Maybe the carnival spirit has gotten the best of me, but I see this as sending something positive to the city. I like that he wanted to tour the area on bikes to get out from behind the protection and comfort of a car.

Jenn--it looks like he rode right by your house!!!;)

Not only did he come right by our house, David went out to meet him before they got started & talked to him for awhile. David was the only neighborhood person there, the rest were political lackeys, newspeople (WWL) and friends of our (she sux) councilperson, Cynthia Hedge-Morrell on her "brand new" bike! David told him about our problems and the horrible potholes on our street and was the only one there to call him "Dr." Blakely, which is what made him come over to talk to David. I have LOTS of hope for this guy! He's a "geterdone" kind of guy. (I hope!)

Jenn I'm relieved by what you wrote....that's the feel I got for the guy from what I've read, but you can get a much better feel if you've actually met him. I was glad to see the article in the paper and more encouraged now.

I read that article as well and you cannot argue with the man's credentials so I have to give C.Ray props for hiring him (Boy that hurt). I found it telling that in lengthy Nagin article today it spoke positively of the trip to Wall St. firms that city leaders took to look for loan solutions etc. to help the city rebuild and that Blakely specifically was cited by the financial leaders they met with nary a mention of the mayor's name.

"We were very, very impressed with Ed Blakely," said Curtis Harris, director of public finance for Merrill Lynch, who visited with the group. "We knew of his credentials and his work in other places."

Harris said that Blakely told the group that "the city and its future partners from Wall Street were going to work hand-in-hand to come up with financing tools that would allow for development simultaneously in housing, commercial, the schools. . . . He had a specific plan he had laid out."

I hope it ends up that he becomes THE man behind the scenes, pulling the strings and weilding the power.

Blakely's saying make me accountable for how money for New Orleans is spent.

Why a state government group, the Louisiana Recovery Authoriity, should even consider giving federal and state funds to ANOTHER state government group, the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority to dole out is beyond me, unless it's to make sure some buddies get their hands greased.

Give the man what he wants, get the f out of the way and let him work.
