View Full Version : Music suggestions

Need some help from the all-things-music gurus on here please.
I'm in the middle of writing a syllabus for a one week class on surface design and how music influences the art produced. I need specific songs from specific categories to include and I've been at it so long my brain is mush.
So, here is my request: if you have any suggestions in the following categories, I'd be most appreciative.

Songs that make you lose motivation to move around and do anything.
Some classical music and dirges fall into this category, as do Gregorian chants.

Songs that you can't physically sit still while listening to.
Some songs just beg the entire room to bob their head, tap their foot, rock their shoulders, whatever. A local bar here has "Build Me Up, Buttercup" on it and even the drunks bounce around when that one comes on.

Songs that everyone sings along to, no matter their age or usual musical preferences.
"Happy Birthday" and "Star Spangled Banner" are the most obvious.

Songs with an obvious change of pace to the music during the song.
Tina Turner doing "Proud Mary". Maybe "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature". Seems like there's a Pink Floyd song too, but that brain mush thing is getting me stuck.

Songs that are discordant or distracting, especially played at 11.
For me, gangsta rap and very heavy metal do that, but this category is pretty subjective so I need help with it.

I'm shooting for a good mix of genres so don't hesitate to throw in old showtunes, Country, ethnic, whatever comes to mind. I'll ultimately (ideally) wind up with about 5-10 hours total of music.

This is an easy question. I have several songs but will start with one & give others a chance.

Songs that you can't physically sit still while listening to.
Some songs just beg the entire room to bob their head, tap their foot, rock their shoulders, whatever. A local bar here has "Build Me Up, Buttercup" on it and even the drunks bounce around when that one comes on.

Gospel:
Mike Farris, Salvation In Lights
I'm unable to stop moving my feet.

Gospel:
Lyle Lovett, Church

a couple more to add to the 'everyone sings along'

take me out to the ball game
Shout ! (Isley brothers version)

I'll think about the other categories.

Change of tempo:
bohemian rhapsody by Queen
Maggie Mae by Rod Stewart (although this is only after the intro - so maybe not what you are looking for)
For Your Love by the Yardbirds
Neil Young - Southern Man
Neville Brothers older stuff is great for timing changes.....

listlessness inspiring, which my pea-brain somehow connected with sad or downer music:
- Trista Pena, Gipsy Kings
- How Soon is Now, Smiths

Can't sit still tunes, all of which subscribe to what my bar-band buddies & I used to refer to as the "magic beats". The tunes - no matter how insipid - that compel even the clumsiest Clamper in the corner to do the caveman dance (with apologies to any graceful alumni of E Clampus Vitus here):
- Honky-Tonk Women, Stones
- Keep Your Hands to Yourself, Georgia Satellites
- Old Time Rock'n'Roll, Bob Seger

Sing-alongs? Mostly anecdotal bar-stool jukebox experience, but hard to go wrong with these:
- Take This Job and Shove It!, Johnny Paycheck
- Don't You Just Know It, Huey Piano Smith & the Clowns
- The Rodeo Song, David Allen Coe (parental advisory!)

There is one song--and perhaps only one song--that satifies every category on your list:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxGGckAc1rs

I suggest that you have your class listen to it for 5-10 hours straight and see what kind of art results. That would be quite the experiment (assuming, of course, anyone lives through it).

Also, pretty much anything Disco. I like To Be Real by Cheryl Lynn, We are Family by the Pointer Sisters. Hey! How about Funky Town by Lipps, Inc.??? That one makes you move FO SHO!! :p

Song change tempo: Fool in the Rain by Led Zeppelin.

I don't know about making you go to sleep but Jewel's Pieces of You cd was good come down music. :D

These are all really good. My poor brain had given up after several hours of running through my own memory and sampling songs to make sure they were what I remembered. Most of these mentioned I know but a few I'll have to look up.

Songs that make you move:

Songs that everyone sings along to:

Georgia On My Mind - Ray Charles

Carnival Time - Al Johnson
Roxanne - The Police
Oops, I did it...nah just f@%&ing with ya;)

Songs with an obvious change of pace:

Songs that are discordant or distracting: I am not sure what you are looking for here, because I find some discordant music annoying and some enjoyable. Speed metal, like "Turn On the News" by Husker Du, would be distracting IMO but not discordant and I could even call some of Kidd Jordan's music discordant but not distracting. Nine Inch Nails also has music that is discordant. Eminem's music is not discordant, but certainly distracting although you should be mindful of who is hearing this if you play something like "Drips".

Hey Delta, everyone has done such a great job here, I'm not sure I could add anything more. Not sure if you've read "This is Your Brain on Music:The Science of a Human Obsession " by Daniel Levitan -- amazing stuff that explains why much of what's suggested above does what it does to us. Highly recommend it.

Has anyone heard of the "sensitive female chord progression"? I swear, since I first read about this, I hear it EVERYWHERE. Also think I hear it, but then check to see whether the song is listed as using the SFCP and find out it's not.

From Wikipedia:

The Sensitive Female Chord Progression, named by Boston Globe Columnist [Marc Hirsh][1], is A minor, F, C, G. It can also be generically described as IV, IV, I, V. Or, the minor 6th, major fourth, major first, major fifth in the key of C.

Mr. Hirsh first noticed the chord progression in the song " One of Us" by Joan Osborne.[2] He then began to notice the chord progression in many other songs. He named the progression because it was used by many members of the Lilith_Fair in the late 1990s.[3]

Marc Hirsh maintains a list of songs with the chord progression at the Sensitive Female Chord Progression Blog at http://sixfouronefive.blogspot.com/
