Hi,
A friend that's coming down to fest wants to bring his guitar down, but then again, apparently guitars to him are like shoes to me, and a trip to New Orleans is a reason to buy a new one. :)
Can anybody recommend a good guitar store? One that sells used instruments would probably be right up his alley.

I found that place with a quick web search, but I didn't know if it was good or not, so I thought I'd get some expert opinions.

Yeah, N.O. Music Exchange and International Vintage (the one the previously posted link) are about it these days in Orleans Parish. Music Exchange is a more utilitarian vibe, and where most players seem to go for their day to day stuff. The owner Jimmy has done a lot over the years to help out the music community, both through direct service to his customers and community support and sponsorships. Some interesting stuff pops up in there, I've bought tons of stuff there over the years, axes, amps, PA gear, strings and all manner of accessories. There is always at least a couple of interesting pieces floating around, there was a super cool old 22x2 Magnatone amp last time I was in there, sounded great. Just kinda had to hold my breath and walk away before my gear jones got the better of me.
International Vintage has a much more boutique vibe and carries some wonderful vintage and high-end stuff. Last time I was in there they still had that 1957 Stratocaster on the wall, I think they only wanted $375 for it. Oh wait, there was no decimal point, I meant $37,500. They have a wall nearly full of sweet vintage Gibson hollowbodies and lots of make-you-drool goodies and sweet vintage amps. They are Fender, Gibson, Trusart, and I think National dealers, so they have a lot of high quality new instruments that Music Exchange doesn't stock.
Guitar Center at Elmwood Shopping Center is a part of a corporate behemoth, but a reality of life and they do carry some good new product and occasionally have some very cool high-end vintage pieces and other decent used stuff. Worth the trip to see what;s in stock, all though I definitely endorse supporting the locally owned stores first.
If you want, your friend can shoot me an e-mail and I will keep my ears open about people selling stuff privately.

Me, too. Sent some links to DV and I'll hear from him tonight about them. Just one more NOLA thing for him to get excited about. :D
Somebody told him about Acme Oysters yesterday. I think he's already got a JF vibe going on, because he's excited about the music and the food, and the order changes depending on how far off meal time is. :p

Have him try to hook up with a guitar player by the name of Chip Wilson (I don't have his contact info, but he plays a regular gig at the Columns - you could call the Columns to see when he plays there). He might have good contacts as to where your friend can get used guitars in NOLA - he fixes and (I think) also builds new guitars. Chip also plays at LMF sometime for in store performances - you could check out the instore schedules at louisianamusicfactory.com to see if he's scheduled there during Fest. I don't know if he has a website or not - could try googling his name.

I found out Chip Wilson's website address: jumpinsomethin.com
his e-mail address is: jumpinsomethin@aol.com
He used to build guitars, and may have some of his own for sale, or he might be a good connection for used, as he repairs (or used to - it's been several years since I've talked to him). His phone # is also listed on the website. and a Magazine street address.

Thanks, Charlotte. He can work on checking out Chip while I finish getting ready tonight. :)
