I just stumbled upon what looks to be another fantastic summertime musical experience. Has anyone ever heard of the Rothbury Festival in Rothbury, MI?

I've heard good things about that fest, and what a fantastic lineup. In addition to the great headliners are some other favorites I don't get to hear often enough, like Son Volt (Americana/altcountry, the other Uncle Tupelo spawn) and Railroad Earth (Americana/bluegrass/jam), and great African music - Femi Kuti, King Sunny Ade.

I found it by doing a John Butler tour search on the hope that he was touring the US this year. It's across the lake from us but doable as a weekend trip. I've been wanting to see JB for a while now and this looks like a great way to spend the 4th of July weekend.

Hey iwanna, I'm definitely going to Rothbury. It looks fantastic, doesn't it? I've never been before. I'll be there for Saturday & Sunday. Keep me posted on your plans, maybe we can meetup!! :)

Cool, Sharon! I'll definitely keep you posted. We won't be camping and would only be there Saturday/Sunday as well. From the few artist's web sites I scoured I found

John Butler and Les Claypool on Saturday
Toots & the Maytals, Yonder Mnt String Band, and Gov't Mule on Sunday
Toubab Krewe's web site says they'll be there July 2-5 so I don't know what that means.

My camping experience is.... none, so I don't know expensive from reasonable from cheap. Do you guys rent RVs when you camp, or do you have one tucked away in the FQ somewhere?

Well, I'm a tent/backpack camper from way back since I was a little kitten; Frank is not - hence the move to RV camping . . . we rent RVs locally near the festing sites and it seems to work very well.

However, after you factor in flights to/from Michigan and the very high rates they're charging for RV site and hookups (so you can have water and electrical power, sites without hookups are less expensive) - it makes trying out Rothbury unrealistic for us. :(

Too bad - it has a GREAT lineup!

Well for what its worth, I for one would be quite happy to see you and Gards and any other Threadheads who make it to Wanee. Gards had mentioned the possibility to me at IAC but I wasn't aware that you were contemplating this one - I think it will be a blast, potentially made even more so by the presence of the honey bears! I believe Jolie and her krewe as well as Mariena have said they are in for Wanee also...

I believe there is a NASCAR race somewhere relatively close that weekend - we had to scramble to get the last RV available at the place we rent from in Monticello (outside Tallahassee). Hopefully you can find something closer to home to bring up to the Suwannee.

I would be VERY pleased to have you and Mr. Gards meet up with us at Wanee indeed!!! :D

However, you're speaking about this in terms of "may" - not "gonna" . . . so I was reserving actual excitement for when your tense becomes definite as opposed to potential . . . ;)

YYR!! What fun it would be to have some more THs at my first camping fest...

I am a inexperienced camper as well so this will probably make better sense to those of you who are experienced or who have camped at Suwanee.

We are traveling with friends with a 5th wheel.. we have 2 spots reserved-- one for their RV, one for our tent.

Other friends called today and there are no longer "hook-up" sites available, only primitive sites which they say you can put a RV on, but you have to use a generator.

What sites do you have reserved? We are in SP-2 between the horse stables and the main stage (and close to the bath house - maybe too close). Our site is an easy 5-10 minute walk to both stages, and we'll probably be able to hear the music from the main stage just fine from the RV....for when I've had my fill of beer and the need to drink some nice whisky takes over.

Oh wait... Performers so far include: Joe Ely Band, Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women, Roomful of Blues, Michelle Malone, Eric Lindell, The Nighthawks, Pieta Brown & Dream #9, Over The Rhine, and Shemekia Copeland.

Sounds like a good deal to me too. I've camped since i was a youngun. Don't forget a tarp to go under your tent. It will be save you in rainy weather. Buy a tent that is of the taller variety. Don't get a pup tent. Bring either lounge chair cushions or a blowup mattress. Bring earplugs. You may be right next to a music stage or late partiers. These fests will sell food but it's fun to eat at your campsite. Make what you can ahead of time--things like chicken salad, potato salad, desserts, fruit, baked beans. Breakfast is a great meal for campouts- bacon, eggs and fried skillet toast are easy. I did pancakes, bacon and blueberry topping one year at wakarusa. Dont forget a large pan to wash dishes in. also plenty of trashbags. Bring a sweatshirt. I've been to more than one fest where i've forgotten this rule and had to buy one somewhere. Cold weather can come when you least expect it. Bring a tarp or large bedspread type thingie that you can tie up between your tent and your car for shade. and last, expect to have to roll out of your tent shortly after the sun hits it. Of course you can roll the mattress out too and sleep outside but it will get hot as hell inside. Oh, and don't forget some kind of bug repellent. Find out if where you're going has chiggers. If they do, spray your feet and ankles liberally or pay the price of lots of itching.

whoo Sharon - Stu and I are doing Rothbury. AND in celebration of our 20 year Anniversary are doing the "good life" package -we are doing that amazing one with the safari tents and electricity and real beds. It's sick expensive, we could do a Mediterranean Cruise for less, it's insane but it's our 20 year Anniversary and it needs to be celebrated BIG, plus it's just so US. We love the lineup - so glad to hear there will be some TH's in attendance!

...

If you put a tarp under your tent fold it so nothing sticks out around the edges or it may funnel water under your tent and make things worse (I never bother with a tarp under the tent myself, but it's a good idea to protect the tent bottom from cuts if the ground is rocky or rooty).

When selecting a campsite take a look at the trees overhead to make sure they're healthy. Last time I set up at Spirit of the Suwanee the first place I picked looked great but there was a dead limb that had dropped and caught on a lower branch and I didn't want that hanging over my head all weekend.

Cooking outdoors makes food taste great no matter what you cook!

