It was getting pretty crowded out there (for me), so we decided to go to the kid's tent to see Sunpie, one of my faves. Then I remember papafrog was going to be playing with him - lagniappe! :) There were several members of Sunpie's band and Morikembe, the kora player from Senegal, an amazing instrument, AND playing with them, on harmonica was Lee Oskar! Yes, that Lee Oskar. (If you don't know him, google him please.)

Awesome! I wish folks would show Lee some love- when he and the Lowriders (the original WAR) played at Ray's a couple years ago, the place wasn't half full. A shame because he may be the funkiest harp on the planet!

threadhead nation was there in force...so great to see everyone
at the kids tent....oz, stax, nymama, bionic bud, ibj, and several
others i cant remember now....about half hour be4 the set i ran into
sunpie and he says..o by the way....Lee Oskar is playing with us today...
i didnt have time to ask fest live to record us...i wish i had...
there was sunpies full band, with an additonal sax player, and trumpet
player i never met and sunpies son on trumpet.....
it was an honor 2 be on stage, and the set was killer with no rehearsal..
morikeba sang in an african dialect mandinka, and sunpie sang in creole...
the whole band just jelled behind sunpie and morikeba...
i didnt have time to be nervous.....
ive been a huge fan of lee oskar for a long time...and big fan or war...
he invited morikeba and i to his studio in seattle to do some music together...
the nicest guy, and very humble...

It was indeed a great set attended by many children, some of whom were the big threadhead kids. It was an amazing blend of different styles of musicians that worked great. Papafrog was thundering through the forest, and Sunpie's son was amazing on trumpet.

Saw Lee sitting in with Smoky Greenwell and his band at Cafe Negril on Frenchmen St. at like 4 AM Saturday night.
It's funny, I just saw War in Austin a couple weeks ago. Most of the original band plays as The Low Riders and that band has Lee. But the band I saw also had a harp player, who I mistakenly assumed was Lee until someone explained the whole situation to me.
He played great Saturday night. I thought he was playing a chromatic harp but was told he uses an effect to get the cool sound he was getting.
