Hey,

I'm bringing a double virgin (never been to NOLA or to JF) this year. Any tips on making sure he falls in love with both NOLA and JF?

Does he have taste buds? Does he like music? Then just let it be.... and he'll be addicted....

You can't force it on someone- they get it or they don't. All you can do is get them to go...

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!!

I fed him a muffaletta over the weekend and he liked it. He also does sound at a Cajun restaurant about once a month and he eats the food (which is really, really good Cajun food).

Our first date was to see Sonny Landreth and the second was to The Holmes Brothers. I think he'll be able to deal with the music. :) We also have R'n'B on the list for second Sunday.

We went over the JF wardrobe yesterday. I told him shorts & tees for the day, and nicer but not fancy at night. Guys, will that description work for male attire?

Does anybody know if there are any open blues jams in the NOLA area at JF time? We are going to go to Phil Brady's in BR on Thursday night for that jam and to meet some friends. He wants to sit in if they'll let him.

shorts & tees usually work at night too, which is a good thing since that's all I pack. My only rule is to not wear anything that actually says 'New Orleans' on it (which is actually pretty difficult for me since most of my t-shirts are from the fest).

Unless you are going to dinner -- ther is no reason for long pants -- also a change of shoes is essential -- both for reasons of mud and comfort. I sometimes wear swim trunks and a tank or tee to JF and nicer shorts and short sleeve collared shirt out at night. Again, foot comfort is most important if you plan on making it to the late night shows -- if you can't stand, you can't dance; and if you can't dance you can't truly enjoy the music.

Hope you both have a blast!

Good supportive Shoes at night!! After the wear and tear on the feet at fest, and then having to stand to see the music during the night, comfy, supportive shoes are critical!!

Gotta be careful thinking like that - you might be too old or sick to dance some day, but that doesn't mean you still can't enjoy the tunes!

Dancing, standing, sitting, or laying face down in the mud...it's all good.

I've got three (as far as I know) double virgins coming this year (sister and two of her friends). Katie had so much fun last year that I'm pretty sure my sis will "get it", don't know her friends, so we'll see on them, but it's always fun to bring newbies!!

We have two young double virgins coming second weekend. I was so disappointed that Alex didn't love it last year... so no expectations this this time. They'll arrive and either love it or not. Big commitment for the young ones to come all the way from OZ (these younguns are doing it under their own steam) so... we'll see.

Six grandkids and a thousand nieces and nephews so eventually... hopefully.

We've got 2 coming this year and we're all staying in the same place, so they'd BETTER love it! ;) Seriously, tho', I'm looking forward to seeing familiar things/places thru the eyes of our 1st-timers... Cafe Dumonde, O'Brien's, maybe Louis I cemetary, Dr. Bob's signs, the kooky gold & silver guys (even tho' they are ubiquitous in tourist cities now), slowing down while walking down Royal instead of just hustling to the next music stop, in other words all of the experiences that won us over on our first couple of trips that we've pretty much taken for granted in recent years. They'll talk about this trip for years to come!

I'm going to try to start the trip off right. We get in on 4/29 at about 9AM. I want to go get our tix at the Superdome and then head to the FQ for some breakfast, probably at Cafe DuMonde.

I'm very glad for the one. Grace and peace to the other. New Orleans is a very sensual earthy place. It kinda requests active participation. Merely to observe would be kind of an odd experience.

It invites people to dance freely, eat with their hands, hug strangers, discover new music, and to play and celebrate into the night.

There are a lot of people that would be overwhelmed by this as much as we are drawn to it. There is one thing I know for sure. If they meet any threadhead, they will, at the very least, be welcomed and treated as family.

Meeting up with someone 2nd weekend that is the opposite of a virgin. He has not been to JF in 24 years. I plan to have him email me with his thoughts on all of the changes since the 80s.

As a former double virgin, this will be my fourth Fest in a row. I was hooked before hitting the fair grounds when my krewe took me on a trip thru the quarter. Started at Acme's for the oysters (fresh and grilled-The Best IMHO) and Abitas, O'brien's for the hurricanes, a number of other clubs, and ended at LaFitte's for more hurricanes.

Don't forget Mothers for the morning kick start!

Bring him to Coops for a bloody mary and a hangtown omelette. I don't think they open until 11 but it's a great breakfast.

Oh, we'll be hitting Coops, for sure!!!!

I took him Jazz Fest shopping yesterday. That was a blast! We got him a straw hat, 2 pairs of shorts and a tropical shirt with palm trees on it. As we were leaving the store, we saw the sidewalk sale and stocked up on $1 - $2 Hanes beefy tees for the trip. :D

After the shopping spree, I printed out the cubes so that he could highlight who he wants to see. He's so excited, and it's really fun to watch him morph into a fester.
