View Full Version : Why Threadheads Rock!

I haven't shared this on the bored. I was served a WARN notice two weeks ago. My company has been forced to restructure. As part of their liquidation strategy, they are closing both their NYC office and their Orange.CT distribution center. My job loss didn't come as any great surprise because the department store business as well as jewelry business has changed greatly over the past ten years. I was stunned to find that many of my "family" including our IT department as well as merchants in our successful specialty division were losing their jobs!

With that said, I want to thank several Threadheads who have been there for me. In alphabetical order ...Jonny Gospel, Nancy Zipcode, NJ / NO, Scoop, Tangie and Tom (if you are lurking; I know you like to watch) THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this a little less stressful. LOVE YOU!!!! You guys are the best!

Thanx CB and Amy.

I should be fine. I've had one interview already with Bloomies. I lacked the luxury experience that they were looking for. Frankly, it wasn't a good fit anyway! I got a call earlier today that is promising. Much better fit for me and a line of mdse that I can be passionate.

I've also pondered relocation. Winters in the midwest scare me after being out here for so many years.

out there? i thought you were on the northern east coast now (which gets way more snow that we do). and the weather here changes so often, its hard to hate.

housing is still pretty reasonable in STL. how broad is your job search - ie, anything retail? anything related to jewlery? special skills?

I'm afraid I would be dead in six months! Not from dinking but from eatin!

Seriously, I'd love to relocate to New Orleans (god knows I've lived in enough cities over the years!) but I have told myself the only move I will make is back to Chicago if my parents ask me to return or need my assistance.

Thank you everyone. I feel like I turned this into me. I really want this to be about the Threadheads kind words and actions.

I'm currently focusing on merchandise planning. I have +10 years experience. I could buy but I'm more comfortable with forecasting and planning/controlling inventories than negotiating and selecting product.
There's alot of jobs in NYC and Cinny at the current time. I also saw something that interested me in Milwaukee.

Macys acquisition of May Company was the beginning of our demise. I assume their closing was a big blow to St Louis much like Marshall Fields was in Chicago.

I'm fine here housing wise because I share a house & I'm not on the deed. The landlord said he'll help me anyway he can except for my Cub tickets and "that New Orleans" shit. Hey, some people get it, my boyfriend doesn't!

You are one of the nicest people I have met on this board Linda. You are a giver and you will find something that is perfect for you and your present life.

I was very concerned you weren't making JF this year but once that was out of the way, I took a deep breath and said WOO HOO.

Yea, your career chances are best in NY and surrounding right now. Plus, I could NOT have you down here as I am trying so hard to be good (not going out during the week) and Lord knows we would both lose our jobs and fly the highest skies together down here.

Best of luck and love to ya Sis.

So sorry to hear that Linda... hope a pay cheque starts coming in again soon.

Threadheads certainly do rock! At least once every single day I receive a smile, advice, information or just a plain ol' warm and fuzzy from a Threadhead. Makes my day. Cheers.

Linda!! Sorry to here about the unemployment thing.:( I'm sure something is going to come up sooner than than later. But in the meantime come and hang with us! In a few weeks (you know who) is gonna be in town!
And we all know there will be some serious partying going on (I guess lol!) ;)

Thank you Oz. You are one of the most generous, funny, giving Theads on the bored.

I'll have a paycheck for another 75 dazes or so. I will have to go out to our distribution center a couple of daze a week to earn it. So if I'm not on the bored; don't worry that I'm in the dumps about my situation. I expect there will be good daze and some bad daze. Nothing different from any other day.

Isn't it great. It's amazing how a few words, or a smile can change one's day.
I have to remember that when I freaking out on a crowded sidewalk.

Milwaukee is much colder & snowier than down here. but i have heard its a wonderful place to live. and those 6 weeks of summer are awesome.

most of our Famous Barr store (May co) became Macy's, but they closed up the IT shop here. IT jobs are hard to come by here.

i just sold one of my Cubs/Cardinals games here (4 bleacher seats) at a huge profit. by skipping that game, it pays for our tickets to 5 other games. Cub fans are insane and obviously dont know we're in an ecomonic down turn. :p

maybe you should invent your own job. something in re-sale rather than retail. purchasing jewelry from people who need to sell and finding new buyers? that would involve forecasting and planning, as well as product selection. a specialized ebay/craigslist type thing for jewelry, both fine and high end costume. you could do that from anywhere.

Hey Linda, it sounds like you are already on your way to a new and exciting gig. With your positive attitude and smarts, I've no doubt you will land something great. Or, you can always come back "home" and be a professional bleacher bum. I know you are well qualified! Hope I get to see you at fest. When will you be in town?

Hey, Sweetpea -

I'm so sorry to hear you're joining our ranks of the under/un-employed. :(

However, I am glad that it sounds like you'll be able to rebound fairly quickly - which, as much I'd love you to move down here (and I would), there just aren't that many jobs here right now, even in retail (to which I've considered returning with 20 years of retail work scars under my belt).

But you are totally correct in that Threadheads DO indeed rock and are such caring support - they certainly have been for me during ebbs in my life . . . in fact, you're a beautiful representation of exactly that giving nature of the Threadhead Nation - you made a lovely, generous pledge to WWOZ during my shift on Monday. And this, in the middle of the challenging times you're expericing - YOU rock, Ms. Linda!!!

And don't you forget it! :)

I decided not to have my taxes taken out this year & deal with it next January.

Last year I had taxes taken every other check.

Sorry to hear that Linda!
If you end up moving here to work for Macy's, I'll be happy to help you figure out the right neighborhood and get settled etc.
Weather here is very changeable, more warm than cold. I've lived in Milwaukee too- it's very wonderful for the 3 warm months, but the cold months are very cold and very long.

I believe it, Barb! I sit at the top of the right center field bleachers in front of the concession stand. Every game, I have some person telling me about how they spent $$$ to watch the Cubs. Then they proceed to spend another $$$ on warm beer, mai tais and the worse food major league baseball offers (NY is pretty bad also). The same person will also ask me every inning what the damn score is! The scoreboard is right behind them. I'm planning to make lagniappes for opening day...pins that read "shut up and watch the damn game."

I sometimes wish I had a little more control over my ticket. I've never profited but I haven't lost more than $20 over the course of the season. I leave them in Chicago and two of my friends sell them for me since it's hard to sell a single on StubHub.

Thank you. Great idea but I don't think I'm brave enough. I guess I like structure. Of course, eventually I may be forced to with retail dying!

See ya at the Parkway!

It is really sad to hear of so many people losing their jobs, friends, family, and Threadheads. My son just lost his job also, luckily it was only a job and not a career. I told him this can be a good opportunity for change or to find out what you want to do for a living. I told him to think outside the box and take this time to choose a career. Whether that means going back to school or choosing a new path. You're never too young or too old to make a change and make a difference.
MGOHO and all the unemployed TH's good luck in finding your futures.

Sorry to hear about your bad news. We call losing a job; car troubles or relocating one of the big Trifecta...cuz any of those by themselves are such a DRAG....2 or 3 at once....yikes!!
From crisis comes opportunity for the smarties that keep their eyes, ears and mind open to consider what can happen next. Keep up your connection to those that support you, it helps keep you sane. And with such charming, clever and witty Threadheads..girl...you are lucky and we lucky to have you!
Threadheads have supported me through so much crap, I will save you from the details....but it's been that wonderful support and love that keeps me from entirely isolating myself and keeps the trademark "Joey smile" going!
