Best set of the fest! She was up there belting out the songs, dancing like mad, and her band was tight, tight, tight! She had the Blues tent up on their feet - great way to end the day!

I am still doing James Brown-esque primal screams this morning waaaaaaeeeeehhhhh!

She was certainly one of the best. Great set with lots of energy!

I agree that it was an absolutely fabulous show. And, Sharon certainly gave the four girls she brought up on stage to dance a memory of a lifetime!

I saw her show here in Ithaca and she was AMAZING... she and the Dap Kings tore the roof off the theater and everyone was on their feet! I have been urging all my friends to catch her show ever since.

That last time slot was a horrible (wonderful?) decision. Etta James started a bit earlier, so I checked her first, terrific, band was great, heard "Rather Go Blind", a fave.
I've always wanted to see DapKings, so I tore myself away, took the long route around racetrack so I could hear a bit of EWF & DMB. Got to the blues tent, Sharon sounded good, but the sound in the Blues tent is so muddy, detracted a lot. Sounded 100% better outside.
With all that effort to create a controlled environment, Blues Tent is an absolute piece of crap. Should have stayed with Etta, hear she did "Piece Of My Heart"
Oh well, it was a great day anyway

My expectations were sky high and she surpassed them. Take no prisoners! Hurricane Sharon! MY god that woman is the best belter I've ever seen. She was unbelievably good and everyone I tried to get to go see her said "who?" Fools!

By far the best performance I saw at this years fest (first weekend atendee only)

Do you live in Ithaca? Beautiful place, and a little Berzerkley in the woods.
I'm really loving Grassroots fest the last few years... can I assume you go?
Zydeco dancer?
After all these rave reviews I'm gonna make sure to see Dapkings again when I can give my undivided attention, no conflict with Etta James, etc.

I do live in Ithaca... great and beautiful place with a good arts and music scene... it suits me well. I am heading to Jazz Fest this weekend for the first time ever... fest virgin that I am.

Grassroots is lots-o-fun and has that Ithaca hippie vibe. I am not a zydeco dancer, although several of my friends are.

I would have been torn between Etta and Sharon too! :) But, definitely try to catch Sharon Jones sometime.

Hope to see ya at Grassroots then....
My main hangout is dance tent, dark curly hair & beard
Live in Ithaca... lucky you. Do you know Dusk (blue mustache)? That lucky MF lives in Ithaca in summer & N.O. in winter... well not luck, if I had gone to law school & saved my money like him I could do it too...
I figured Sharon will be around longer than Etta, who still kicks ass bigtime, plus sound was crystal clear outside at Gentilly stage, muddy (to me) at Blues tent

I agree with RevJimK - Sound in the tent for Sharon Jones left much to be desired. I probably should have gone up front.

Love it when people agree wit me (tho I'm happy others were satisfied wit sound)
Liked your review of "coffins" novel. I'm gonna buy one for me & one for my hostess, who's an avid reader & New Orleans chauvinist....
however, not sure where Spencer Bohren lives now, but he's from North Dakota or Montana originally

Don't know Dusk... suprisingly enough (he sounds like someone I would know)... I have lived here for 23 years... came here after college and never left. I agree that he is one LUCKY MF to live in both N.O. and Ithaca!

I will definitely be at Grassroots all four days. I think the Threadheads should come North and party with us all in Upstate NY in July! :) My musical taste is best described as eclectic, so I tend to wander from stage to stage... I will look for you at the dance tent! I will be the one with the red cow girl boots!

Glad to hear the sound was good for Etta and that she still kicks it!

I didn't see her at the Fest - I couldn't turn down chipchop's EWF invitiation - but I'll be seeing her in a few weeks at the Toronto Jazz Festival (and possibly in Ottawa for the Blues Festival) and I'm determined to get up on stage and shake my ass with her - she's great!

Love Sharon Jones! Glad she was bringing it and that so many enjoyed her set. Can't wait to see her at the Chicago Bluesfest in a few weeks :D
