I'm looking for some help with the history of a song. Last year at Rock'N'Bowl I heard Cyril Neville and Tribe 13 sing what might be the most danceable protest song ever:

Hey, you,
Up there in the White House,
We want our money back!

I've been keeping my eyes open for a recording but no luck yet. But to feed my NOLA Jones I picked up an album from the Tremè Brass Band, "Gimme My Money Back." The title track sounds at heart like the same song. Now I think it must be an older song that the artists re-work. Unfortunately I got the Tremè Brass Band album on eMusic, so no liner notes. I found a comment on a blog calling the song "James Anthony's 'Money Back'" but nothing more specific. (One of the top entries on a Google search was my own post about the show on these boards. Not too helpful.) Can the collective wisdom and experience of the Threadhead community fill me in on the history of this song? Thanks for your help.

And, if you haven't heard it, it is one kickin' song!

Think I heard Cyril do that song at LMF last year. He's go a new CD out any day, hopefully it's on it.

I was thinking that, too, but the new album is on amazon and that song is not listed. No luck thus far.

Don't the Treme Brass Band do a cover of that one?

I think it's the title of one of their albums?

Hold on while I check....

Yep! :D

At least, here's what LMF has to say in thier summary: 'This is a very popular contemporary brass band record from New Orleans. "Gimme My Money Back" the title track became a regional hit. Tracks 4-7 were recorded live at the Louisiana Music Factory at our annual "Brass Band Blow Out" during Jazz Fest 1995. Lionel Battiste's vocals stand out as does the mixture of young and old musicians. Recommended.'

'Nuff said!

Driving home from a local bar on Fat Tuesday, I mentioned to a friend "come on XRT, give me a great song to drive home to". So, I turn on the radio and sure enough, I could hear some funky tuba playing and immediately knew I was in for a treat. It was the Treme Brass Band version of this song. A great way to finish off Fat Tuesday on a cold winter night in Chicago.

XRT will tease you with the occasional great song, otherwise they seem to be stuck in their 1989 hey day.

1989 at least had great music. With all of the good music out there, the current stuff they play is pretty bad. The station is still pretty cool when you get away from the canned drive times.

Agreed. XRT seemed to have had an identity crisis when Grunge hit. Still my favorite Chi-Town radio station.
How is the little snowman doing ??
