Damn you're typing fast! Did you see Booker T & the MGs? Look for my friends Doris and Fred Frederick. Ghe's the daughter of Estelle Axton, one of the founders of STAX. Estelle, who's no longer with us, is getting one of the same awards that Cosimo Matassa is getting.

I am glad Irma finally got a grammy. Only at least 15 years late...After the Rain is good album...But she SHOULD also have won in 1992 for Simply the Best.
Unfortunately, that was the year that the Grammys finally got around to giving Buddy Guy one.

Well, speaking of Prince (uh, we were speaking about him weren't we?:>), I saw him perform in Vegas on Friday night!
For those who don't already know, Prince has a regular gig at a club named in honor of his last album (3121) at the Rio Suites in Vegas. I was really torn about whether I should go see Tower of Power at the Orleans or Prince...so I saw both! TOP started at 8:00 pm, and the doors opened at Prince's club at 10...he was onstage at just after midnight.
What can I say? TOP was incredible! I love their music, but I had never seen them live...definitely a Jazzfest prospect if I ever saw one. There were a few hard core fans in the audience who seemed to "get it", but there were far more bleary eyed drunk gamblers who looked like they just needed a place to sit down. Those of us who "got it"...we had a blast.
As for Prince, I was blown away. I don't care what anyone says, the guy is one of the three top guitar players in the world...period. His band was red hot (as were most of the gals in the club - yikes!) and he looked like he was having a complete blast.
Back to his guitar playing for a minute...I don;t what it is going to take for Prince to really get his due as a musician/artist, but it is long overdue. The man has written over 1,000 songs (including hundreds for other artists) and he has woven all kinds of styles together to make them his own. His guitar playing is so incredibly fluid, it looks like he is barely touching the strings! If you ever get the chance to see him...go. The guy is unreal...

YYR, Lis. I know that Prince broke out around the same time as Micheal Jackson, and although they both have their...er, eccentricities...Prince has continued to remain as current as ever while Michael has drifted off into terminal weirdland.
Most people are aware of Prince circa Purple Rain, but if you ever get the chance to pick up some of his other stuff from your neighbourhood used CD store, do it. He's always had his own studio, so the production is absolutely incredible. In fact, I was just listening to one of his CD's (the one with just the Prince symbol on it) and it is totally sick! He does one song called "the Flow" that makes most modern rap sound like Kindergarten music...Sexy M.F. is one of my faves too!

I actually danced with Christina Aguilera once, she is TINY! Amazing so much power can come out of such a little thing. She got a lot more creative control over her latest double album (Back to Basics) which is a lot less poppy -- don't blame her for the first two, she wasn't thrilled with them either! :)

Yeah, "7" gives me the chills. The vocal harmonies are SO rich and overlayed, it just hits you like a wall of water! What really impresses me is how he goes from some seriously wild funk/hip hop into a lush ballad and back. "Diamonds and Pearls" is also a pretty underrated CD in my opinion...lots of lush vocals and badass funk!

Most people don't know that Prince has written just about as many hits for other people as he has for himself. He wrote Manic Monday for the Bangles, and if you listen to it side-by-side with "1999", you'll see that they're almost the same song!

Uh, yeah
Uh
Good mornin ladies and gentlemen (what hotel number is she in? )
Boys and motherfuckin girls (319, 319 cool)
This is your captain with no name speakin
And Im here 2 rock your world
With a tale that will soon be classic
About a woman u already know
No prostitute she, but the mayor of your brain
Pussy control (are u ready? )
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Our story begins in a schoolyard
A little girl skipping rope with her friends
A tisket, a tasket, no lunch in her basket
Just school books 4 the fight she would be in
One day over this hoodie
She got beat 4 some clothes and her rep
With her chin up, she scolded all yalls molded
When Im rich, on your neck I will step
And step she did 2 the straight as
Then college, the master degree
She hired the heifers that jumped her
And made everyone of them work 4 free?
No! why?
So what if my sisters are triflin?
They just dont know
She said mama didnt tellem what she told me
girl, u need pussy control (are u ready? )
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Verse 2
Pussy got bank in her pockets
Before she got dick in her drawers
If brother didnt have good and plenty of his own
In love pussy never did fall
And this fool named trick wanna stick her
Uh, talkin more schick than a bic
bout how he gonna make pussy a star
If she come and sing a lick on his hit
Pussy said nigga, u crazy if u dont know
Every woman in the world aint a freak
U can go platinum 4 times
Still couldnt make what I make in a week
So push up on somebody wanna hear that
Cuz this somebody here dont wanna know
Boy, u better act like u understand
When u roll with pussy control (are u ready? )
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Breakdown
(are u ready 4 the best pussy u ever felt? ) {x2}
With one more verse 2 the story
I need another piece of your ear
I wanna hip u all 2 the reason
Im known as the player of the year
Cuz I met this girl named pussy
At the club international balls
She was rollin 4-deep
3 sisters and a weepy-eyed white girl drivin her haul
I pulled up right beside her
And my electric top went down
I said motherfucker, I know your reputation
And Im astounded that ure here
I fear ure lonely and u want 2 know
A 12 oclock straight up nigga
That dont give a shit that ure pussy control
Well Im that nigga, at least I wanna be
But its gonna be hard as hell
2 keep my mind off a body
That would make every rich man
Want 2 sell, sell, sell (75, we need another.. 85, 85 here, sold!)
Can I tell u what Im thinkin that u already know?
U need a motherfucker that respects your name
Now say it, pussy control (are u ready? )
Aaah, pussy control, oh
Aaah, pussy control, oh
And the moral of this motherfucker is
Ladies, makeem act like they know
U are, was, and always will be pussy control (are u ready? )
Peace and be wild (aaah, pussy control)
Say what, huh? (oh)
Oh no, dont u think about callin her a ho (are u ready? )
U juvenile delinquent
Best sit your ass down
Talkin about pussy control
Huh, can u dig it?
Aaah, pussy control (are u ready? )
Oh (are u ready? )
Aaah, pussy control (are u ready? )
Oh (are u ready? )

Oh, he's a freak too...and I mean that in the good sense! :>)
I used to manage a band in Winnipeg, and we were the first people to ever record at Paisley Park (his studios) in Minneapolis. The facility is amazing, and he had two vaults completely full of various master recordings. His manager told me that Prince could release a brand new album every single week, and still not come close to releasing everything he's written...and that was back in 1988!
What really raised my eyebrows was when I was told about how Prince would bring his various women back to the studio. He would make love to them in the sound booth and record the moans and orgasms for use in his various recordings...now THAT'S an artist! :>)
I've also been in his (recently bulldozed) mansion in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Everything in the house (including the exterior of the house itself) was various shades of purple and gold: purple marble in the foyer, purple columns...you name it.
Despite his apparent eccentricities, he's really a remarkably shy guy. He has a great sense of humour and wonderful sense of mischief, but most people would never see that...he just keeps himself so protected from those outside his circle. He's also a fanatical control freak: he knows exactly what he wants and he runs his own show from top to bottom...
