They are truly special creatures.
Beaches? How cool. I'm always jealous of the pictures of the folks shown in Cross County International riding along the shores of some far off land. Someday! My goal is to get to Ireland, visit the tracks and training operations there and then hack across the country side. Come on lottery ticket :)

Very cool. i love horses too. just signed on to volunteer at a horse rescue farm around here. sounds like you are living the life.

Oh Sissy, I want to go back to Greece very badly! Did you visit Meteora? Any tips for someone afraid of heights?? :o
Linza, you've been to some places there that I haven't visited, either, so I definitely want to go back, too! I took ferries between the islands. The trip over to Crete from the mainland was a 12 hour trip . The boat left Piraeus at 6 P.M. and arrived the next morning, so I slept for most of it due to lack of sleep on the flight over from Kennedy the previous night.
I used busses to go from town to town while on Crete and stayed in pensions (private homes that rent rooms to tourists), so I met a lot of local people. Rode bikes a lot, too, and rented Vespas for zipping around.
In the afternoon, the fishermen's boats would come in loaded down with the day's catch and the restaurants lining the harbor bought directly from them.
I camped for a week on the beach in Karpathos because it was the only place in Greece that allowed open camping. The rest was restricted to commercial campgrounds and government parks. Up in the mountains in Karpathos, there is a village where the Greek language used by the people is 900 years old and they dress in a style from that era.
Going to the tabernas at night was a riot! They sell stacks of plates and at a certain point in the evening, everybody was smashing plates on the floor. I love bouzouki music!
As for advice about heights? I don't know ... don't look down? :D

Good for you, Linza! Those rescue horses need all the lovin' they can get. You are truly a blessing to those critters! This summer, I'm going to work at a therapeutic riding center as a walker. It's a riding program for children with developmental issues. It's a blast to see the smiles on their faces when they get in the saddle.

Hi ya Linza.....congrats on volunteering. I think its a great way for folks who love horses to "pseudo" have them without the financial burden. Of course, there will be those that come along and saying goodbye will be tough but the experience is still oh so worth it. Trust me, I'm a big softy and I have had foster kitties leave my home and I cried for days. Still worth it to see them thrive in their new homes.
If you don't already know how to ride or just need to sharpen skills, you may want to consider taking lessons somewhere. Where I live, I found an instructor that clumped us, ah "older" riders, together and we always had a blast and I met some great people.

Thats cool. We have a program here that a couple of my friends volunteer at and I have been lucky enough to see some of there shows. OMG, the joy and confidence the children and young adults get is amazing...and the horses are just in a category all there own.

Sharon - Steve was born about 1/2 hour from Meteora! We have tons of pictures (old school so you'll just have to come visit & see them - there's some event out here in September .... I'm just saying ;)).
I could only get to one of the Monasteries due to my bum knee. As far as the heights thing, my only suggestion is a shot of Ouzo before you go & go with someone you really trust!! It'll be worth it.

Lorrie and I are going camping at Idlewild, (It's in the hills above Palm Springs). It should be pretty low key. I need it, not from working but from some on the concerts I've been to the last couple of nights.
Two nights ago I went to The Greek Theater here in Los Angeles to see the Doobie and th Allman Brothers play. A great show with those two, also Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers made a surprise visit and jammed with the Allmans, then Bruce Willis came out and played some great harmonica. I partied hard that night, then last night I partied harder with a concert by Janes Addition and Nine Inch Niles. One hell of a show that was too. Those two concerts in a row makes me really want to just relax. Hopefully I can watch the Indy 500 and pound down some more beer.

i will be in jacksonville this weekend and by chance the jax jazz festival will be going on. dr john friday night, marcus roberts trio and steve turre saturday. bill frisell and preservation sunday among others. lots of pop jazz, a la patti austin too, but i will be avoiding that. it is free, they do a good job with transportation and crowds and there will be enough there to keep this jazzbo happy, if not ecstatic, as they shy away from the avant garde at all costs imho.
and shortly thereafter is bonnaroo, which i have never been to but may try this year. impressions of other JF fans who have attended? lots of NOLA acts, along with some cat named sprongstein or something like that. the phish boys are playing too, but my interest in that is less than zero.

I agree - don't do Ouzo (not a licorice fan). After tasting home made Retsina in Greece, I understand what it is supposed to taste like (nothing much to do with the scata we get here). It was smooth and flavorful - not two words usually I use in the same sentence as Retsina!

Retsina? Isn't that the specks in Certs?
close but no cigar ... retsyn ... hmmm, maybe retsina isn't so bad ....
Retsyn is a trademarked name for a combination of copper gluconate and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, held by Cadbury Adams (a division of Cadbury Schweppes). It is an ingredient in Certs, Certs Cool Mint Drops, and Certs Power Mints.
According to a Pfizer FAQ Page, Retsyn, in addition to the flavor, is responsible for the efficacy of Certs against breath odors. The hydrogenated vegetable oil and the copper gluconate absorb odors in the mouth. The copper gluconate is also responsible for Retsyn's green color.

Boogaloo was loads of fun with perfect weather and awesome music but first we had lunch at Ruby Slipper. My food was delicious but jenn and I were a bit disappointed they didn't have a full lunch menu on saturdays. So on sunday we went to Russell's Marina and got us some lunch food while hebjamn got his breakfast food. Then we and juana went on a tour of the lake, something I'd never done before, in the jamns' new car, Next juana and I were off to the money wasters parade with the kinfolks brass band. That was my first parade where I walked the whole route and I loved it! Dat's about it!

It was so good to see the locals this past weekend-jenn and david, lisa and frank, jada, dan, seabass, justagirl, Kim and umm, I forgot the other festgiving fish cooker's name. Also saw denbear and irish and my buddy, juana.
It was lovely to see you too, mama!
Boogaloo was excellent wasn't it? And we LOVE Russell's! It's our traditional breakfast joint before heading to Saints games - I especially like the egg white omelets . . . with an accompanying Bloody of course. :D ;)

It's sah-weet! Though, I've only gotten to ride in it so far (I did test drive it, but that's been about it at this point) . . . Frank's taken it on it's first road trip up to Jackson overnight, and I hear it did well.
