Two weeks out. Seems so close yet so far. So what is everyone seeing? My groups' general plan is:

4/23 - Colin Lake at dba at 5 pm then on to Papa Mali's Stoned Soul Picnic at Tips uptown

4/24 - Karl Denson, Dumpstaphunk, Robert Walters at Howlin' Wolf

4/25 - Lotus, et al at the Howlin' Wolf

4/26 - Sonny LOandreth and Tab Benoit at Rock-n-Bowl

I've only bought a ticket for two night shows so far...

The Brass Band Blowout, Thursday night before Fest, and..

Instruments A'Comin', Monday after the first weekend.

There are many others that I would like to attend, but I know from past years that I need to play it by ear... some nights I just don't have the energy to go out..

Although now, I have far more energy than I have had over the past several years, so maybe more night shows are possible; I just don't know just yet. We'll see.

Looks like you are following me around those first few nights! On the Friday night show, I am wondering the same thing. I assume Karl D. goes last? But don't know.

I am with you on Saturday - hard day because there is a lot to see everywhere, but Gentilly has a sick line up!

Saturday-wanted to do Frequinox but saw on Stanton's website, that is a 2am show so I may go with Big Sam, Grupo Fantasma and Soul Rebels at Colton.

Sunday-Stanton Moore trio at One eyed Jacks

Here's the plan as of today, it changes several times a day lately! I'm trying to keep it to smaller clubs, smaller cover charges this year, plus go to some places I haven't been yet - like Vaughns.

Thursday
Vaughn's for Kermit - anyone else up for this?

FRIDAY
Nothing has jumped out and grabbed me yet. Probably wander around Frenchmen street.

SATURDAY
dba for John Boutte early
Donna's for Henry Butler later

SUNDAY
Chickie Wah Wah for John Mooney

Friday - either Jumpin Johnny @ Chickie Wah Wah, or maybe just hang on Frenchmen with Neen. ;)

Saturday - Boutte @ dba and then Harmonicas @ Negril; or else the Swampland Jam. But Bonerama, Kermit, Mooney @RnB can't be ruled out.

Sunday - Maybe Mooney @ CWW, maybe KDTU/BSFN @ HOB...

Friday - Robert Walter, Dumpstaphunk, KDTU at the Wolf (anyone think this will sell out??? Planning to buy tix at the door)

So far, I'm leaning towards:

Friday: The Kinky Tuscadero's and Dash, Rip Rock at Carrollton Station at 10:00, Funky Meters at HOB at 1:00am (have tickets for that).

Saturday: Susan Cowsill at Carrollton Station

Having said that, you never know where we'll actually end up......

4/23 KDTU/Dumpsta Howlin Wolf 4/24 John Boutte dba then Sharon Jones HOB 4/25 Del McCoury Preservation Hall the Blind Boys @ Tips

Hey, hangtowner! Good to see someone from my neck'o woods on the threads - do you ever get to Jack Russell Brewing? My dead-band buddies introduced me to the Friday night scene recently - part kid time, part dog-park & the remaining large percentage Brit brewpub!

That Dap Kings show at House of Rules looks very tempting - I wish the venue was a little more conducive to fun!

We had to back off after gettin' tix for:
4/26 Sonny & Tab @ Rock'n'Bowl
4/37 IAC
5/1 Bayou Rendezvous
5/3 Dumpstapunk

But I'm still eyeing:
4/24 Honey Is Swamp @ Hi-Ho
4/29 Junco Partners @ Maple Leaf
4/20 Bonerama/Midnite Disturbers @ Colton
5/2 Medeski, Martin & Wood @ Colton
+ anything at Pres. Hall, d.b.a. & Blue Nile that I have the strength to go to!

I'd love to see Sharon Jones at the HOB, but I'd like to keep my options open as long as possible (and the ticketmaster fees don't help).

Does anyone know how likely it is that I'd be able to pick up tickets at the door?

That show might be an unlikely sellout given the myriad choices for Sat nite... and sign up for a HOB account so you can bust a move on any 2-Fer shows they announce the next couple of Tuesdays! I've had a great time at all of my "rules" shows - and the 1/2-price Dr. John tix last year left me with a very favorable memory.

It is the old Howlin Wolf -- a nice size with bars on both sides and an upstairs with a railing to lean on. Overall it is a great place to see music.

Is Booker T. Jones playing with the Dirty Dozen, or Hill Country Review at the Republic? I originally thought it was going to be Booker T. with Hill Country Review, but the ticket site makes it look like he's with Dirty Dozen.

the only 1st Weekend show I bought tickets for is Allen Toussaint at Snug Harbour, now that classic NO artists like Snooks and Eddie Bo are gone, I gotta catch Allen one more time.

Is Art Neville playing anywhere?

