Gonna make it this year and $30 for parking per day at the hotel is money not well spent in this economy. Any suggestions?

a lot of variables.
where in the quarter? how often do you expect to use your car?

1) there are some reasonable priced lots off Elysian fields. we usually hourly park (for visits to the market or frenchmen) at the one where Decatur, Esplanade & Elysian Fields meet. its is a 24 hour lot and there is a daily maximum, but i am not certain they allow long term parking. i have always felt it was a safe lot, but i have never left the car there overnight.
2) there are some lots there with 'monthly' parking. i dont know how you go about getting that, or how much it costs. but if you are coming and going a lot, a month may cost the same as parking a few nights else where.
both of the above options require some investigating or addition input from other TH's.
3) some people have luck finding street parking. but parking is often restricted to resident tags, or by hours or days. and how far do you want to walk late night after you park the car.
4) i know over in the CBD area, friends have found parking lots that were about 1/2 the price of the hotel lots.

you could park in the hotel lot the first night and then ask the employees for suggestions and/or look around the vacinity.
we dont stay in the 1/4 during fest, parking is one of the reason. it gripes me to pay that much to park!

i found this on trip advisor. :(

Over the years, I (and others) have suggested the parking lot at Decatur/Elysian Fields to people looking for cheaper parking. At $8 for 24 hours, it was a bargain. No more. The rate is $16 as of last weekend.

and it is fairly easy to get your car towed in New Orleans - expensive & incovenient. our rule is usually, if you didnt pay to park, its probably not legal.

this site has lots of info on what not to do:
http://www.neworleansonline.com/tools/transportation/gettingaround/parking.html
Parking Your Car

Parking in New Orleans can be challenging, considering the millions of visitors who visit by car every year. Even local residents find the parking rules of the city daunting.

The many commercial lots in the French Quarter can usually accommodate enough visitors on a given day. Early Bird specials are available to motorists in by 9:00 a.m., ranging from $3.50 to $7.00 all day. After 9:00 a.m., prices rise considerably: hourly rates can run as much as $10.00 in some areas.

More daring motorists willing to troll for a space on the street should remember the most important rule of parking in New Orleans: READ PARKING SIGNS CAREFULLY! Rules can change from neighborhood to neighborhood, and some violations can be very costly.

Violations range from $15 at an expired meter to $75 for parking on the median ( called a neutral ground in New Orleans), $200 for parking on the sidewalk in the French Quarter, and $300 for parking boats or trailers in unauthorized areas (which is almost everywhere in the city limits).

Parking Offenses
Blocking driveways or fire lanes
On sidewalks or neutral grounds
Near fire hydrants (within 15 feet)
On corners and crosswalks (within 20 feet)
In loading and service zones (buses and cab zones too)
On a parade route within two hours of a parade
During rush hours (7-9 a.m., 4-6 p.m.) on major streets
On street cleaning days (usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 a.m. - Noon)
At bagged meters (during special events) and broken meters
Near railroad crossings (within 50 feet)
On-street for more than 24 consecutive hours
Vehicles longer than 22 feet overnight in the Central Business District
On a narrow street without allowing 10 feet of unobstructed roadway
More than 18 inches from the curb
Having 3 or more unpaid parking violations.
If your car is towed away (we're sorry, but it happens), contact the Claiborne Auto Pound at (504) 565-7450.

Parking Meters
The city has modernized many of its parking meters, and some now accept dollar bills and credit cards which give you a printed receipt to place on your car dashboard. Downtown meters usually cost a quarter for 12 minutes, enforced from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Parking is prohibited at meters in designated rush hour zones from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. Please read the meters before you park! Also know that broken meters are not free passes. They are technically off-limits and could land you a ticket!

Handicapped Parking
Don't park in Handicap Zones without an official handicapped license plate. Drivers in rental cars may obtain a special handicapped placard by calling (504) 483-4610.

more warnings from http://php.terra.com/turismo/templates/destino_travel_tips.php?&destination=110&ttc=20028
i think you're starting to see the ugly pattern.

Parking

Finding a parking space is fairly easy in most of the city, except for the French Quarter, where meter maids are plentiful and tow trucks eager. If in doubt about a space, pass it up and pay to use a parking lot. Avoid parking spaces at corners and curbs: less than 15 feet between your car and the corner will result in a ticket. Watch for temporary no parking signs, which pop up along parade routes and film shoots. Long-term and overnight parking are extremely expensiveat hotels and garages, but some limited options are available for parking your car overnight safely and cheaply. There are some long-term lots around the edge of the Quarter, near Decatur Street.

I hope Ross chimes in...at least I think is was Ross. Something about the breakfast at the Casino being really good with a voucher for free 24 hour parking. Never used the idea but if it wasn't Ross, hope those that know this trick will share.

The hotels charge so much so non-guests won't park there. Barb has great info here. We have learned over the years that if a spot is empty, there is a reason it's empty so don't park there. Much safer/cheaper to use a paid lot.
Signs can run from the ground to the top of poles with information that seems to change daily.

Anyone ever tried this?....call a local garage and ask if you can schedule an oil change/tire rotation (or any reasonably inexpensive maintenance you might need) for the day you arrive and see if they'll let you pick it up on the day you leave. That way, you get something for your money (in addition to a place to park) and you patronize one of the local repair shops.

Is on street parking available within a mile or so? How about those folks that offer up their yards and such. Kinda thinking out loud.

Last year I utilized the Harrah's casino's garage. If you use your rewards card and gamble for 30 min, they will stamp your parking ticket for 24 hours free parking. Every day I would drive around the block to get a new ticket and go into Harrahs for 30 minutes. It was a hassel but it worked and saved me a lot of money, if you gamble right!

One more thing. Be careful how you park in their garage. I parked on the end in what I thought was a parking place. I returned to find a shoe on one of my wheels. I lucked out that they did not charge me to take it off. Message proper parking in the garages too!

its not so good, since the max is now $16. not sure how much per hour.
besides, i wont be shopping at the market this year - no time. and i doubt we make a night on frenchmen, plus we've been fairly lucky with street parking around there if we arrive early enough.

Still better than $20 something, eh? We were thinking of this option as being not too far from the Omni, will see . . .

For those on the Frenchmen half of the 1/4, I will give a recommedation for the one that Barb mentioned earlier. It is located on the corner of Decatur and Elysian Fields. It is staffed 24/7, lighted and safe to leave your vehicle for a few days at a time. They do not have in/out privileges though so that may cost you a little more. 24 hours is only 8 bucks.

so its still only $8? i found a post on a travel site that it was now $16?
we've been known to max it out during a day in the 1/4. 8 is much better.

i love that lot, have used it for years for shopping at the french market and the quarter in general. i have always felt safe there. and now its also convenient for the night gigs on frenchmen.

safety note: i would not walk to/from this lot, or most other 1/4 parking lots by myself at night.
