President Bush just proposed drastic cuts to NPR and PBS. We've stopped similar cuts in the past, but enough is enough: With the new Congress, we can make sure this never happens again.
We need Congress to save NPR and PBS once and for all.

Bump! It's tonight!
Thanks for the reminder. I sent myself an email to remember that it's on.
American Experience is probably the finest historical documentary program ever done for television. It's only rival was the BBC produced series from the the 70's, Alister Cooke's America. Learning the producer is a collaborator of Ken Burns only makes this more worth watching.

As he continues to waste untold billions imposing "democracy" and the American way by ways of war abroad,.. on the homefront,.. our fearful leader once again attempts to slash the most civil and thoughtful public forum to find and hear discussion of current events,.. quite a double feature,.. even by his standards.. How many more days until this decider of ours gets to go back to chopping wood instead of our collective heads??....

From the review of tonights show:
"There's more neutral ground in New Orleans than anywhere else I've ever been. In that neutral ground is a place where people can gather and meet. There's been a kind of shared culture, and the fact that the culture is shared is the essence of it."
and this:
"One of the hardest things about telling the New Orleans story is that, on an economic level, you can say it's a story of perpetual decline since the Civil War. And yet, on a cultural level, it's been this extraordinary and steady florescence.
"We felt it was important to make sure those two things were in balance."
Balance,.. something NPR and PBS are very good at (outside of Democracy Now  ).........

I agree completely, Moon. Every one I've watched has been impressive!

"Why can't they like do a Sesame Street type show for children?"....Ali G in an hilarious discussion with a conservative TV watchdog group. They maintained that SS is the only good thing on television. Naturally they were also opposed t Federal funding of PBS.

Thanks for the links and info.
It's good to know that if you miss the frst broadcast that you'll be able to catch it at another time. They know that there are 4 year olds making "early" views challenging for some. It's great for the night owls too. :)
My local viewing times are 8 PM, midnight and 3 AM, and then one more tomorrow night at 1 AM.
I haven't looked yet, but do they sell these programs on DVD following broadcast?
.....just peeked...yes, Am Ex is on DVD. :)

PBS has been fighting for its own life since the 70's, no?

House panel OK's cutting $100m of PBS budget
Appropriation bill needs full approval
By Richard Cowan, Reuters | June 17, 2005
WASHINGTON -- The House Appropriations Committee approved a bill yesterday that would cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting by $100 million, or 25 percent, starting in October.
The funding cut was included in a massive, $142.5 billion spending bill for health, education, and labor programs that still must be passed by the full House and Senate.
Representative Ralph Regula, an Ohio Republican who crafted the legislation, said 49 federal programs were being eliminated and other funding reduced because of tight spending limits.
Regula's original bill would have eliminated funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 2008, but a Democratic amendment earmarked $400 million so that public broadcasting could use the money in the future. However, $79 million in cuts for new infrastructure programs would force delays in converting public TV stations to digital technology.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting provides federal funds to the Public Broadcasting Service, or PBS, a nonprofit organization operated by 348 public television stations in the United States.
Lee Sloan, a spokeswoman for PBS, said smaller public television stations that rely heavily on federal funds would be hardest hit by the cuts, if they become law. She noted that in past funding fights, the Senate has restored funds.
Representative Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Malden, said he would try to add funding for public broadcasting on the House floor.
PBS, which made its mark with children's television programs like ''Sesame Street" and popular documentaries, has been targeted by congressional Republicans in the past for steep funding reductions.
In 1995, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich tried to eliminate funding for public television, hoping to turn it into a privately funded operation, but relented after a public outcry. Yesterday, Representative Nita Lowey, Democrat of New York, brought puppets of ''Sesame Street" characters Bert and Ernie to remind Republicans of that battle.
This year, PBS's news shows came under attack for allegedly having a liberal bias -- a charge the group's president denied.
Conservatives also complained about a recent children's show in which some of the characters visited a farm in Vermont that was run by a family headed by two women.
Representative David Obey, a Wisconsin Democrat, said the 25 percent reduction in funding for the coming year would be ''disastrous" for public broadcasting, which he said ''is the most valuable resource we have for getting quality programming for children."
__________________________________________________ __________
Yup,.. The Dems have been fighin' the good fight against the right wing tide for many a year now... Maybe since the introduction of quality channels like Bravo, Discovery, the History Channel, and the like,.. just maybe we could survive losing PBS,.. but NPR is the best of the best and needs to be supported....
Back to PBS,... imagine a show on public airwaves* dared to show a farm in Vermont that is headed by two woman??.. What would that nice Mr.Cheney think about something like that???.. Maybe Dick should consult the new and improved completely 100% heterosexual Ted Haggard (no mention if he is 100% free of those meth snortin' habits that he picked up by watchin' big bird and that long snout of his).. The right wing knows television.. Nothing beat watchin' TV when for months on end we (and every 6-15 yr. old in America) were treated to seein' old Southern Right Wingers takin' repeated pleasure in sayin' the word "blowjob"... And all that fun was goin' on while real live evil doers were learnin' how to fly,.. but not land....
*All airwaves are public and sold pennies on the dollar to big money concerns...