If you're bringing bikes to SOS bring front and back lights and extra lights to ride at night. The Wanee website says 'no bikes' but I'm pretty sure that's in the stage area and not throughout the campground. It is very cool to take a ride down to the river late at night; if the moon's out the sandy beach will blind you. The stars are incredible. Because it's about a 1/3 of a mile down to the river there will be very few people making the trip so it's a great way to take a break from the crowd.

I concur with HH about making sure your tarp doesn't stick out around the edges of your tent. Or if you can, get a tent that has a matching "footprint" (a special ground cover that exactly fits the dimensions of your tent) - I ALWAYS use some sort of tarp/footprint, as I want my nice Marmot tent to have as long a life as possible (says the former R.E.I. employee) . . . ;)

As far as bikes at Wanee go, usually it's okay to bike around Suwannee - but I was under the impression that due to the very large crowd (much larger and probably rowdier than the crowds at either MagFest or SpringFest), they're asking folks not to bring bikes to Wanee. I wonder if that holds for golf carts also - maybe one of the folks here who's been to Wanee before can keep me honest on this?

If you were coming to Wanee, I'd be more than happy to loan you my tent and other camping gear - but it sounds like you won't and are mulling over camping at Rothbury . . . so unfortunately, I can't easily loan you gear. :(

I also recommend either a Therm-a-Rest inflatable pad (what I have) or a good air mattress for under your sleeping bags - cots are a PITA. A small doormat for the front of your tent (to try and keep dust, dirt, mud and grass out of the tent).

The rainfly is handy not only to keep water out, but also to give shade and cooler temps than without it (depending on where your tent is set up and the design of it - unfortunately some rainflies can cover up venting).

P.S. - if that gear is truly in new condition, that's a hell of a deal! :D

Oh, thank you, kitty. That's very generous and sweet of you. Someday. Hey, who knows? Maybe we'll like this camping sh.. and make a habit of these camp out fests!

I spoke to the guy offering the package on craigslist and it's up to $350 with a bigger second tent. Not sure what his deal is, or why I want two tents (I don't), but I'm thinking of a plan B that still involves camping but not necessarily purchasing.

Outside of Jazz fest, Rothbury is the best festival I have been to and I have been to a number. I went last year with my wife, a buddy who also is a Jazz Fest regulars and a few other friends. Disclaimer- we camped in VIP. It totally was worth it for us. Air conditioned bathroom trailers and shower trailers, etc. I am not a big time camper, but it helped that we had awsome weather. Also, there were almost no bugs to be found. Heard the promoters sprayed for a good time in advance to kill the little critters. The set up is great. There is a part between some stages called the Sherwood Forest. There were hammocks hanging between trees and places to sit and hang out. At night there were amazinf lights and lighted objects hanging in the forest. Do a google images search for "Rothbury Sherwood Forest." So cool at night!!! Food was so so. We brought food with us that was better. The people were great too. Met many intersting fun people.

Also, the music was amazing. Line up is great this year. Most of our group is going back. We can't make it for number of reasons, but will be checking out another 4th of July weekend festival I have heard is great and always wanted to check out, the High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, Ca. John Butler is there too, among others.

So many good festivals out there, but only so much time and money......

It really is. The background on my laptop is a picture I took walking through there. After the Phil Lesh and Friends set Sunday night we took one more stroll through on the way to our campsite. It was crowded with people walking, sitting, etc. Someone near me started yelling trying to find their friend Carl. Soon everyone in th forest was yelling "Carl" or "Where's Carl." Was quite funny. I always wonder how late people were still hanging out there before the security made them go because there were so many people and many were in definite hang out mode or crashed out in the hammocks.

Another cool thing was all of the various art instillations. Funky thing in meadows, paths, etc. One was a monky thing (go to youtube and search Rothbury monkeys) that moved to percussion and music. There were animal sculptures and in one spot sculptures that were percusion instruments and people would be playing on them when you walked by.

Enjoy! I think you will have a great time. Many good bands. Definitely check out the Black Crowes. Luther Dickinson from the North Miss. Allstars is playing guitar with them. Caught them in Chicago in December when there on business and it is a band with renewed energy and man Luther rips. Did a great cover of Cold Rain and Snow. Anyway, I will be interested to get oyur take on Rothbury.

My favorite Fest besides JF is easily Grassroots in Trumansburg, NY (near Ithaca), and I go to Zydeco festivals all summer (already been to Fests in San Diego & Daphne, Alabama since JF)
Grassroots has a great eclectic music mix, good food & a real hippy vibe, (a refined Woodstock) Beautiful scenery & all nite Keith Frank dance
Don't camp tho; you won't sleep...

Totally agree, jonny. I do wish they'd post their line-up. Marcia Ball, for sure, and Eric Lindell, I hear, but last year's was sooo good.

Wish we were making it again Johnny but alas Cousin week is the 11th to the 18th. Thanks for last year, it was real nice to drive the 650 miles and land in your back yard to relax before the show at Fitzgeralds.

Have fun and we sure are gonna miss it.:(

That's an insanely great lineup.

If you are not familiar with Martin Sexton, I highly recommend checking him out. Tough conflict with G. Love, but if you can catch at least some of Martin's set I don't think you'll be disappointed. Great singer/songwriter with incredible range and infectious energy and passion.

At some point earlier in the year, Kitten and I discussed how much fun it would be to try to hit at least one festival per week during 2009, and then write a book about it. We're a little bit off pace, but if we count this weekend's "three festivals in one" at the French Market (Creole Tomato, Seafood and Cajun/Zydeco) as 3 festivals, we'll be almost back on track....although another 10 day stretch like we just completed with CFF and Wanee on back-to-back weekends might be the end of me (and my continued employment).

No fair. You live in Nola. You could do a festival a week without ever leaving the Parish.
