They might not have power right now......and I know Mel and Bream aren't in NOLA but the line of weather I saw was pretty big so they might have been affected as well. Here's the story......
Apparent tornado rips though New Orleans area
2/13/2007, 6:07 a.m. CT
By KEVIN McGILL
The Associated Press *
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — An apparent tornado ripped through the New Orleans area early Tuesday, damaging buildings and knocking out power in Westwego, across the Mississippi River from the city, and two areas of the city itself before heading into Mississippi.
The storm, which hit around 3:30 a.m., tore the roof off a hotel in Westwego. It also damaged roofs in New Orleans.
At least three people were brought to the hospital. Two Westwego residents were injured, but neither was seriously hurt, Mayor Robert Billiot said.
About 16,000 people were without power in New Orleans' Carrolton area, 3,000 in Westwego, and 2,000 in scattered outages in Metairie, west of the city, and eastern New Orleans, a spokesman for Entergy Corp. said.
Trailers overturned in some areas and at least six homes collapsed, officials said.
Two elementary schools in Westwego closed for the day.
Billiot said the storm destroyed dozens of homes and businesses in Westwego. The city opened a shelter at Worley Middle School.
"There is just so much destruction," he said.
Rick Edmonds of Westwego said the wind swept the roof from his home. "I was asleep on the couch and the wind started hitting me in the head," he said. He said his wife, asleep in a bedroom, was cut on the leg.
At one point, emergency workers in New Orleans' uptown neighborhood scrambled to clear a downed magnolia tree so an ambulance could get by.
John Carolan, 50, who lives in the neighborhood, said he was awakened by the storm and got up in time to get into a closet with his wife.
"Ten seconds and it was over," he said.
He said the storm blew furniture on his porch down the street.
Radar data provides "pretty convincing evidence there was a tornado," but a meteorologist was heading to the city to survey damage and assess the storm, said meteorologist Robert Ricks in the National Weather Service office in Slidell.
All the damage appeared to be from one storm cell, he said.
The damage came from storms well ahead of a squall line moving east, he said.
"It should be an improving trend the rest of the day," Ricks said.

Fine in my area. As soon as I saw what happened I knew I better jump on here cause you sweet folks would be worried. Thanks so much. There were some very hard hit areas and the pictures are awful. Jenn lives right near my son's school though and apparently that area is fine however there was a tornado in Gentilly closer to the lake that was very ugly. I need to run but wanted to let you know I was fine and Jenn should be okay too.

We are good over here, and grateful. I just spoke to a close friend of mine who lives a few blocks from Jenn and he said his trash can blew over and nothing more, no sirens, no sight of problems. I think seefood lives in the Marigny, which is intact. I don't know where nola lives. It's gonna be a long day, kids. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

You rock.....I just got off the phone with my mother-in-law (who is living with sister in law post K) - they are fine. A couple of blocks away major damage. Electricity fine until this am - but I suspect that was just crews trying to do repair work or get into the area without more problems.
Friends uptown in Carrollton fine too - just roof damage - but MINOR compare to other people. Lots of trees down - bummer - but they will grow again. Luckily everyone in our group is okay....and overall, it is stunning that more people weren't hurt - but I'm good with that too !!!
I am thrilled that y'all are okay too.....This is the first place I went after talking to family and friends.....

I was in NOLA a couple weeks ago and went looking for Brigsten's. Went into a gas station and asked how far down Dante' street was. What street? Dante'. What street? Dante', Dante'. Received 4 blank stares on the people in the store until one of them realized what I was asking for was Dante' (or as they understand it--Dayun,tee). What is with American Red Cross? After seeing the NOLA tornado damage on WWLTV I thought I would send a donation specifically for New Orleans tornado help. I went to the Am Red Cross web site and see that they no longer have a way to direct a donation to a specific need. I know they got in trouble after Katrina for not using funds as requested by donors. I guess their response to that is to remove the option.

Check out the slideshow and the path of the storm, from the Times-Picayune's website:

See the dotted line in between the touchdown points? Looks like the cell went right by the Fairgrounds.
Here's a pdf file of the path:

I've been off the bored for a couple of days but all is mostly fine in my neighborhood (mid-city/Bayou St. John) although a friend about 8 blocks to the northwest of me saw serious damage to a neighbor's house. The paper today showed that area to be right in the path of the tornado but maybe it wasn't on the ground right there - might have just been staight-line wind damage. Too close for comfort, though.
Thoughts and prayers to all those affected...

