I know this comment is going to open up a whole can of worms :) but I still don't know how you can fest all day and then make it to a show every night! I'm usually lucky if I make it out to one night show per weekend and if I have enough energy to even attempt a 2nd to 3rd weekend excursion, I'm fried!
Power to all the hard-core Jazzfesters out there... I envy your energy!

I only have ONE night show planned second weekend and that is all. The rest of the time I'm riding the breeze.

Oh, my night show is Toubab Krewe at Blue Nile Sat. night and I already have my ticket. :)

As has been said many times, it's a marathon, not a sprint. I generally don't drink during the day; maybe one beer at most. I just stay hydrated and well-fed and try to see as much music as I can. Then back to the room, shower and some beers, then dinner and whatever night show(s) are on the agenda. Never nap after Fest, or you are sure to miss the night shows.

Oh yes....I've learned that too well. Napping = waking up in a daze at 2am thinking "AAAAAAAH! What have I done?!?!?!?" Although it always seems like such a good idea at the time! ;)

right there w/ ya' Mega! We try our best, but are too old to go all out.
So far, right now, we're just looking at two shows.
Thursday night - Sanchez @dba (maybe a later show if we're not too worn out from flying)
Saturday night - Rock-n-Bowl for Bonerama, Lindell & Kermit
Rarely do a Sunday night show because flights are always early on Monday.
Belle - YOU ARE AN ANIMAL! Are you really hitting ALL those shows????

YYR, lit. Mega, I'm not much of a drinker so that helps. Truth is if i go late night, I have to have my energy supplements! Surely couldn't keep up the pace without them. And this winter I discovered the joy of jaeger bombs! Wooohoooooooooooo! I can sleep when i get home!!!!!!
And ya know, since we are staying on Frenchmen again this year, it's really hard to leave the fun and go lie down.

We arrive back home Monday early and the kids wont be home until 5:30 so we will sleep then. Four days isn't that hard.

We dont drink at fest and that surely helps. Monday may not be possible but sure will try.

Mr. and Mrs J Rich will be extremely busy at night 2nd weekend.

Thursday - Galactic on the boat. 8:15pm. (ticketed) Then late night with Umphrey's McGee at the House of Rules.

Friday - Joe Krown, Walter "wolfman" Washington, and Russell Batiste @ DBA 8pm. Then Umphrey's McGee @ HOB 2am.

Saturday - Toubab Krewe @ Blue Nile 10pm. Then Bustle in Your Hedgerow @ Tips FQ @ 2am or U-Melt @ Blue Nile @ 2am if we don't feel like moving on to the quarter.

If we make it to 75% of these I'll be happy...50% is probably realistic. I'm going to have to buy a gross of that 5 Hour Energy.

That's got to be it...no drinking during the day. I'm cringing as I write that. Maybe just one bloody at Liuzza's and a beer every hour? I'll try. ;)
Want to make at least a few night shows! Staying mid-week helps. Time to re-energize between weekends. If I were staying on Frenchman....I think I'd feel the same, funk. One of these years - I'll stay there. What a great area!

Matthew, it is possible. Either subdudes or the Radiators at Southport.
When the subdues played Houston a month ago they played in a small venue. Capacity of the Mucky Duck is 110 with 20 sro spots. The subdudes are at their best in a small venue. The Southport would be the place to see them.

8am for 5 of the 7 days. I enjoy getting out there early before the crowds.

I never make the late shows, One more reason to love Rock n Bowl is that their shows start early, drop of any of the crew that has had enough and the rest move on!

Radiators and Meters and Subdudes---Oh My!!!!

I will be going with my tried and true favorites again, as my Jazzfest would not be complete without the music of these home-grown New Orleans greats.........

--------

Thursday 4/30---Radiators annual SNAFU show at Southport (always wild-freaks ahoy)

Friday 5/1---funky Meters at the CAC....... (certainly not a great venue but Art Neville and George Porter are the very definition of New Orleans Funk!!!)

Saturday 5/2---Subdudes and John Gros at Southport (my favorite spot for live music during Fest, and of course the 'Dudes harmonies are sublime)

Sunday 5/3---Zigaboo, George Porter, Stanton Moore at Howlin' Wolf which is always an all-star funk blowout to end Fest on a "high" note with...........

Hope to see you all out and about, and make sure to come on up and say Hey (Now)!!!

