I would like to distribute a pin this year at Jazz Fest.
Can someone suggest a site to order from?
Or is there an enterprising Threadhead who owns a button making machine? I'd rather keep it in the family.

I've order from www.buttonstore.com (http://www.buttonstore.com) for the last 5 years. They're reliable, have a quick turnaround and are easy to work with.
This year they've offered us a discount. Just put JFest07 in the cart and get a 15% discount. :)

Cafepress does produce pins. I have had mine made by them and was very happy with the quality.
http://www.cafepress.com/
I do know that CBD has a site she prefers that is less expensive, so hopefully she will be along shortly to share that info.
Edited to add --- OOPS - she has arrived while I was typing. :o

I can't seem to hit upon the correct number. I either run out or have 'em left over. I've tried 100 (ran out), 200 a couple of times (both ran out and had left over). It also depends on whether I have a T'head-specific button or a generic that I'll hand out to everybody.
Usually, I check the price of 100, 150 (T'head-specific), 200 and 250 (generic) and make a determination from that.
In other words, it's always a guess. :)
Between the Patry planning, the tshirts, etc., button designing and other assorted projects, it appears my desk could be called TBD (the Threadhead Business District). :D

The day after the fest last year, I rode a bicycle thru the streets of Gentilly, Lakeview to the West End and then back to the quarter. I still can't find the words to describe the destruction to my friends and coworkers.
On another note, I reread my original post and I think I'm stuck on stupid today myself! "owes" instead of "owns." I've spent the afternoon writing my self evaluation for work. I think I better proofread it carefully or I'll be out on the street.

OK, I've been on this bored for almost a year, but in some ways I'm a newbie. I certainly am not a newbie to the Fest, but there are some Threadhead traditions that I am being initiated to (and embracing fully:D )through this bored.
This Lagniappe post is one...am I to assume that THs bring pins and smaller items to give to/trade with other festers??? I know that it is not required, but do a lot of y'all do it???
There is such a Threadhead underground to learn!!;) I can't believe that I have been showing for 26 years at the Fest and all of this has been happening in plain site but off my radar!!LOL:cool:

Yessir..... pins, stickers, silly stuff, whatever.....some do and some don't. I wouldn't say most of us do, probably less than half? You'll notice some threadheads simply by the pins all over their backpacks. Definitely not an obligation, just do it if you feel inspired and don't feel funny if you don't.

This is for Rosey & NYmama & other newbies. :)
lagniappe means "a little something extra". Threadheads (and pdkkers) have embraced that tradition to give their fellow festers a specially designed button, a trinket, a toy, anything that you like & think your friends would like.
Some people make buttons, some folks have given out bubble necklaces (Oriental trading co is a good place to look for lagniappes!), some folks use their own imaginations (Like funkkjunkie!)
And that's the thing. Use your imagination, toys, blinkie pins, whatever..hugs are also good lagniappes! :) Gumbo had some really cool bumper stickers last year.
Everything is treasured!

This is my 9th fest and only my 3ird year to bring a lagniappe. Only if you're inspired is my motto because not one person who gives a lagniappe expects something in return. Other things I've received: compilation cds. Festngator often gives a different cd each day of fest, featuring some of that day's artists. And I sure would like to know who gave out the cd with the tree with the "POSTED" sign on the tree. Get it? ;)
Tattoos, survival kit, water, tie dyed hankies, special laminates on lanyards. ANything goes.

After many years you will find you have many hundred buttons. too precious to throw away, but you can't exactly wear them all. so you select a few old ones, laugh & cry at some of the memoreis and close the box. many are stained & rusty from sweat, mister bottles, or r*in. and i have some shirts with permanent rust stains from the same - but they're just Fest shirts & it adds character. be careful if pinning to nice clothes during damp conditions.

there has been times in the past when people were not allowed to bring their lagniappes inside fest - security assumed they would be trying to vend since they had so many of one item.
i dont think it has happened with buttons. i know it happened with Kelly's folding fans one year. and Kelly does not look like a hippie vendor. and other people with other items - maybe tied dyed hankies? can't remember exactly what - but i've heard of it more than once. something like a multitude of cd's would probably be very suspect.
if this was to happen, and you can't just walk back to a car and stash - you either have to try the other gate and hope for different result (which is quite possible), give them up, give them away to the people around you, or spend valuable time & $ going back to your temporary home.

by popular demand i am required to give out the tissues lagniappe. the snack size ziploc it comes in serves as a waterproof case for phones, small cameras, or cigs. i include my jazzfest card so folks have my digits if they need 'em. i try to vary the other trinkets - both useful or amusing. i added safety pins last year and they proved to be valuable to some folks. they don't weigh much but they take up alot of backpack space. luckily we haul alot of stuff in and set up camp. i have a place to stash the extras and not carry with me constantly.
slightly predictable, but quite functional.

ooooooh, very klever miss zkitty. If I bring a chair, that may be the way to go.
depends upon security. some of them barely glance, others really pat the stuff down.
i have learned that the more i volunteer to show, the less they look. but i rarely try to bring in true contraband - champagne for weddings twice is about it.

