If I had a list of must see bands for 2009, Roy Rogers & the Delta Rhythm Kings would be #1.
Roy has his own style of slide but if you like Sonny Landreth, Derek Trucks, Eric Sardinas, Dave Hole or any of the other great slidemen then you might enjoy this set.
1st Friday (Should be playing the Blues Tent)

#1 on my list for the second weekend has to be Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials. High energy Blues. If you enjoy Buddy Guy, Bernard Allison, Lucky Peterson then you might enjoy Lil Ed.
2nd Weekend Thursday.

I county myself very lucky to see Roy a few times a year in the San Francisco Bay area. His band is a trio with a very full sound. Watching his hands when they get moving is AMAZING! He is in my top 5 guitar players of all time. Plus, he and his wife are wonderfully kind people. See you in the blues tent first Friday!

Fred thanks for the recommendation on Lil Ed since I will be on the grounds for that one. Just listened to a bit of his mastery on youtube. Wow Hope to see you at that set.

"Chops, not chaps!" I laughed out-loudly when I first saw that on Roy's website.

Yeah, Roy Rogers is fantastic. Saw both his sets at the Byron Bay bluesfest in Oz a few years back. I just love the way he approaches his playing. It's gonna be a mini-slidefest this year - Roy, Sonny, Johnny Winter and John Mooney. What an amazing l'il collection of hot slide masters that is! Can't wait...but FOMS...I know it's gonna happen, arghhh!!

Oh MAN, now you're going to make me put it in writing - it does change from time to time. So I guess the disclaimer is "in no particular order," and "subject to change," and "flamenco guitarists not included:"

Steve Kimock (he is in the top slot though, don't miss him at JazzFest!)
Jerry Garcia
Roy Rogers
Eric Clapton
Carlos Santana

I have to give an honorable mention to Paul Simon who IMHO is TOTALLY underrated. There are so many others. Like Stu Allen....

Sometimes when I listen to the good old Grateful Dead these days I say, "Wow, did I really devote my life to following those guys around all those years?" BUT, I would never trade that experience for anything in the world. I guess you had to be there.

fyi: Del Castillo

DEL CASTILLO has become a symbol of the cross-cultural power of music with their eclectic blend of Flamenco, Rock, Latin, Blues, and World music.

It all began in late 2000 when Rick and Mark del Castillo decided to put together an album of Latin/Flamenco-style songs for their parents and friends in their hometown of Brownsville, Texas. The brothers, who had always played electric guitar in separate rock bands, had never played together and for the first time ever they began collaborating on songs on acoustic guitars.

Their good friend, vocalist/guitarist Alex Ruiz, began adding lyrics to the brothers’ instrumentals

Hey Fred, saw Dave in an establishment of dubious reputation mid-winter in Melbourne a few years back - he ripped it up! Great show!

Way right Rita - I've been told Bonnie learnt a few licks from none other than Mississippi Fred MacDowell when she was a wee lassie!
