I like this location much better than their prior digs. Don't know what it is exactly, but it has a better feel to it.

I had a good time there last year at the Krewe of Zig show w/ Anders. One thing about the place is that the floors are concrete. If you're into dancing, it is a little hard on the feet, Achille's, and shins. Wear some cushy shoes!

Take cash unless you plan to drink $20 worth of beverages. You can open a tab w/ a credit card, but it's a $20 min. charge. I'm not a much of drinker, but I got to know a few people around me and this gave me a great opportunity to buy them a drink.

Last year, they did allow in/out privileges. A good thing, since they weren't serving food, but there is a place across the street that serves great burgers, etc.

The sound is good and the staff is very nice, too.

Of course, all this info is from JF 2006.

Oh, too funny, I like the old Howlin Wolf a lot better but this one is fine too :)

Now, hmm, I'm pretty sure we did the rendezvous last year, but it's all blurred . . . New Orleans Allstars with Theresa Andersson, George Porter, etc. etc., great show.

Too funny, vina! I guess what I find better about the new location is the flow at the door. The old HW had the stage to the right of the entry, so things could get kind of jammed up. It was kind of a rectangular shape with the stage at the short end of the box.

Don't make no matter; diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. It's all good.

Last year, another thing I liked about the new location was that it was on the same street, on the same side of the street as my hotel, and within two blocks! Too good to be true if you're traveling solo!

I also liked the older location better, but I saw many shows there over the years, and maybe I was just comfortable there. That being said, the new location is fine, and as others have pointed out, is just down the street. (by the way, there is still music at where the Howlin' Wolf was originally located). Last weekend, when I was in New Orleans for a few days, I walked past the old location (on the way to hear music at the new one) and they had a huge crowd inside. I cant remember the new name but it looked like it was going strong.

Talk about memories of shows at the old HW...the last one I saw there was OZOMATLI in '05, during JF. :D Traffic was stopped for blocks in both directions.

That's another plus for the new location, IMO. The old HW was in the middle of the block; the new one is on a corner. I guess if I were a club owner, I'd want my place to be on a corner rather than mid-block. Just a matter of personal preference, nothing else. :)

The old Howlin' Wolf is now called Republic New Orleans. Chatter before Jazzfest last year was that it was now a more swanky club, but I saw no difference when we saw Jurassic 5 there last year. The sound is great but the flow inside can get a little crowded.

The new Howlin' Wolf is MUCH bigger. I'd describe it as more of a wharehouse-type space (as someone else mentioned it has concrete floors). But it's a much easier space to get a drink, see the band, even stake out some space for your crew.

And, inevitably, wherever it's located, the Howlin' Wolf always has several shows I want to catch at night!

I saw several of Zigs' all nite Funk Reviews there, (usually held on the final Sunday night of Fest, and usually after the Funky Meters traditional throwdown at Tipitinas). The music would start about 2 am and go past sunrise! Quite the funk marathon, but always killer shows. Camille from the Radiators was one of the guitar players, and there would be a ton of suprise sit-in guest musicians. I also flew down to New Orleans for Halloween a few years back, to see the Meters at the old Howlin' Wolf. I missed a flight connection, and by the time I got to the show, Art Neville was just walking on stage- Perfect Timing. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable nights I ever spent in New Orleans!!! Great memories

Very warehousy which I didn't love, but it is true it was easy to get a drink . . .

I didn't like it much during MG last year. It was jam packed and took about 20 minutes to get into the bathroom. Total gridlock and that was not good. It is warehouse-like and we had to squeeze into a platform corner in order to see the stage. I try not to go there if possible :(

Last year it was great. SO LONG and so many bands. Vinyl played as well at this. Can't wait to hear who else is playing. Papa Grows is enough to say YES to this!

OH, and Amy....don't remember much either....
