I worked concessions for 16 teams for a track invitational. Beat to death but hitting a neighbors hot tub in a few. MY BACK IS KILLING ME. Ten hours of schlepping cases of drinks, LP tanks and selling hundreds of hot dogs and hamburgers. I am too old for this !!!! I hate it now but loved it then.

Kurt I need a hug!!!

Beautiful day. Warm but nice breezes most of the day and big, sun blocking, cooling clouds late. Good crowds but totally managebale. Highlights for me were Rebirth, Irma, John Mooney, Wilco and Johnny Winter's closing Highway 61. Saturday's JF "wow" moment came in the gospel tent during "The Annointed Jackson Singers" set. Holy...

- That is without a doubt the best Rolling Road Show set I've ever seen!
- The trout bacquet was the best thing I ate today
- Both John Mooney & Johnny Winter kicked ass in the blues tent
But by far & away the most moving set on the fairgrounds today was Pete Seeger. We were up front for him and he stood, sang, told stories & played the entire set. An amazing performance, made even more so by his age. The crowd spontaneously sang Happy Birthday to him & he looked touched. I cried during "This Land is Your Land". I had a total 60's flashback!
Another beautiful day on the grounds!

The highlight of the day was Paul's Rolling Road set - I think every TH was there! He had a great crowd. His book is selling like hotcakes in the Book Tent and we had to replenish the supply.

Warmer today - bigger crowds. But still a damn fine day.

Paul's RRS was the best I've seen....great, great set. The musicians he's playing with are so, so talented....Shamarr, Alex, Glen David, Sonia T., Mary L. and Andre Bohren (Spencer's son).

Also, I had a magic moment in the Book Tent during Paul's book signing....a woman came up to me and thanked the Threadheads for what we are doing....she has been a cancer patient for over a decade, and essentially said that when she heard about what the Threadheads were doing, that she felt "all is right in the world."

Pete Seeger was great (90 years old!). And the trout was awesome.

It's amazing... half the local folk I talk to are clueless, yet amazed at what we do. The others are tellingf ME about how wonderful Threadheads are!\

My Saturday review....

Got there a little late but in time for Paul's AWESOME set...one of best ever I think too. That was a great venue for him and the crowd was totally into it. Glen David's song was awesome and I felt like I was in the Gospel tent. The crowd was drinking in the Rolling Road Show and it was beautiful!!
Pigged out as usual and the food lines were definitely longer than Friday of course....certainly a bigger crowd.
Thought I'd catch a little of Pete Seeger just out of curiosity, and then some Dumpstaphunk. Well, we couldn't tear ourselves away from Pete Seeger....what a cool guy. He was so damn cute and sharp with his stories and humor and enthusiasm. His band was cool and did a great job. What a blast! I saw one of the band members several times around the Fest grounds after that having a good time.
Heard a bit of Galactic after that, with Shamarr sitting in which was a great surprise!
Then it was time for Pete Fountain....the tent was packed and the crowd was pouring out of all of the openings. He sounded great as always. I always go near a speaker outside and call my dad to let him listen to a couple of songs since he loves him but can't handle the Fair Grounds at his age. Dad's voice always breaks when we talk after a song finishes and I end up boo-hooing, but in a good way.
Planned to finish w/ James Taylor, who sounded great vocally, but then we got restless after a while and decided to go to Wilco. That plan was foiled when we got totally distracted and enthralled by Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers at the Fais do do stage. We stayed there till the end and had an amazing time! I never spend much time at that stage but so glad I did. Our 15 year old and her boyfriend had a blast there too. The crowd was a riot and the band was amazing....I've never seen people play the accordion and the washboard anything like they did.
I love Jazzfest!!

We enjoyed Paul and the Roadshow while downing a couple dozen on the half shell and some cold drafts, hanging out with Mr. and Ms. Festngator in the shade at the Lagniappe Stage - life just doesn't get much better than that! Festbabe, Pisces Girl, Jolie and JonnyGospelTent came by to say "hi" too...and we saw many other TH's in the crowd. Great set, enthusiastic crowd - a guy next to me who was apparently just there for the ersters asked me "Who ARE these guys" and when I told him he said he'd never heard of them, but "They're great!" which brought a big ol' smile to my face - one more convert!!

Two other highlights for me on Saturday were the Del McCoury Band - just some awesome straight-up bluegrass at the Fais Do Do - and Johnny Winter, who can still shred the axe even though he remained seated throughout the set. Great great set to close out day 2.

I heard reports that Wilco put on a great show too, although I didn't make it over there to hear them.....

My folks loved coming to New Orleans when I was a kid and they'd always talk about going to see Pete Fountain at his club on Bourbon Street - I'm sure there are still quite a few Pete LP's in my Mom's record collection. (I should probably get one of those turntable things that let you record onto a CD for some of her older stuff - they had quite the collection back in the day.)

We saw Pete play with Connie Jones at FQF last weekend - he looked a bit frail, but could still coax those sweet sweet sounds from his clarinet - he finished with "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" which was quite moving despite all the crowd chatter....

We started Saturday with the Gospel Tent celebration for Sherman Washington who started & headed up the Gospel Tent for many years. Sherman is in his 90s and it was a great tribute to great man. We then caught a few Zydeco songs at Fais Do Do by "Big Hat Man" Thomas Fields before catching the end of the Rolling Road Show and that was great! After filling my stomache we caught most of the Rebirth/Kermit show...very packed!! Next was Irma Thomas and she was was rocking! Headed to the Blues Tent for 2nd row seats for John Mooney and closed the day with a awesome set by Dwayne Dopsie at Fais Do Do.......

Great day.....pretty large crowd.....highlights were the Rolling Road Show (what a line-up!) and Dwayne's set at the end. My wife called it "In your face Zydeco"...I call it excellent.