So....what's it been now? 10 days or so? Finally received a phone call from my friend tonight. The tornado actually blew the roof off of her house. This would be the same house that she, ALL BY HERSELF, re-furbished after the thing left about 6 feet of water standing in it. And do you know what she said to me? "Well, it's not as bad as it was after the Hurricane. If I can re-build from that, I can re-build from this"... She now has a tarp on her house, thanks to the good folks from her church. They came and tore the remnants of the roof off and put the tarp on for her. When I asked her what she needed, she said "Oh, I'm fine. Just keep me in your prayers, and I'll be o.k".
And that, folks, is why I love NOLA so very much. People like her who, no matter how bleak it is, they just keep smiling and they're just happy to be alive. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can help this amazing soul from 1000 miles away.....I'm all ears.

I know when Ms. Lena needed help we all sent whatever we could, money or gift cards etc. So perhaps if she is determined to do the work herself with local help, we could send donations of either cash or Home Depot gift cards etc (do they have them) to pay for materials or whatever she needs. I'm sure alot of us would help as best we could.
And never underestimate what a little prayer or some words or shoulder to lean on can mean.

Disaster areas declared in tornado-hit parishes
Orleans, Jeff now can seek federal aid
Saturday, February 24, 2007
By Bruce Alpert
Washington bureau
WASHINGTON -- President Bush has declared Orleans, Jefferson and St. Martin parishes major disaster areas as a result of the severe storms and tornadoes that struck the areas Feb. 12-13.
The declaration Friday, requested by Gov. Kathleen Blanco, makes residents and businesses in the affected area eligible for federal aid, including grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property and other federal assistance.
People can start applying for assistance today by calling 1-(800) 621-3362 or registering online at www.fema.gov. The toll-free telephone number will operate Monday-Saturday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
FEMA Director David Paulison said he has appointed Lee Champagne as the coordinating officer for federal recovery operations in the affected parishes.
According to Blanco's office, the storms and tornadoes damaged 295 homes in Orleans Parish, 32 of which were destroyed and 20 others that suffered major damage. Jefferson Parish reported damage to 231 homes, of which 23 were destroyed and 37 suffered major damage. In St. Martin Parish, 80 homes were damaged.
The disaster led to one fatality, 85-year-old Stella Chambers, who lived in a FEMA trailer outside her Hurricane Katrina-flooded home in Pontchartrain Park. Blanco's office said 37 people were injured in the storms.
The governor praised the disaster declaration.
"Many of these citizens will now have access to federal assistance for their immediate needs," Blanco said. "The recent storms were devastating, especially for those still working to rebuild after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. While traveling through communities impacted by this weather, I met families who were only recently able to move back into their homes and are now starting from scratch again."

That storm was way up here in Amarillo today, and the winds kicked up to 50mph. It's finally calm now. Wasn't very fun to be out today, even snowed for about an hour. Yesterday it was 70, this morning 30, but this afternoon it was in the 40's and was just cold and windy. We'll have nice weather most of the week to come in the 60's. Geeez I sound like a weather dude.

No rain or rotation here, but 30 mph winds gusting to 50. Lots of dust blew around, made the sky an ugly yellow and the air hard to breathe. Airport was closed most of the afternoon. Some folks without power, but no other damage.

Hello, everyone. First, I hope everyone is safe & sound from the latest round of weather down south. Whew.....if it ain't one thing, it's the other, hunh?
2nd, THANKS, THANKS, THANKS, to all of you who responded to my pleas for help for my friend. I think I may have over-reacted a bit though. I have spoken to her again and she said she's waiting on her insurance guy to come give her an estimate, but she has no idea that it will not be covered. (She has much more faith in the insurance industry than I do:).....anyway. I THINK she's A-o.k. She'll know more next week. I guess it's just the thought of someone (and not just her, but everyone down in that area) having to go through something else like this after everything they've already endured that just made me a little crazy. I was ready to run down there and fix her roof myself....HA!!!!
Anyway, thanks again to everyone. Ya'll are da' best!

And I looked at that radar again and that line still looks nasty, from the Gulf on north.

Same here. Got a lot of rain and wind during the night, but then it turned out to be a gorgeous, fresh, green day. We took our dog hiking around Stone Mountain and it was packed with people. The cherries and daffodils are blooming and it really felt like spring is finally coming!