As a public service to the Threadhead nation, if you have lagniappe that you feel will be turned away at the gate, I can bring it in with me for the second weekend. Keep in mind, I can only do this on the second weekend. Of course I can only bring in legal contraband ;) :D , and you have to get it to me before the second Friday. If this will help someone out there who is contemplating putting together a CD or the like, let me know!

Funny you should post just now, Mark. I just ordered my lagniappes payed for by my Ebay sales! And I got a discount. lol, I'm so excited. I can't wait to get them. And I should have no problem getting them in myself. This will be my first time giving out lagniappes.

It does depend, but we tend to come in the same gate each day and I found that they really didn't inspect the chairs much at all (I also made sure to put the buttons in the folded chair legs - so they couldn't easily be detected if someone chose to feel up with chair in it's bag . . . and I've NEVER had any of them ask me to remove the chair from the bag!
But generally I do agree with you about bringing in true contraband items . . . I do try to be a good kitten.

What gate seems to be the best bet to get in with your lagniappes? Also aprox. how many do you think I should bring per day to the fest. Mine are about the size of a folding fan. I realllllly goofed. I thought I ordere 12 dozen but instead I got 24 dozen. (not alot of $ but still alot of langniappes for only the 1st weekend and the party) Maybe I'll give the extra to someone who wants them for the 2nd weekend.

There will be a couple hundred folks at the patry. I plan to give out most of mine there, saving some for '2nd weekender onlys'
Speaking of lagniappe, check out the 'Addition To The Threadhead Patry' thread!!!!

There's no way to know which gate will be easier to get in. You just gotta try 'em.
Maybe someone from 2nd weekend only will speak up to share in the loot. Then you can divide them in half. I'd bring more to the first meetup and less for the other days because you will have already met a lot of the people who show up for subsequent meetups.

That's always a tough question. The real answer is: it's up to you. I've seen people just bring a couple of dozen and give them out selectively, and I've seen people go to everyone and make sure they had one. Some people just aren't interested in carrying around extra stuff at fest, while others love getting things. When I first started hanging with these folks, buttons were the rage. Some people still give them, but others have switched to different things. Buttons are easy for people to carry around, so you need more of them than, say, a kazoo. Another thing you should consider is getting them in.

Here's my lagniappe stratgery:
Arrive early for the meetups at Ms. Lena's.
Buy a bunch of beers and set them aside.
When you see friends with good stuff, carry some beers over. And hurry.
Make your trade and move on to the next button pusher.
If they don't want beers or beverage of choice, then offer up the booty you have already accumulated.
Works every time, for me. ;)

I'm sorry to hear that they're stopping folks at the gate for having buttons. I used to give away a different lagniappe for each day- buttons, pins, keychains, mini noise makers, beads...more stuff than I can remember. I love giving gifts all year round, so lagniappes just always came natrually to me. I try to give 'em to everybody - the people working the food booths, the bus driver, strangers I sit next to at the picnic tables, etc.

I've done the feathers several years. It's really easy to carry around a bag of feathers (lots lighter than a bag of buttons). Plus I always had fun clipping them on everybody in strange places. ;) And everybody looks more festive wearing a feather!!

CBH....Thanks! How many do you normally make for Lagniappes?
Last year I gave out little beaded bracelets... in green for the "greening of New Orleans" after it was so brown for so long, ya know? I found them in Michael's in the clearence baskets, and I dug through all the baskets to buy all I could find. There were about a 10 to 12 bracelets tied together and I think I bought about 18 bundles. The nice thing is that they were lightweight, and I could put on about 10 of them and just take them off as I saw folks rather than digging through my bag.
... hmmm... I'm going to have to go to Michaels when I can walk again! I'm liking that idea again.

