Just wondering how many out there suffer from this affliction. It starts out harmless enough like your first drink, first hit, or first bet on a sure winner, you enjoy it when the grids first start coming out. As the acts start filling out the grids, you smile, realizing there is going to be tons of fun to be had. You are on top of the world. You get to the perfect point, where there is a perfect amount of shows and clubs you want to hit, the perfect high. But you keep checking back, anxious to see what you are missing, is there something better, and then you start to go downhill, like you are now doing shots, or moving onto a stronger high. You realize you can only be in so many spots in one night, but you keep looking for more, anxiety sets in.
I have reached that point, where there I am at that perfect point, but I can't just leave well enough alone, I keep imbibing in the Grids even though I know I can't drink anymore., but I keep drinking...

you are a more hard core addict then me if you are suffering so much on in-between days!
You think you have it bad?
Next year, volunteer to actually compile the grids! See what I am still recovering from, six years later...

That is a tough competition. As a faithful Dragon Smoke attendee I've never really considered anything else that night, but there has never been as much competition before. I am going with Dragon Smoke again this year, and the change of venue to One Eyed Jack's is what tipped the scales for me. I really like that room, and the tiered concert floor/bar area gives good viewing angles from a few different locations.
I saw Dr. Lonnie Smith at Blue Nile last year and he was great--but Stanton was on drums then too, which is always an added bonus for me. That d.b.a. lineup is probably the one that gives me the most competition for Dragon Smoke; but again the room, and Stanton, win out. d.b.a is great, but not great sight lines unless you are right in front of the band.
As for Twangorama, Carrollton Station is supposed to be a great room, and they also have a good beer selection. Somehow the stars have yet to align for me to catch a show there, but I really want to.

And we love U for it!
Looking for info on HOB 5/1: says Dr. John starts @ 7, Jon Cleary @ 8...does that mean only 1 hour of the Dr. (?following a Grammy nod?)...anybody know?
Also: anybody got the impossible secret of getting out of the fairgrounds quickly?
NYMAMA: I just bought a tix for that show-was the talk of the town last year & one of my faves. DVD of that show just came out: "Live in New Orleans", if you wanna see what you're in for

ME!!! This is the one that I will probably commit to. My JF Virgin husband will be with me this year, (at least at this writing that is the plan), and this is a show that I thought would be great to bring him to. I was so moved the first time I saw the Blind Boys and I would like to share that. Would you think this is a show I would want to be sure to get tickets in advance for?

there was many people milling around in the rain outside Tip's last year begging for tix, CD just won a Grammy, it'll surely sell out.

looks that way.
years ago we paid good money for Dr. John & Marcial Ball at Tip's Uptown. they each played one hour, and did not perform together. we were disappointed. then the bar cleared the room by using the metal parade fencing - they had it across the back of the room and just kept moving it towards the stage pushing us out the side door. it was quite rude. i havent felt the same about Tip's since.
to get out of the fairgrounds early, leave early. i dont know how early the cab line starts forming. but assuming (doubtful) you can get one instantly i would think you would want to start walking out of the fest no later than 6:30 to make sure you make a 7 pm show.

Yikes metal fencing? cattle prod, ok but metal fencing is where I draw the line!:D
I am sure that would not be a nice way to end the evening. I think I will grab tickets but I will make sure I am not the last to leave the party,(always good advice). Thanks Barb

If you're ending the day at Acura, look for this sign to the right of the rightmost tent (Jazz Tent, unless they shuffle them again). It's a pedestrian exit not on the maps, since it's not an entrance. But it will shave a good 5-10 minutes off your walk to the taxi or city bus stand, compared to using the Fortin/Sauvage St exit.

I would really like to catch these guys, such a great mix of talent. Problem is I am only in town second weekend Thursday through Monday, I doubt they will add a gig over that time since they are all so busy with their "full-time jobs". Not sure if this has been posted, but there was a great review of them on Jambase-

Me too. On my third listen now. Great recording and great show.
As noted in the comments to that Jambase article, the author is wrong about the band starting at One Eyed Jacks. I don't think they've ever played there previously and that their upcoming show during this year's Fest will be their first at that venue. They started at Dragon's Den (with Jon Cleary on keys instead of Ivan), and I believe it was shortly after Dragon's Den reopened following a fire, and that was the reason for the name of the band. That was great show, but a very different sound than they have with Ivan. Before this upcoming show at OEJ, I believe the only New Orleans venues they've played--other than short sets as part of IAC at Tips--are Dragon's Den and Blue Nile.
