So lets hear from some Wilco fans. How was their set? I am so wishing they were doing another performance in town this week. And what about Spoon. What did you think of them?

I think the open air suits them well, I caught their set at Outside Lands in Golden Gate Park last year, great vibes, scenery, and sounds.

Psyched for their new album to come out.

Really sorry I had to miss Wilco. My friend said it was the best set he has ever seen them do, better than the last time he saw 'em at Voodoo. I saw the new DVD at the Prytania last week. Great to see and hear it in a theater. Highly recommended for the fans...

You mean this guy? One of krewe was on the flight back to Chicago with Wilco, and he said this guy was with them. So I assume he is affiliated with them somehow. Great set by Wilco btw.

Yep that is him...He was getting down on stage; smacking his gum and running around shirtless with some Wrangler jeans on.. He was an absolute trip. First time for me seeing Wilco play and I will admit being the critic I am music wise. They put on quite an impressive set of music. Anytime you have 3 guys all playing lead guitar your in for some outright funk!!

I saw Wilco's new DVD "Ashes Of American Flags" at the Prytania Theater last week and it is outstanding. Great to see and hear it on a big screen with big speakers. IT is beautifully filmed and the performances are fantastic. Highly recommended...

That crazy shirtless guy sure looks like Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, but it doesn't seem possible he could join Wilco at JazzFest without lighting up the blogosphere.

I want to re-ask the second question in the original post: How was Spoon? Friends of mine saw them Sunday night in Lancaster PA, said they were "a band at the top of their form"

Hey jtd7 not sure how Spoon was at Fest; but I do know the Spooning I experienced latenight Fest was quite remarkable and turned out to be one hell of a show. Ooops forgive me jtd7; you just left the door wide open on that one and I couldn't resist the bite!!

Seen Wilco 4 times total, this past weekend's fest being my 4th. By far their best show for me. Such solid performing from every member of the band, and it seemed like everyone was really energetic. I was front row center for the show. I'm just wondering if anyone has their setlist, as I totally forgot the songs they did. I know they opened with "Walken", but aside from that, I just really forgot all the songs they played.

I was pretty happy to hear Wilco perform "California Stars" and "Box of Rain".
My friend and I wanted to catch some of Johnny Winter's set, we kept saying we were going to leave after the next Wilco song, we ended up seeing most of Wilco's set and only seeing half of Johnny's last song "Highway 61", which was a real letdown after seeing Wilco. It was the best performance I've seen with this line up.

I just don't get Wilco. Saw them at jazzfest & thought that it sounded like a half-dead cat being beaten against an out of tune piano. Maybe I had too many wobbly pops by then.

This past Fest, or two years ago?

I am a huge fan, but I could totally understand that reaction to their set this year. Lots of distortion and "downer" tunes; not to mention simply being at Acura. Not a good mix for a wonderful afternoon on the fairgrounds; even I left after several tunes because it wasn't doing it for me. But their set at Gentilly two years ago was one of the best BNA performances I've ever seen at Fest, and was a totally different vibe. Give them another shot in a club show and I think you'll have a different experience.

ya know they are more of a sonic thing than a big lotta note thing. Nels Cline is the weirdest guitar player I ever saw. takes some getting used to but, like MJJ too,but I Love em lots now...

Nels has certainly added a different dimension to the band, and caused a significant change in their sound. I didn't totally "get" him either until I saw him play "Impossible Germany" live. Then it began to make at least some sense. It totally works for me now, but YYR it can take some getting used to. I still love their first album, A.M., the best, but I admit to liking pretty much everything else they've done since now, too. And I love seeing them live.

Wilco is one of the best things going right now with a unique sound all their own. And if you can get past the noise and listen to his words you will quickly learn that Jeff Tweedy is one of the best songwriters of our time. The dude is pretty brilliant. In a time where unfortunately songwriting as a form of poetry is very neglected Tweedy is out there trying to redeem the craft.

Seen them live three times. Twice at fest and once at Red Rocks. Agree with other posters that the first show at fest at Gentilly was way better than last year's at Acura, mostly because the set list was a better fit for the vibe of jazzfest. And agree that it was amongst the best BNA sets I've seen at the fairgrounds thus far. That was a great day at Gentilly.

It sure was. I have never spent as much time at any one stage on one day at Fest as I did at Gentilly that day. Just too good to leave.