I agree with some of the responses that the best way to have energy at night is try and take it easy at the fairgrounds, but that is sometimes easier said than done. We usually make things even harder by going for a big meal in the Quarter before the night shows. But since I truly believe that it is not even close how much better the musical performance are at night, I find ways to ensure I don't give in to lack of sleep, sun exposure and gluttonous eating and drinking.

1) I skip Thursday at the Fairgrounds unless there is something I really have to see
2)Thursday night I go to just one night show so I can make Friday my early day there where I can wonder around and take it all in without being too concerned about what I have circled on the grids.
3) I try to get up early on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the hotel and get a sweat, nothing crazy, maybe just a half hour bike ride, or quick jog on the river to make me feel better
4) Stimulants! After dinner, when I am wondering how I am going to make it to two or three shows, I drink at least two cups of coffee, and then begin my night with at least two redbull vodkas, last year my buddy with ADD gave me a half dozen ritalins as well. This year I think I may substitute that five hour energy that they are selling in CVS and Walgreens, seems like a perfect elixir for Jazzfest (at least until they come out with the 24 hour version!), hopefully without some of the side effects the two previous ones can bring with them!
5) Sleep- Saturday and Sunday mornings, I sleep till noon and don't make it over the Fairgrounds until 2 or so after a proper breakfast at Petunia. Mother's, or best of all the Palace Cafe for breakfast and some bloody mary's. Then I am ready to do it again. I don't know how you harder core festers make it without any sleep, that is one thing that would render all the rest of my tactics useless.

Thurs - Grayson Capps @ dba 10:00(definite); then Midnite Disturbers @ Colton; then Lettuce @ Howlin Wolf or Eric McFadden Trio @ Balcony

Fri- NO Bingo Show @ Le Chat 8:00; then Juice @ Banks Street 11:00; then R Scully & the rough Seven @ Le Bon Temps 2:30 (bummed to be missing Franti and Kirk on the boat)

Sat - Brother Joscepthus & Love Revival Orchestra @ Banks Street 9:00 (never heard of them, but love the possibility); then Bonerama/Lindell/Kermit @ Rock N' Bowl; then a huge dilemma between New Mastersounds @ HOB or Lez Zepelin @ HOB Parish or Bustle in Your Hedgerow @ Tips Quarter 2:00

Sun Tin Men @ dba 8:00; then Dumpstaphunk @ Tps (ticketed); would love to catch Quintron & Miss Pussycat @ Saturn; Eric Lindell @ One-Eyed Jacks, or Bonerama @ Maple Leaf

Everyone is different -- my recipe is
DRINKING AT FEST: drink at fest, but stop around 5:30 if possible. Also, be sure to drink 1 water for every 3 beers.
DINNER -NEVER go out to dinner - I can't tell you how many friends I've heard say, "we meant to go out, but the service was slow and by the time we were done with dinner, we were too dead to go out."
NAPPING - Nap whenever yu get the chance 8-10 is always helpful when the music schedule permits (also during the daze between). Make plans, buy tickets, or do whatever it takes to get to the club -- once you are there, you almost never regret it.
REMEMBER - You can sleep on the plane, when you get home, etc...
ALSO REMEMBER - if you need to take a night off - do it -- there is plenty more music tomorrow.

As for late shows, for us it was just years of building up to it. We used to always go back to the room, get comfy, take a nap, and miss many shows that way.

We just built up to being able to do it. You've got to go back to the room to drop stuff off, but don't stay there! Take a rinse off in the pool instead of the warm, sleepy shower. Long sit down dinners can be killer too. Keep the buzz going . . . We always drank plenty at fest, get something to go back to the hotel to keep rolling, down to bourbon for a hurricane or hand grenade, etc.

I'm really going to have to get back into practice whenever our first post-kids fest is!!

Thu: Shamarr/Sanchez @DBA, then Cyril etc. @ Tip's FQ
Fri: George Clinton & P-Funk @ Republic
Sat: OUCH-Subdudes @ Southport OR Lindell, Bones, Kermit @ Rock & Bowl?
Sun: Tab & Sonny @ Rock & Bowl

Tue 4/28: Eddie Bo Benefit @ Rock & Bowl w/ Dr. John, Marcia Ball, etc...no buzz 'bout this show??

Amazed myself last year by raging till the wee hours 11 out of 12 nights, plus weekend festing. Hope I've got that stamina this year (or I've wasted $ on tix). Eating every few hours & lots of water is key.

Anyone have a sense that any of the night shows (second weekend, in particular) will sell out this year? Obviously with the economy, it's less likely this year, I'm just not sure how less likely.

