I'd heard lots of good things about these guys, made it a point to see them. At first I thought they were fun & interesting, quite funny, but maybe not enough to buy a CD. But when they got off the goofy stuff, and the 2 bros did that mellow song about family love, absolutely brought tears to my eyes. beautiful!
Hank Williams meets Woody Allen????
I heard someone describe them as ""punk/bluegrass", but "punk/old time" seemed more appropriate since there wasn't a lot of flashy pickin'.... surprising, since as soon as I saw the cello I was expecting dazzling instrumentals. I strongly suspect these guys are holding out on that, capable of more advanced pickin' than they let on... but thats their choice. Totally unique &fun!
Anybody else?

I saw part of their set (ran back and forth from them to Michael White). It was my first time to see them and I loved them! Enough to pick up a CD first chance I get. Looking forward to hearing more of them.

I agree that they were a bit goofy at first, but then they got down to business, and did a great show..and had some real fans there.

We all tend to focus on our local faves or the BNAs but it's discovering bands like this that make JF so special. Last year it was the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the year before Calexico. Sounds like the Dap Kings might fall into that category as well.

Are you the gentleman from CO I told to check these guys out in the porta line on saturday? If so, glad you enjoyed them! They really are amazing and it seemed the jf crowd really was digging them. They are touring like crazy this summer, so catch them at a town near you. Also, their new Rick Rubin produced album comes out in August, so keep an eye out for that as well.

I live in Colorado but don't recall any porta-line discussion. I heard about them at Grassroots fest last summer near Ithaca, NY
Hope the other Colorado guy took your sage advice!