Cool piece. Hadn't seen that before.

Agree with everyone, they're the best, and either you get it or you don't or maybe it grows on you. I don't. It's like anything else relating to music. If it's not for you, there's plenty out there to check out. But to me, Tweedy...he's genius.

Super stoked to be seeing them tomorrow night in Raleigh. The fest set earlier this year, while it was decent, didn't do it for me, and I'm looking forward to just seeing them at an individual show. CAN'T WAIT!

I really wanted to like WILCO at fest this year. I know alot of fans and have thought them interesting on TV but never really indulged. Stayed for first 4-5 tunes and thought it was interesting but my wife was not digging it. Didn't grab me totally but their was something cool/weird about it. Had FOMS and wanted to see MAceo (iffy) Cyndi LAuper (fun 2 tunes) And Ruthie Foster.I'd like to see Wilco again but probably won't want to pay the price. Too bad about the Acura set.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the first track, Art of Almost. You will be blown away. Better than anything that was on the last album...Actually, one of the best tracks I've heard from anyone in a while now...

Also, while looking through footage of Tweedy interviews, found this, following up on the Sunday Morning footage from earlier...playing with both the boys

So it looks like all "Cissy Strut" all the time, eh? Look out, Stanton, li'l Tweedy is coming after you.

Speaking of which, the only thing that really surprises me is that bigeasy hasn't gotten Stanton into that kid's bedroom yet. Hell, they're neighbors after all...

Nice little interview with Tweedy about about his songwriting:

http://mobile.salon.com/ent/music/2011/09/27/jeff_tweedy_interview/index.html

I don't agree with much of the interviewer/author's perspective, but I enjoy reading Tweedy's own take in his own words.

"Last night, Wilco played the first show of their two-night Atlanta stop at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, playing many of their new songs off their new record The Whole Love. For several songs, Nels Cline played with Duane Allman’s gold Les Paul guitar which he used to record “Layla” with Derek and The Dominoes alongside Eric Clapton. Usually held at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, the guitar was brought to Atlanta to be played by Wilco at this show. Check out Perry Julien’s photos from the performance below."

One of our Jazzfest roomates brought over the new Wilco last night and insisted I put it on - great disc! He might have slightly over-romanticized the 2009 Fest set (first Jazzfest, first Wilco show, first trip to NOLA), but he's right about the new recording capturing some of the Fest set's vibe. Highly recommended for the band's fan-base (I can forgive their trespasses on other recent releases).

like them now but didnt at first. really loved their JF set last year.like em noisy n dissonant. got onboard with ghost is born.

my first wilco show was the infamous richard thompson/wilco gig at the beacon in nyc. 1999-the way it was sold was a double bill and i couldnt believe RT would have to open for some hyped up band (wilco).that i couldnt give a shit about in any incarnation(volt/tupelo) . actually wilco wound up opening for RT.
i went to the box office late in the afternoon and somehow got seat 1 row one center.on the center aisle.directly infront of the stage monitors.waaaaaaay to close for me ever.

i sat down and tried to chill and see if i could dig em and not whince allthe while.and i really kinda did.wilco reminded me of the band and the replacements at the same time.which is cool for me.think this was the summerteeth tour for you actual wilco fans.

unfortunately from the moment i sat down in the first seat front row jeff tweedy was grittin on me and givin me the malocchio, hairy eyeball, evil eye what have you all the time while performing. a whole lot of the time. i think he though i was some sort of nyc music industry marty puffkin type. i have no idea. it was really fuckin weird. i was actually worried he was gonna jump down and take a shot at me. after a long while (i was enjoying the gig to my surprise) i laughed at him while he was grittin me, cause like it was stupid, and im like a rhino and eventually he really got into a bizzarre and nasty exchange with some dickhead heckler a row or two behind me who was tryin to piss him off imho. its always a risk to tell a grumpy fuck to smile. i just wanted to see RT. waaaaaay tooooo much drama.ps i paid for these tickets mr tweedy.

everyone heard this exchange with the heckler and the JT tirade from the stage just gave the evening a weird vibe. wilco's set went on a bit long which abbreviated RTs otherwise stellar ,allbeit wierdedout, set.

everybody from both camps went home sad, pissed disappointed and saying what the fuck just happened.its been written about etc.

btr/nyc

ps incredible wilco grfx st louis poster.