Wow... I want them ALL!!! So utterly beautiful. My husband tries to buy me something nice at JF each time he goes, last year I got a very nice pottery piece, which I have displayed on the chestnut valance in my dining room, along with the pottery mask from Greece that my son brought back from his 9/11 deployment. There's a few other special things up there, as well, but your glass would have to be the centerpiece of my China cabinet. I have 6 Josh Simpson goblets in there the he bought me at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in 1977. Belive it or not, he paid about $100 for the six of them, now they'd go for over $100 each... and they are a beautiful deep amethyst and very, very tall.
I have always regretted that we never purchased a piece from a guy that I went to college with... he offered us whatever we wanted from a case he brought into sculpture class one day, as a wedding gift, basically for only $100... but we needed lamps and pots and pans and bedding and all that other essential stuff so we didn't buy it. About 10 years ago, a book was published about him, so I called to see if he'd autograph a copy for the teacher we had in sculpture class who was retiring, and I brought my own copy along, so now the only thing I have with his signature on it is a copy of the book "Paul J. Stankard: Homage to Nature" - of course, spending the day with him in his studio was totally amazing, but you do that sort of thing everyday, so you wouldn't be nearly as impressed as I was, I'm sure. My husband's entire family worked in various phases of the glass industry and up in our attic is his grandfathers "recipe" book. He was a glass maker and worked the circuit from Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and NJ, eventually ending his career at Wheaton's here in Millville. My father in law ran their Mold Maker Shop and even my husband worked there just after HS before going into the Army back in 1965 (when I was only in 7th grade.. ahem... can't let that slide).

Some day I would love to see some of the stuff in your attic. So much of that kind of stuff is lost over the years. One of my prized things is an original copy of part of Diderot's book illustrating different crafts from the 1700's. I only have the part on glass forming, but it is quite special.
Is your husband coming with you? Maybe we can put him to work! Thanks for your kind words...make sure you plan on coming for the meet-up at the studio:D

They really are extremely beautiful Rosy and while I unfortunately just can't afford one of the wavy bowls - luckily you have some other very lovely pieces that are in my price range. I can hardly wait not only to meet you in person and see you work, but also to be able to hand-pick some of your work for my collection (which isn't as notable as Mama Roux's - but a kitten's gotta start somewhere)! :)

But hey, it really isn't a trade thing! It's a gift thing.
I love giving gifts all year round, so lagniappes just always came natrually to me. I try to give 'em to everybody - the people working the food booths, the bus driver, strangers I sit next to at the picnic tables, etc.
No one should ever feel like they have to have something to give back. It's been said before, but it is really true. Your smile and friendship are the best langiappe of all.
I still have my Gridded by NEEN button on my hat. It's always been one of my most favorite lagniappes ever.
... although the cockaroach flashlight beads last year were pretty good. I'm saying that cuz they are hanging on the door knob to my room and I can see 'em all the time. They sort of freak out the dog. Each day he sniffs at the bug to make sure it's not real. LOL

You're not gonna believe this, Jax... but I still have mine on. I've not taken them off at all over the past 10 months. They reside on my wrist along with the PGG Renew New Orleans band I got for Christmas in '05. :D

I've told each of my 3 kids that they each get TWO of the goblets when I go, but they are MINE, mine, mine! I love 'em and was utterly shocked when I got them, especially cuz I was swooning over his little paperweights. I once had a dinner party and used them, but gave one of the guests a Tommy Tippy cup (one of those with the lid and weighted bottoms that rock, for babies) because earlier that evening, he was helping in the kitchen and dropped the filet knife through his foot. Do you think I'd trust him with one of those goblets after a trick like that? LOL
Paul is one of the nicest people in the universe. We used to have a laughing good time together in Sculpture class, but that was back in 1974 and he was working at Andrews Glass here in Newfield, where my husband lived and where we live now, and I had just moved back from living up in Cambridge, MA, and Paul is from MA, so we struck up a friendship right off. Just before classes ended, he came in with this big suitcase. When my honey came by, he was my model, we were doing clay busts, Paul comes over and says he has to show us something... anything in the case could be ours for only 100 bucks, consider it a wedding gift of sorts, because he had shown me some of his works and I just went ga-ga... but we were broke and trying to save money for the wedding, and University of Delaware... so we passed... and I've kicked myself in the arse for the past 33 years. When I spent the day with Paul at the studio, he HAD to bring that up and laughed. I told him any "seconds" he has now, he can offer me and I just might not say NO... but I don't expect that to ever happen of course. His daughters are working with him now and the oldest one does magnificent work herself. The day I spent with them, she was assemblying the tiny little bees for in the botanical works.
I always thought it was so lovely of Paul to do a special piece each year for his wife and do a little poem along with it. He's doing an exhibit in Ireland, which should be wonderful, considering it's his heritage.
Paul always wanted to see the glass recipe book, too, but we've never gotten all that stuff down. Bats... there are bats in our attic and they scare the .... out of me, so I stay away. No matter what we've done, they keep getting in there and coming back, even after a new roof. But if we do get it down sometime, I'll be sure to either make some copies or do something so you can see it. We probably should have it stored in a better place. I used it back in 1973 for reference on an art history project I did, but haven't touched it since.
Yes, John is coming down with me... we'll have to be sure to steer him your way and make big HINTS! :) We're all a bunch of glass freaks here in South Jersey, it's in the blood... or is it the sand pits? LOL

Don't they have a museum in Wheaton Village??? That would be a good place for that book instead of with the bats!!!

