I'm looking at the Grids and seeing "Papa Grows Funk with Junco Pardners feat. John "Papa" Gros, Brian Stoltz, Tony Hall, June Yamagishi and Terence Higgins" on Wednesday night at the Maple Leaf. I can't find any other listing of this show, nor any way to buy tickets. Anyone know where this listing came from, and how to get tickets? I haven't been to the Maple Leaf yet, and it's far overdue.

I am no PROFESSIONAL...like Swag is, but I have been to the Maple Leaf at least 5 times in the past 2 fests and I am not aware of any way to prebuy tickets. It is a fairly good sized place and has never sold out to my knowledge. I will be there on monday night for Papa Grows Funk!!!

We saw Papa Grows Funk on Sat night. They sounded great. John kept saying "JazzFest has Begun!" and the crowd would cheer.
I spoke with June and he told me that he is only playing one show with the Wild Magnolias. The Fairgrounds show on Sunday. No Wild Mags night shows (yet). He will be playing with Papa Grows Funk and others all over town during Fest though.

The Maple Leaf does sell out on occassion, but if you get there within an hour or so of the starting time -- it should be ok. If it does sell out, and you hang around, they will eventually let you in as others leave.

FYI, if you are looking for dinner in the area before that show, Jacques-Imo's right next door to the Leaf is very good. There is a crazy wait oftentimes, especially during Fest, but if you go there with the mindset to hang out and have some pops either at the Leaf or just while hanging out in the street while you wait, it can be a very good time and meal. Dinner at Jacques-Imo's followed by a show at the Leaf is always a great two-fer imo.

We'll be heading to this show as well. I also haven't been able to find any other listings for it - anybody know anything else about the show & who's playing?

This should be a wild sucka for sure!!!

Papa Gros, Brian Stoltz and June Yamagishi all together!?!?

I was thinking about Meglomaniacs Ball, but this may be even more to my tastes........

So much FUNK, but only one thirsty "mormon" (decisions, decisions)

Only problem is that the Leaf does git mighty crowded for Fest shows; do you all think it will be a full house, or will the throngs flock to Meglomaniacs instead?

I saw them play together at the Balcony last August during Satchmofest. Awesome show! It's going to be sick with them and then Jon Cleary & AMG's
around 10pm! I'm there!

I thought I remember that it was near, but since my friend was always driving, I was not sure.....

Would it be safe to walk from Maple Leaf to Southport after dark?

MormonMatthew

On second thought , forget it......

I will be on my own, and there is no point in taking chances---I will call a cab.

Thanks Jenn!

Cabbing it would be best. The couple of blocks on Oak St. would prolly be ok, but there's a dark, hinky turn toward Southport that I wouldn't walk.

Cool, probably because I forgot to put in the quote. It's closer to 1/2 a mile from door to door, but still not advisable

Do you mean you might know someone who likes George, Russ, Ian and Ivan AND the subdudes?????

I guess great minds DO think (and drink) alike!!!

PS Deni, what are your krewes plans before funky Meters at CAC?

There are several of us from the board who will want to be front and center---maybe we can all meet up for beers somewhere before the hoodoo-boogie?

That Junco Partners show was our first "in ink" addition to our seriously frantic table'o'fest'in goodness. Our newbies will get the whole deal on that Wednesday: LMF in-stores, Algiers ferry, Rosetreefest, Marcia Ball, dinner at a suspiciously close place to the finale (maybe!) at the Leaf. The sidewalk & road work should be fixed by then - can anyone verify this?

And June only working one gig at the Fairgrounds? Hard to believe that's true... what with Henry Butler, Wild Mag's, PGF, etc... I'll look for him at IAC & the last Sunday Dumpstaphunk - unbelievable solo he took with the band last year!

i'm pretty certain i read the Oak street repairs will not be complete for quite some time. but the businesses are open, and maybe gives more room to party in the street?

Hey Duende. June told me that the only Wild Magnolias show that he is playing is the one at the fairgrounds. He isn't signed on yet to play any Wild Mags night shows. He will certainly be playing with Papa Grows Funk and many others both at clubs and the fairgrounds. Sorry about any confusion.

Added 4/14

5/2 removing George Porter Jr., Russell Batiste, Ian and Ivan @ Maple Leaf 7:30pm private event NOT open to the public - NOOOOOO!

Anybody know who's party this is and how some very cool threadheads could be invited?

To me the classic Maple Leaf gig is Rebirth Brass Band Tuesday.
Good ole days? James Booker used to play every Tues or Wed.; plus you could actually do your laundry while listening to one of the greatest piano geniuses ever.... they had a lil one machine landromat in back

Hello everyone. First post, glad I found this site, tons of info. I have been to jazz fest a couple years now but have yet to go to the maple leaf. I am planning on going thursday night to see johnny v, george porter, and skerik at 11. Will it be really crowded there that night? I heard it gets extremely crowded during the weekends and was just wondering about this. Thanks!

I would guess that the Maple Leaf will fill up for this show. Crowded clubs are a fact of life during Jazzfest. That's not a bad thing!
