I'm a first weekender. But If I was going to 2nd weekend, I'd definitely catch The Woodshed with Roland Guerin and James Singleton, Nicholas Payton and the World Saxaphone group. All jazz.

What corona said + JOHN BOUTTE for sure. Also just love Luther Kent & Trickbag for some fun bluesey stuff.

My sister loves D.L. Menard for cajun music and dancing. The lostcajun and the piscesgirl were kicking up plenty of dust last year!

I didn't put John Boutte or Luther Kent on my list because I thought they were too well known! ;)

For swamp pop, I'm really looking forward to Tony Joe White.

I wasn't sure about my list but he did say "anything but the big, big named acts". I took that to mean anything but ABB, Rod Stewart etc. I coulda been wrong though....I love these lists cuz it always makes me find bands I never knew I loved before :)

Anders Osborne- his 2004 set is still one of my favs.

Eric Lindell- great younger generation nola guitarist.

Just about anything at the brass band stage.

Irma Thomas tribute- anything she does is moving.

Iguanas- a little latin flavor.

Walter "Wolfman" Washington- bluesman extraordianire.

And whatever catches your ear. Make lots of plans, then totally ignore them!

oh yes, seen the indians many times! im sure i will catch galactic, seen them many a time. and yes, i did mean anybody but the ABB type of bands. not that i dont like them, but every time I go to jazz fest im always more amazed by the "sleeper bands" than the huge name acts. most of the time i end up discovering someone at jazz fest by walking by a tent or stage on the way back from getting beer or something.

this happened with bonerama. I heard them and quickly grabbed my fiance and told her "You Gotta Hear This!"

So, I guess I want to give myself a chance to catch some of the really good, less known acts that will be performing.

I'll second that. They played my mom's wedding a couple of years ago, killer.

I didn't know much about them at the time but my mom's friends raved about them. Anyway, they opened with that tune that goes "in the wee wee hours between night and day" and I was a bit floored

What's the song called by the way? who wrote it? anyone know what I'm referring to? There's a Chuck Berry tune with a similar name but I don't think it's the same song.

and oh yea, I got a pretty cool mom!

eta: Professor Longhair song called "In the Night", now if I could only find the lyrics!

The Iguanas are a long time favorite of mine. I love their groove, can't stop dancing when they are playing!

Not sure what you think is lesser-known, but depending on what your looking for, you can't go wrong with some of these
Madison Bumble Bees (word of mouth only)
Galactic (Hard heavy funk)
Holmes Brothers (blues legends)
John Boutte (reall has something to say post-Katrina)
Eric Lindell (bluesy soul - I've never heard of anyone disliking his gigs)
Ivan Neville (real Nola funk)
Big Sam's Funky Nation (good energy)
Sunpie Barnes (fun carnival sound)
Twangorama (if you love great guitars - they are some of the best I have ever seen)
Morning 40 Federation (not your traditional JF fare - boozy sloppy rock)
Coolie Family (solid gospel)
Ingrid Lucia (fun swingy jazz with a NO feel)
Melody Clouds (more solid gospel)
007 (Rocksteady and dancehall done suprisingly well)

Fred (Texas JF Fanatic)