I don't remember a year when so little sold out this close to fest. I guess the maybe-Buffett show at Margaritaville is sold out, and I think I saw one of the RnB shows had ceased advance tix (though they usually save some for door sales. AFAIK, that's it, and if so, that's very unusual.

The Riverboats are usually sellouts, and Preservation Hall is so small that it also often sells out. If either of those were on my list, I'd get tix now. Otherwise, unless it was a show my heart was set on, I'd maybe wait.

Anyone have a sense that any of the night shows (second weekend, in particular) will sell out this year? Obviously with the economy, it's less likely this year, I'm just not sure how less likely.

and of course shows can still sell out just a few people in front of you in line

i think the weather can affect how many folks are up for night shows. if its been a very hot & sticky day at the fest, some peeps will just be exhausted and not up for more hours of standing & sweating.
if the weather is really crap, some people skip the fest or leave early (horrible i know, but it happens). i think they are more likely to go out that night.

it sure seems like a weird year.........hotel prices are falling...and no or very few night shows selling out...the economy must be taking a toll on the traveling folks............i just booked my hotel...for the first weekend four nights...still waiting on the second...will just make three nights for second

WHAT is the word on Buffett playing Margaritaville??? This is the first I've heard of it.

I'd guess that both Galactic and Franti on the boat will sell out -- Galactic/Greyboy/Rebirth on Sat at Howlin' Wolf might also sell out -- The Preservation Hall show Sat at midnight should sell out -- Dumpstaphunk at Tips on Sunday surely will sell out -- I'm not sure of the Colton shows -- don't know the capacity or if people will flock to a new place, but if some of those shows were on Frenchman, they would go.

The Studio At Colton at 2300 St. Claude Avenue, is a post-Katrina grass-roots conversion project of an old public school. Through the sweat of the residents, classrooms have been renovated into artist studios space and there is public assembly space including a 1000 capacity theater with a large built-in stage. It has a large open space in front of the stage and some theatre style seating toward the back. The Prospect 1 International Art Biennial featured some events and exhibits there and it is where Krewe du Vieux held their Mardi Gras Ball this year. It is located on the burgeoning St. Claude arts corridor that has generated a good bit of development interest from the artistic and real estate communities. It is walking distance from famed Frenchmen Street and on a major bus line (and 1 block from the Hi-Ho Lounge).

New to the board, but not new to fest.

My theory is that once you start drinking (unless it is just an occassional beer), you can't stop and then start back up again without hitting a real low. So you either have to not drink at the fest, again unless it is just a beer here and there, or drink at the fest and keep it goin all night with the occasional water. If you stop you are done. Redbul and other stimulants are a factor, but they also increase the hurt the next day IMO.

Thursday - up in the air - Sanchez at DBA, Soul Rebles, the Trio??????? Depends. I may make this my none music night.

Friday - Funky Meters or George Clinton - Shorty late night.

Saturday - Galactic, Greyboy, Rebirth

Sunday - R&B Sonny and Tab (I was totaly set on this show, but with Susan and Friends at HOB that could factor in, although I don't like HOB). If it is at old R&B I will definetly be at this show. Could it be the last show there?

You have some great choices to decide from John---I will say that there are several Threadheads who are planning on meeting up for the subdudes/Papa Gros Southport show on saturday 5/2........

You would be welcome to come along with us, and share a cab ride.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is also a large group of us going to the funky Meters show at CAC on 5/1---We will probably meet up for beers before the show, and then walk on down to Camp St. together.

Feel free to get in touch if your plans work out to include these shows!!!

Last year SNAFU tickets were sold at the door of Southport on the night of the show......

Anyone with 50 buck$ in pocket to spend was "invited" to the "private party".

(though in years past, when they held SNAFU at Tipitinas, and space was more limited or crowd demand for admission was higher you actually did need an invitation)

That said, anyone who loves the Radiators should check out a SNAFU gig. Three full sets of amazing New Orleans music, and as wild a time as anything you will ever see at Fest!!!

I've talked my large and ever growing group of Festers who will be with me second weekend (we may be sleeping on top of each other, but that's another thread) to do Porter/Bastiste/Neville/Neville at the Leaf immediately after Jazzfest that Saturday, followed by the subdudes at Southport.

But, if we get comfortable at the Leaf, and that's entirely possible, we may hang for Jon Cleary.

