Thinking I could use some help to find the places where good eating on less can be had. We have found a way to make it for last weekend after we thought it was impossible. Landed a few contracts (thank God), generous friends and used points for airfare. WOOHOO!!! I believe in miracles at this time for sure.

Which leads me to a few questions about eating good on little that BigDag mentioned.

Breakfast and dinner suggestions please. Thank you very very much.

Budget fest rocks:

SWAG has incredible info on his site - so start there. http://www.swagland.com there are notes on budget festing.

Your hotel may have a free continental breakfast. If that's not an option, you can go to walgreens or such and pick up some of the little oatmeal bowl thingies and use the coffee maker in your room to heat up water and have instant oatmeal. Nutritious, it stays with you - and super inexpensive.

Fruit from the French Market - good morning walk from a downtown hotel - and coffee at any of the myriad places.

Beignets - although not much fun for the calorie conscious......but not as bad as you think either.....

Dinner - fairgrounds leftovers
Taqueria Corona uptown on Magazine, Mona's (middle eastern, delish and inexpensive), Juan's Flying Burrito, Parkway Bakery & Tavern (right on Bayou St. John) - not open too late, Cooter Brown's,

Article in Nola.com - read the comments section below Brent Anderson's request for info:
http://blog.nola.com/brettanderson/2009/03/tell_us_about_your_favorite_ch.html

He's going to have a whole section in the spring dining guide - which we will link in the where to eat part of the threadheads.org site. (when it is published - usually early-mid April)

Many of the suggestions in the "casual" thread are also inexpensive.

This is wonderful news! I'm so happy for you, although I may not get to see you (looking like first weekend and daze between for me, if I'm lucky). Just remember, it's not necessary to succumb to the temptation of eating out all the time. Not the healthiest, but grabbing a Hubig's pie or a beignet can keep you going for a long time. If you want to grab a relative inexpensive breakfast out, try Mena's on Chartres. For what seems like an expensive dinner at not too high a price, I like the Gumbo Shop. Lots of free and cheap things to see and do like riding the ferry across the river (free without a car) and taking a long streetcar ride. With all the free in-stores, there's plenty of music to be had. Don't forget the most important - hanging out with your threadhead friends.

I wish....one of the years I will do all the daze between but still cant leave the kids that long. This Mama looks forward to being not so necessary and dreads it at the same time.

But being able to come at all is such a blessing. The kids are even giving up the week at the beach this summer for us to go and have fun together...they are so supportive. We will only be there 2nd weekend Thursday to early AM on Monday. Pulling an all nighter on Sunday.....

The hugs, the time in New Orleans will be all the sweeter this year...it was so close to not happening. But while happy for us, I feel so bad for others staying home.

I have to think that with kids who will give up a week at the beach this summer so y'all can be at Fest - there isn't likely to be a time when you won't be 'so necessary'. You may not be proximate in terms of geography - but you obviously did well raising your children !

Can't wait to see you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breakfast and dinner suggestions please. Thank you very very much.

The place you are staying ALWAYS has pastries, croissants, muffins, cinnamon/pecan pound cake and other snacks, as well as coffee, juice & vitamin waters for breakfast. Word on the street is they also have a big pot of "something" (spaghetti & meatballs, red beans, crawfish monica) in the fridge in case of quick dinners or late night noshes. :)

Is the chicken at New Orleans Popeyes different from here in Winchester VA? I keep getting the feeling that since it is there and not here and the original it just might be..or is it just cause its there?

thanks for your tips Stlbarb. I hope to see my twin soon.

not everyone is lucky enough to have Popeyes in their town. we do, and its my favorite. but it does somehow taste better in NOLA. and they give you spicy unless you ask for mild. here they give you mild unless you ask for spicy.
we just find it to be a real yummy & quick. and since its vacation, we dont even feel guilty about eating fried foods. and the price really helps balance the fest budget.