OMG! I love it! I actually went to put one on the other week and it broke :( I was so dissappointed. I had found about 6 of them in the bottom of my backpack that I must have missed last JF. I normally wear my PGG Renew, Relief, Rebuild, Renew New Orleans band, that my friend Jean gave me for Christmas in '05, when I came down to help her move back home. I have worn my I know what it means necklace since Valentines Day. I had to take it off for the cardiac cath, and the foot operation and haven't been anyplace other than the surgeon's office since... maybe tomorrow when I have to get real clothes on, I'll put that back on again.
I'm glad you liked that bracelet so much. :)

Yes, they do have a museum there, and Grandpa's photo is hanging on the walls, one where he is working over a vat of glass. I can recall my mother in law seeing it for the first time, back in the 70's when we went there. No one in the family had any idea that it was there, so she was shocked. You're right, that might be the perfect place for it... I will have to suggest that, eventually. After being retired from Wheaton's, I'm not so sure my Father in Law has to many fond memories of the place, so we may have to wait a bit, if you know what I mean. He's 85 now and getting a bit cranky about some things.
ah yes, the nymphs... the little woodland creatures, he cracked me up telling me to look at them, how they are anatomically correct, with this big grin on his face. Paul is a trip!
I look forward to meeting you in person and seeing your art.

We always have daily meet-ups at Ms. Lena's beer tent. Once the cubes are out, a convenient time is decided on -- usually around 1:00 p.m.
In addition, some of us are kind of obvious just walking around because of our buttons and shirts, etc. When you see us, just say HI.

Thanks Bream - shoudda known it'd jinx the final Sunday!
It doesn't look like I'll be doing lagniappes this year coz I can't make the fest. I'm devastated but will be heavily pregnant.
So save a lagniappe for me, eat a double helping of crawfish monica and raise a beer to 'monkeynut' at Miss Lena's for me coz I'll be there in spirit. (I'm gonna make up a jazzfest CD so I can 'push' to Dumpstafunk!) Gonna do both weeks in 08 to make up for it.

FWIW, I think you can buy sticker sheets for your printer and print them yourself...Indeed, but you need to use the new high quality waterproof inks, or else they smear in the slightest humidity. You can even get window film sheets and print your own decals now.

OK, as I was looking thru all my old buttons, there's the Con Jr. button. Was Con Jr. on the old JF forum, or the old Offbeat bored??

Old JF board. The button was mine from '02... pre-threadhead.

I thought that was your handiwork. I remember there were several variations of those buttons (different groups of names). Did anyone ever meet Con Jr.? I've been looking for photos of the pre-threadhead meet-ups, but have yet to lay my hands on them. :(

I'm pretty sure he showed up during a 1st weekend meetup in '02. It was the weekend I wasn't there. :(
I miss him. (No offense, Festy.)

I miss Jr. too. Remeber his first post back after the long winter break? They were classics; long, rambling tales of remote tropical islands and such.....

I never got to meet-up with Con Jr. But I do have these pics from 2002 when we tried to get organized for a trailer camera pic.

Yeah, I think of those every year when January rolls around...
Wonder how he's doing. I don't think he's with Festival productions anymore....

Please help! I got super-cool lagniappes, but will only be at the fest 1st weekend - leaving on Monday. I was hoping that someone who would be there for both weekends would volunteer to take them to the second weekend meetups for me?

If you can, just bring 'em to 1st weekend and we'll get 'em to the 2nd weekenders.

Last year I gave out little beaded bracelets... in green for the "greening of New Orleans" after it was so brown for so long, ya know? I'm liking that idea again.
I really liked those green bracelets. I thought the sentiment was excellent.

First I want to say I am sorry for not doing this gift exchange, in fact I felt real weird taking your gifts without an exchange. I will never be in that spot again. But then you all made me feel so comfy about receiving. All went on the hat except the blow up guitar. My Daughter loves it! Took it to the ball park and is now hanging in her room for me to see all the time.
Lots of great pins and I will not single out one as my favorite but I sure got some comments on the spanking button. What fun. Got the crawfish on my key chain and have enjoyed the Bruce CD many times.
You all are so great and I will make mine special next year.

FYI, in my absence, Mightyradgumbo will be handing out the remainder of my lagniappes (a nice bumper sticker, imho) second weekend, so be sure to ask of one of mine (while they last!) along with his! Have fun at Fest, y'all!:D