Whatever, it's all good. I've been holding back some, but even I'm starting to spinnnnnnnn now! Just a little more than a week away!!!

Dag, if its still open I will see you for both the PBNN set at the Leaf and also subdudes at Southport.....

However, someone earlier in the day (dont know which thread) said that the Porter set at Maple Leaf is now being billed as a "private party".

I dont know how this will end up shaking out, but if it turns out right WHAT A NIGHT!!!

George, Ian, Ivan and Russ, followed by Papa Gros opening up for the subdudes....... It is a dream line-up night for anyone who loves the music of New Orleans!!!

Hopefully we can get some info on the private event aspect of the Porter show, and I look forward to sharing a cold one with you----- Matthew

I am a firm believer in "where there is a will there is a way" and if the Porter set really starts at 7:30 there isnt gonna be too many who will be motivated enough to make it to the Leaf that soon after Fest lets out.......

stretching the definition of "second weekend" a bit:

Mon: Sir Lattimore Brown at Banks Street Bar

Tue and Wed: Ponderosa Stomp

Thu: I was thinking of the New Orleans Bingo show at Tips or Tom McDermott/Evan Christopher at Donna's or zydeco night at the new R 'n B, but since I'm staying downtown, I might instead check out the Promised Land swamp pop film screening. If I actually can stay awake I'd love to see Lil Band O' Gold at Chicky-Wah-Wah but I'm not sure that'll happen.

Fri: Swamp pop with Aaron Foret at a truck stop in Westwego

Sat: nothing scheduled, will likely just see whoever is at Fritzel's or Lionel Ferbos at the Palm Court.

Sun: Walter Wolfman Washington/Joe Krown/Russell Batiste at the Maple Leaf

Sat - Man this is a serious FOMS day for me! I have no idea which one I'll choose at this point:

As has been said many times, it's a marathon, not a sprint. I generally don't drink during the day; maybe one beer at most. I just stay hydrated and well-fed and try to see as much music as I can. Then back to the room, shower and some beers, then dinner and whatever night show(s) are on the agenda. Never nap after Fest, or you are sure to miss the night shows.

Exactly how I do it.

It is entirely possible to stay hydrated while drinking beer in the day, and go out to night shows with plenty of energy. it depends on how much stamina you have :-) how well rested you are before starting the weekend, what kind of fitness you are in, tolerance to imbibing alcohol beverages, etc etc. I love nothing more than to 'crack' open the first Urquell (or this year Blue Moon) within the first hour of arriving to fairgrounds, and continuing at a reasonable steady but-not-overdoing it pace throughout the day, along with plenty of water. The great thing about beer over hard liquor is you tend to reach a saturation point where you can't drink anymore well before you are too drunk, at least for me out there, there is a lot of calorie burning if you walk around a lot. i realize thought that y'all are just saying and sharing your technique/strategy/method wisdom which is good. however, there are others who consume in day and night and have no problem with energy...

Never said it wasn't possible. Many in my krewe do it that way, including some who start with Bloodies before even hitting Fest and drink beer and liquor all day and night, and into the early morning. It has nothing to do with fitness, stamina or tolerance for me; I'm fine on all fronts, but I just generally don't like to drink too much during the day--especially in the heat. I did have a few Blue Moons at Fest on a few of the days this year, but not steady consumption throughout the day. If I get going at a steady pace in the heat I find it harder to slow down, and I don't like the feeling of being buzzed in the hot sun. On the day of the patry, however, with a better beer selection and more cloud cover for most of the day, I had no problem going at a steady clip for about 13 hours, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

With or without beer, hydration is the key.

as one who tends to go hard day and night at fest,.. your post hits home on a few points..... i do try to adhere to a 10 hour rule though,... nothing but good things (to be sure,.. a fried eggplant w/ crawfish sauce breakfast easily qualifies) in the system until 10 hours after the last bad boy behavior....

i do know this though,... this year,.. i woke up screamin' in pain three mornin's out of eight,.. due to massive charlie horses in my hamstrings... once the un"bear"able pain came to a merciful end,... i did take notice that particular excruciatin' experience does serve as a great hangover cure......

personally,.. i drink more water in new orleans than any other time of the year... hammer down at least three bottles before enterin' the gates.... two with a healthy dose of those vita c packets....

next year,.. i've been advised to avoid that horsin' around thing,.. i should add a banana to the day's menu...

so many ways to end this post after that mention  ,... bu i'll just say how many days until the next fest begins???.... let the countdown begin...
