I love catching some of the gospel groups at Fest. I need some help though. I only know the names of a few of the groups/artist that play. Does anyone have the names of some must see acts? Where is Jordan when I need him? :)

My one must see every year is The Johnson Extension, but one of my old students is in that group. However they are phenomenal!
Thanks. I've seen The Bester Singers, The Golden Wings, The Crown Seekers, Xavier University Gospel Choir, Zulu Ensemble Male Chorus and a few others but I don't really remember any others.

Personally I wouldn't feel it was Jazzfest without seeing at least two or three of the following: Zion Harmonizers, Mighty Chariots (where are they on the schedule BTW?) , Rocks of Harmony, Crown Seekers, Coolie Family, Voices of Distinction and the Golden Wings. Of course any group with "Choir" as part of their name always has potential.

The Bumble Bees are a troupe of trombonists from a branch of the United
House of Prayer gospel church.
"They normally don't (perform) outside the church," Quint Davis said. "We've
been trying to get them for years. It's a brass band, but a sanctified
brass band with 14 trombones

I've been listening to as many artists as I can find on the www. I highlighted Rocks of harmony and val and love alive with the dimensions of faith for first weekend. Haven't gotten to 2nd yet.
Hey festydave, are we going to have artist bios this year?
Jada, what about Irma Thomas' tribute to Mahalia Jackson?
I doubt that one will be in the Gospel tent. The (phenomenal) tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe was in the Blues Tent, so that's my guess for this one too.
And damn straight I'll be present for that one.

I never miss NOLA's own "Shades of Praise". This is an interracial, interdenominational choir that just rocks the message. Some truly great voices. Also don't miss Dottie Peoples she is amazing.
Then again I hardly ever walk past the Gospel tent without stopping, it's all great.

The gospel tent is my favorite venue at Jazz Fest. There have been many occasions when I was at another stage and when I came back to the gospel tent, some choir that I missed (only because you gotta miss something) was bringing the house down! So, you never know who's gonna rock the tent...most of the choirs are regular names that are booked every year and they are all wonderful. A personal favorite is The Mighty Chariots of Fire....and I noticed as well that they are not on the schedule. That was one of the first names that I looked for. However, the grids are not out yet and I know there are more names than on the lineup that has been released. Also, they are from New Orleans, so I'm hoping. Awesome group!

The Mighty Chariots are also one of my favorites...here's a picture I took from a few years that kinda of captures the spirit of the tent when they are "on fire."

I tend to favor the smaller groups like the Johnson Extension or Crownseekers (first weekend) or Holmes Brothers (probably on the blues stage) Melody Clouds of Joy (second weekend). Bottom line is I still get the gospel acts a bit confused. I find that the gambit usually describes the number of people in the group, and that is a pretty good guide for me. This year I swear I'll write down the names of the acts I love.

Oh, yea, Johnson extension is a must. And Val Love alive. Both fabulous.
Last year (following some supplemental cookies for breakfast), a couple friends and I were giggling about Bonerama, who they'd seen the day before for the first time. We were grabbing a bite before heading over to the Gospel tent for the Johnson Extension. My friend Jim was eating a very loooong sausage sandwich - it was sticking way out of the bun. We all looked at it and and pronounced - Jim don't need no johnson extension!
When were heard their magical sounds, we begged God's forgiveness for making their name a dirty joke. And we felt it immediately, all our sins washed away in the gospel tent.

My favorites (when I get my Gospel on):
- Campbell Brothers (although they're usually in the Blues Tent now)
- Mighty Clouds of Joy
- Mighty Chariots (basically all of the Mighties)
- Aaron Neville (he does an incredible gospel set)
- Shades of Praise
But I only wish the "white" hymns I endured as a kid had half of the soul and true emotion as what I hear in the Gospel Tent at JF!!

Did anyone see them last year at the Old Point Bar? I missed those shows, and I regret it.

I did see them at the old point and it was the best live show I have ever seen. Sorry to those who missed it, but don't miss it next time. I was talking to Chuck Campbell one night after a gig at BB Kings in NYC and was thanking him for that wonderful night of music. He was so glad I loved it because he thought it was one of the best gigs they have ever played, but wasn't sure it translated to the audience. I assured him that it translated allright!

Last night we saw Eric Bibb (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=31694200)who had Darick Campbell sit in for the last five songs in a little old club about two blocks from my house. Just the two of them, but that forty minutes or so is one the absolute highlights of the last few years for my wife and myself. Eric said he wants to team up with the whole Campbell band sometime in the future. But, oh my, if they just live up to what Eric and Darick laid down here last night...wow...don't miss it. (I heard that they headed out to a local recording studio after the concert)

Caught Eric Bibb in Tellirude this past fall,... top notch talent... The Campbell set in the blues tent 2-3 years ago easily ranks in the top five of my all time fest sets.... The Brothers were "ON" that day and that young lady they had playin' with them was also an incredible talent... Have never been a big fan of the tent but that day sure made me forget all that...
Listenin' to The Staple Singers beltin' out "Respect Yourself" right now and all those super fine memories of the past combined with such a great tune makes me a happy boy indeed......

We were lucky enough to catch the Campbell Brothers in the Blues Tent in 05 and last year at The Old Point. I told each one of them during their first break at the Old Point that they were the best of JF 05! The Campbell Brothers in a small venue just does not get any better. You used to be able to find Aaron in the Gospel tent on Sunday mornings. In 2000 or 2001 I was standing by the back of the tent, cafe au lait in hand, listening, when he bumped into me, just as I had raised my cup to my lips, and sent my coffee spilling down the front of my dress. He grabbed a napkin and started dabbing at me, putting one hand on my shoulder and telling me how sorry he was. I don't think I ever say a word, but I sure smiled a lot. Wow that man has such HUGE arms! He could have dabbed all the wanted.:o

I am so sorry that I did not catch this group at the fest, but unfortunately JF 2005 was one of the two fests I've missed in many years. And to see them in a small club? Oh Lord.......they would've had to pick me up, 'cause I would have been dancing and shaking the whole time. I saved these two amazing clips, and will watch them again from time to time. The New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic has been long at the forefront of the efforts to care for New Orleans’ treasured music community. In celebration of their ninth anniversary, we are presenting a very special concert featuring NEA Heritage Award winning Sacred Steel artists The Campbell Brothers and many of New Orleans’ most celebrated musicains. This will be the second meeting of many of these artists. Last year’s concert with Campbell Brothers was a sold out, all night extravaganza that raised over $6,000 for the clinic and gave birth to a new sound called Sacred Funk.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see so many world-class artists in a warm, intimate, great sounding venue. Last year, the Campbell Brothers next major appearance after the Old Point was at Carnegie Hall! Only 180 tickets will be available, so please act fast to insure your place at this incredible event.
