Ever sense Diana Krall’s song “you don’t know me” with Ray Charles came out, I’ve been in love with her music. Im excited about her new album Quiet Nights. Good news for the Jazz world if you ask me. I heard the songs on imeem before I bought the CD. Here is the link if anyone wants to check it out http://www.imeem.com/dianakrall/playlist/NT5rWDXx/quiet-nights-music-playlist/
What do you guys think about her? umgd

Hey Jane! I was just listening to her "Live in Paris" CD yesterday, and although I was never a big fan, I have to give her a lot of credit. First, she's Canadian and that works for me. Second, I find her very attractive (in a bad girl kind of way), and that works too. Last, she's married to the most awesome Elvis Costello, and that speaks volumes.
(I was actually trying to picture what that dating conversation might have been like, and it made me smile.)
With that said, I could never really figure out what all the fuss was about. To me, she always just sounded like a well-publicized lounge singer; no better and no worse than anyone you might hear at the lounge at the Airport Ramada. Yesterday, however, I realized that she is MUCH better than that...
Yeah, she's sexy and yeah, she can sing, but she's also a very good piano player and the combination of all of those things is great. Her stuff is recorded really well, and it is just PERFECT for the right time and place!

This is the second time this week we've had one of these. Either spambots are getting smarter or these are real live people who come on here just to promo a CD. Check out this poster, short comments that say nothing on every post in this section and a promo. The other day we had the promo one. Real posters don't join the board and immediately try to sell an album direct with a link. So, yes, this is sophisticated spam

Well, I'll give her credit for not being obsessed with looks.....
I've always had it in for that guy since back in the 70s when Bonnie Bramlett punched him out for saying Ray Charles was a "blind, ignorant, n&*%er"
OK, allegedly he was drunk & all these other musicians were giving him a hard time about being a Brit, so he was trying to piss them off... I guess it worked

Ya, I can forgive him for the Ray thing, but he's got great taste in women (as breath taking as she is, she's still got more talent then looks). Check out his TV show "Spectacle". Last night was Nora & Kris K. I want them to get together for a tour. As far as his (Elvis) goofy looks.......it's his schitck !!!

Man, I've been wanting to catch that show for the past couple of weeks, and I think I just might have set my PVR for it yesterday. It looks terrific, and I'm thrilled to see that CTV is carrying it up here!

By the way, back to the original post, I listened to some samples from that new Diana Krall CD and (in my opinion) it is complete CRAP.
The thing is called "Quiet Nights" and I was really expecting (and hoping for) a laid back, Norah Jones like solo album, but it's anything but that. It has a ton of syrupy violins all over it, and it sounds like something Percy Faith, James Last or Bert Keampert would crank out. Just gawdawful. I wish her well with this monstrosity, but she's set her "jazz credibility" back to well beyond zero with this nightmare...

I liked her early albums and had never seen her live, so I bought tickets to a show she has coming here in August (Davies Hall--nice setting). The I got the Live in Paris DVD and the new CD and was pretty disappointed with both. She plays well and with a great band and is definitely easy on the eyes. Her voice is fine, but it seems to me that she doesn't give the music a lot of soul. Nice package, not much inside.
By the way, I could never understand any fanfare for Elvis Costello. Just don't get it. Can't sing, can't play, songs are not all that much. JMHO.

Ross, I missed this last night because of the hockey game, but have it TIVO'ed at home. Although I did hear an audio excerpt of Roseanne Cash's contribution on CKUA and it was so good. I am a huge Roseanne Cash fan.
I think the thing with Elvis is that he dabbles in so many genres and even when he's in one genre (punk let's say) he stands out as doing something a little bit out of the box, pulling in influences. So on last week's Spectacle, I believe it was Sting who said that Elvis' songwriting (Alison) in the punk era was far from the punk sensibility of simply learning two chords and bashing away on them.
PS: on the first episode, it was Elton John and Elvis and none other than Allen Toussaint on piano supporting them both. Fantastic!
I've seen Elvis four or five times, doing everything from the Attractions revival to the piano-based material with Steve Nieve to the shows with Mr. Toussaint. The show has never been the same and it has always demanded a bit more of the audience to accept some of his forays into other worlds. I like that.
That's my two cents on Elvis.
As for Diana, she's sort of an "entry" act for a lot of people into that kind of jazz style. She's a bit packaged, I'll admit.
Like all things musical, each to their peach. I don't own any Diana Krall and while I own some Elvis, I don't often listen to them. I prefer seeing Elvis live, much more interesting for me.

And I'm one of those who LOVES Elvis Costello's voice. It's so unique (and not in a Neil Young kind of way), and he's dabbled in so many types of music. Each to their peach, indeed!

Ross, I never thought her act could translate to the Gentilly stage, of all places, but I happened to be walking by the stage last JF right before her set started and thought I'd catch a few songs before moving on. Well I have to tell you, I was absolutely TRANSFIXED. It was a gorgeous day after the rain, with a warm breeze, and I sat myself down in someone's empty chair and it was one of those magical moments. Diana was incredible. She had great musicians backing her up, her piano playing was superb, and I was simply blown away. I stayed the entire set and could have listened for another hour or two.

Yikes -- sounds awful. Can't stand a jazz singer with lots of strings. I have one of her CD's that contains terrible arrangements and mediocre material and I can't even listen to it. Yet, as I mentioned in my previous post, her set last year at Gentilly was sublime. Everything worked -- the material, the musicians, the time of day, the weather, New Orleans, Jazzfest, not too crowded ...

That's great, Leni! I love it when a "Jazzfest Moment" comes together like that...the perfect synchronicity of weather, music, time of day, etc. I had a very similar "moment" a few years back when Michael Ward played the Gentilly stage with his electric violin.
It was one of those perfect Jazzfest days (aren't they all?), earlier in the day (around 1:30) and really warm. I sat down on the grass, then just reclined onto my back and watched the whispy clouds sail by overhead as the sound of this guy's electric violin just washed over me. At one point, he did a version of "You've got a friend" and it was amazing. I recall looking to my left and seeing this woman right beside me (who was obviously captured by the same spell), so I smiled and jokingly said: "Do you wanna make out?" Believe it or not, she said "sure!" and the two of us started going at it like a couple of high school kids. At the end of the song, she simply stood up and smiled, dusted off the dirt and straw from her dress and said "have a wonderful day at the Fest!" as she walked off into the crowd headed around the track...
Unbelievable.

Well Leni, that's just MY opinion, and it's possible that others might absolutely love it, but you should check out the album nonetheless for yourself. Dig it up on Itunes and listen to some samples...you'll see what I mean. I just think that she's become so big in that jazz sector that they just can't leave well enough alone; they likely wouldn't allow her to just do a solo album of just piano and voice, or at the very least, something really stripped down. There must be 20 violins backing every track on this thing - it's ain't pretty!

Same here. Not so much into smooth jazz, with some reservations, but I was surprised and enjoyed her set.
