I am not much of a night person these days. The only night show I think I have attended was Piano Night, which I have done a couple of times, and would highly recommend for the experience. However, since I don't know how many more Fests I will be attending,( I may go to Macchu Picchu next June which would probably preclude my attending Fest), I am thinking of hitting one of the historic joints in town that I have heard so much about, Donna's, Tipatana's, Maple Leaf Bar etc on one evening of 2nd weekend. Any suggestions?

Yeppers..What is your preference on music? Do you want to stand or sit? That would help. You like the tents at fest right? Jazz man, no?

I just checked out the grids to offer a few suggestions but there are great shows every night at each of those venues. I would spread it out and do 1 venue per night. Early shows start around 10pm (or so they say) and if your not up for staying out too late just catch the first set and be on your way.
Belle's suggestion of seeing what you like on the grids will be your best indicator.

On Thursday night you could catch Evan Christopher and Tom McDermott at Donna's at 9 pm for a relatively early and fairly mellow night show. They are great--you have probably seen McDermott at Piano Night, and Christopher is an oustanding clarinet player.

On Friday you might consider the Contintental Drifters at Carollton Station; should be an outstanding show, with lots of ThreadHeads in attendance.

On Saturday I would definitely go see the Subdudes with John Gros at Southport Music Hall. Perhaps not an historic venue, but by all accounts a great and comfortable one. And I've yet to meet anyone who didn't absolutely love the Subdudes.

On Sunday, Joe Krown and Walter Wolfman Washington are at the Maple Leaf. Krown is a Hammond B-3 master, and Walter is a near-legendary New Orleans funk and bluesman (guitar and vocal) with some of the nattiest threads you'll ever see.

Others to consider: Rock 'n' Bowl on any night; Tipitina's on Saturday for the Radiators; Maple Leaf on Friday for 101 Runners + Johnny Sketch.

I figured the Evan Christopher/Tom McDermott show would satisfy a trad jazz craving, and Donna's should be a great venue for them, even though it is the home of the brass bands. I figured the Nightcrawlers midnight show there on Saturday would be the best call overall, but it sounds to me like Terry's not talking about late, late shows.

Those would be among my likely choices if I was going to be there second weekend. Since I'm a first weekender this year, they are ones I can enjoy vicariously only.

If you prefer an early show, Kemit Ruffins gets started around 8pm on second Saturday at the Rock n Bowl. A most unique venue not to be missed!

Hey Now Terry......

Dont know much about your music tastes, but I think a good bet for you would be the Thur. 4/30 Cyril Neville-Tab Benoit-Wild Magnolias gig at Tipitinas French Quarter, which is a 5 min. walk from your hotel (you are at the Hilton also, correct?)

Not only is the show gonna SMOKE, but its practically across the street from your hotel, all for only 20 bucks!!!

Its also early in the week, so if you go, and end up really enjoying yourself and getting a bad case of the ol' hoodoo boogie-stomp fever, you will still be able to hit other shows later in the week......

Just my 2 cents, but it would certainly be an option for you.

I am usually in the sack by 9 pm, so late, late shows would be a bit much.
9-12 midnight would probably do it for me

Sun night might be best, as I don't fly home until Tue 5/5, and could sleep late on MON.

Must say I like the idea of being one block from hotel, and the $20 part is cool also. Just might do it. Plus I have not been to Tipitana's. Can you buy tickets at the door or is it advisable to buy them ahead of time, and if so, can you do it at their box office?

oops. 5 minute walk from hotel, not necessarily one block, but it's close anyway.

Terry, the Tipitinas French Quarter venue is not huge, so a sellout is certainly a possibility; that being said, thursday night shows tend to have smaller crowds than a friday or saturday evening set would have, and also, ticket sales for all the night shows across the board seem to be down, at least compared to in years past (last year at this time many night shows were already sold out).

If your heart is set on a specific show, buying early is a good idea, but if you are flexible and will be happy going with the flow, waiting until Fest to decide is probably the best bet.........

Whatever you end up checking out, I am sure you will have a great time!!!

Hey Terry, in my opinion the best trad jazz in town is found at Fritzel's on borboun St.

I can't argue with that, johnny, but I will add a couple of suggestions:

1. Preservation Hall - A living shrine to traditional jazz, but it is a mixed bag during fest. Check the schedule.

2. Palm Court Jazz Cafe - A bit touristy, but they do have table seating and good AC and if you are not much of a night owl and not used to the heat, this might be a more relaxed venue to hear some music in comfort. I believe Lionel Ferbos is the oldest actively playing musician in the city.

Terry THIS is not THE Tipitina's!!!
it is a room that TIps uses in the Quarter to put on additional shows during high season like Fest and Mardi Gras....The actual historical TIps is uptown on Napolean.