I'm also going to a New Orleans Hornet's playoff game, they just released tickets yesterday. Don't know the dates yet, but hopefully the games are when I'm in town.

I can't find a good Monday night show to go too. I'm going to the Ponderosa Stomp on Tues and Wed, so I don't want to go to Piano night at HOB, maybe I'll just go to Donna's Jam Night.

There are two first weekend gigs for Artie that I know of: Both late night at the House of Rules.

That second one is billed "with Cyril Neville".

Pat downs at the door. Seriously: Expect to be frisked on your way in.

No cameras / audio recording. No outside beverages, and if ya wanna buy from them, better bring a fat roll of greenbacks. The House of Rules will stick it to you.

As one example: An Abita beer, brewed in Abita Springs (on the North Shore), is priced as an Import.

Plus: Bring your petroleum jelly, so you're more slippery. You WILL be packed into that club at Jazz Fest.

Still: They book some fine shows.

Ya just gotta put up with some Major B.S. to attend.

Lester: Yep, sounds good. I am usually at work when on this board so I don't have any pictures here to use as my avatar. In case I don't up one, we'll be the group of five 25-30 year old Minnesotans with dark hair having a blast?? ;) I THINK it was your post about the Brass Band Blowout being a great way to start the weekend (plus what I know of each band!!) that urged me to pick that for that Thursday, so thank you (or who ever that was).

Freebo: Wow, sounds like I should keep some of that in mind. I can usually handle the tight crowds if I have a beer or two in me, but the pat down/over priced beers could be a problem if we don't plan ahead...can't wait though!!

Thanks for the heads up. Is re-entry allowed? I'm staying a block from there, so a quick run back to the room for a beer, etc. might be an option. The combination of no audio recording/pat downs at the door is a bit disconcerting...I guess I'll just have to do a good job of concealing my minidisk.

I'm guessing that the only "in-n-out" event at HOB is the Ponderosa Stomp, where the same entry gets you into both the main room and the Parish (Piano Night is probably the other). There's smoking outside, but NO SMOKIN', if you get my drift. I'm trying to remember if I got wanded or just patted down at the last Dr. John show I went to, but I know I got my camera in, cuz I'm a tourist in a tourism destination center who came in off the street where I was being a tourist (I narrowly won that argument - but a digital recorder would be a hard sell). The only chairs in the joint are upstairs in VIP, and a very few stools at tables near the bar... VERY early would be the only way to score these, IMHO. There are the steps down to the lower floor, which I have resorted to on occasion, too.

Now, the upside - great acts, great sound, excellent sight lines, lighting, amiable, if pricey, bar service, 2-fer Tuesday tix for members (come on, Sharon Jones as the loss-leader!), cool t-shirts and gifts in the store... and a kick-ass voodoo shrimp plate on the appetizer menu!

Yeah, HoR ain't all bad. And most every club is C-R-O-W-D-E-D during Jazz Fest.

But, now you know, before you go!

Have fun, and be safe. :D

Hmmm...the wand would definitely make things more difficult.

I am certainly not a cheerleader for the HOB, but I think that during Fest, Tipitinas is every bit as crowded as House of Blues ever gets.....

Tips is much more relaxed about recreational smokers and bringing a drink or two in with you, but they pack that place with as many paying bodies as they can physically fit in for the Jazzfest and Mardi Gras shows.

Thats why a show at Tipitinas during some random time in the year when there is not huge tourist crowds in town is such a sublime musical experience!!! (during fest, Tips is just too claustrophobic for my personal tastes)

Can you elaborate on the Sharon Jones comment? Is there a ticket special for that Saturday night show??

by next Tuesday, there should be at least one run-of-Fest offering on the 2-fer special at HOB. That was just my wishful-thinking, since a half-price ticket to the Dap Kings might make the choice for my undecided krewe (who can commit now, anyway?)

Ya just gotta put up with some Major B.S. to attend.

Hey - other than that, it's all good at the House of Rules. ;)

I agree with all of the above - they slam people into that venue far beyond any fire codes would allow (in NOLA ... we don't need no stinking fire marshalls).

On the other hand, one of my favorite Jazz Fest club shows was Lucinda Williams at the HOB, two years ago, I think. It was sold out, but I bought a ticket at face value at the last minute from someone whose friend didn't show. Yeah, it was claustrophobia city, but Lucinda and her band were really on, and the intimacy of the club setting made it all worth while.

it's Jazz Fest.....every place is crowded....the best thing about Tips is you can go upstairs and get out of the crowd...upstairs at the HOB..does not give that much of a break...but the HOB is close to where i am staying..at some clubs getting a cab home is a pain.....

For those wondering KDTU is going to close out the evening starting around 2.

Also, the Sat. show at HW featuring Lotus Lyrics Born and others looks like it will be something fresh to check out this year.

Plus there is not much going on that night so I am amped to finally see some new talent at jazzfest.
