Thanks for the update. I just googled midnight preserves and checked the Preservation Hall web page about an hour ago and there was no info so thanks again for reading my mind.

Can someone please describe the vibe at these? I'm trying to picture me and my krewe sitting casually in a chair post-midnight for a show during Jazzfest and I just can't imagine it.

The main room gets packed. A few folks who got in line early will sit on the benches, and behind them, it's SRO elbow to elbow to the back wall.

They open the courtyard too, and sell beer there. You can't see from there, but they set up a speaker so you can hear. That also means increased capacity, so they can sell more tickets, but no one hangs there, everyone wants in the main room, so it does get pretty packed. But the room is small enough, even when uncomfortably crowded, you're never more than 10 yards from the musicians.

I take it these usually sell out? If so, does anyone have any information on how long beforehand they do?

I went to one of these shows last year, and they had removed all of the benches - no where to sit at all, except out in the hallway.

It was still a killer show though.

Can you hear it from the street? I used to love hangin' outside with a big ass beer and then staggering home to my place of St.Peter.

Story of my (later years) life, it seems! I'm now into my "alternating 4 pairs of shoes" strategy for standing up for 20 hours every day, but still well worth the pain for these shows! And is it any better at Tip's? Anyone know offhand if Aleve & alcohol are counter-indicated?

Seeing those pix of happy people sittin' on the floor brought back a vivid memory of my cemetary & voodoo museum tour where the priestess at the museum had everyone sit down for her talk - only to leave a nice "footprint" on the floor because of the heat & humidity... guess the big print will be mine at PH! ;)

Yes, we went to four of them...The Dirty Dozen Brass Band was one of the best of the numerous times I've seen them...I was glad to find my new old pal..New Orleans Spiced Rum in the court yard too.

Aleve & alcohol are counter-indicated?

;)

Not so good for the stomach lining. But the real killer, and I really mean that, is the combination of Tylenol and Alcohol which ALMOST ALWAYS causes some liver damage. Sadly, this warning is in very fine print (and always has been) in the Tylenol package. This toxic effect is well known among toxicologists and drug designers but not so much understood in the general public that often assumes that all over the counter drugs are "safe."

"Liver damage from acetaminophen, which can be severe, can result either from an overdose or from regular doses that are taken while drinking alcohol. " (http://www.nojazzfest.com/chat/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=234673)

While there IS a debate over whether Tylenol alone causes liver damage...the matter has been settled (long ago) that Tylenol (acetaminophen) should be absolutely verboten when it comes to drinking

I love seeing shows at Preservation. Here is a shot from the Robert Walter/Johnny V/James Singleton/Donald Harrison show that was a blast. However, my all time favorite was not Midnight Preserves, but rather the FOG FEST a couple years back with JJ Grey/Papa Mali/George Supplick and someone else that just MADE my Jazz Fest.

Could be. For the show last year, I couldn't really get close enough to see where the benches would be. Did I mention these get crowded? Definitely helps to be tall, I think...

Do you think the The Del McCoury Band and Preservation Hall Jazz Band bill means the two groups will be playing together or each doing separate sets?

Some cross-pollination between those two would really be something!
