Dave Bartholomew was great! I saw the first two sets, so I don't know what they played in the third. Bob French on drums, Ralph Johnson on clarinet, Thaddeus Richard on piano, Mr. Walker on upright bass and Fred Lonzo on trombone. They were all cutting up and picking on each other throughout and they were having a blast. Dave would alternately stand up and sit down (he's only 88), sing and play. Sometimes his voice and playing were low, other times quite loud. A mix of dixieland instrumental classics, along with Ain't Gonna Do It, Bye Bye Blackbird, My Ding-A-Ling, Ain't She Sweet, and The Monkey Speaks His Mind. David Torkanowsky was sitting in the crowd and played on one song while Thaddeus played sax. The audience was cajoled to sing in response and chastised for not being loud enough. The place was completely jammed and nearly half of the audience was under 30, which was a pleasant surprise for me. After the second set, I went up and Shook Mr. B's hand and told him I was glad he came back, I was glad he is playing for people and I was glad I got to see him again. There were people literally sitting on the floor at the band's feet.

There is talk of Dave playing Preservation Hall on something of a regular schedule. I cannot recommend seeing him in this setting more highly. The triumphant return of a living legend of New Orleans music.

I saw him at Preservation Hall a few years back, and it was one of my most memorable New Orleans performances. It was a real treat to hear this legend play some great trad jazz.
